Members and guests, including Mayor Peter Taylor, Councillor Rabi Martins and Sarah Priestley (Watford Museum) enjoyed a wonderful three course meal to celebrate DRUM’s 25th Anniversary on 15th October. Huge thanks to Team DRUM who, once again, prepared and cooked a wonderful lunch for all our guests.

CATCH UP

Our 25th Anniversary tea party, on 12th October, raised £350 for DRUM. Huge thanks to Team DRUM for all their hard work. Despite a late evening at the Audentior Awards…..and a few sore heads, the team were in bright and early setting up and preparing the food for the afternoon event.

After a morning of face painting and pumpkin carving, our members then enjoyed a lovely lunch of ‘eyeballs’ and spaghetti on Halloween! Who said that Halloween was just for kids!

Since September 2019, DRUM has been open on a Wednesday morning from 9am-12.30pm. In addition to the morning art and craft session, there is a Tai Chi class with Francis at 10.30am.

New for Wednesdays On the last Wednesday of each month we are now offering complimentary therapy with Androulla (for a donation to DRUM).

On Wednesday 29th April, 26th August and 25th November we have a flower arranging class in the morning. You can book the flower arranging sessions on page 22.

Our Stroke Support and Yoga Group is on a Wednesday afternoon from 12.30pm-3pm.

It’s not every day that you get to fly through the air like a super hero, especially with disabilities and especially if you are in a wheelchair….. we did!

It’s not every day that you casually bump in to actors Tom Hardy and Andy Serkis, or Batman either…...we did!

Huge thanks to the Flying Hero Club, the Watford Chamber of Commerce, Warner Bros Studios and Mealing Taxis for making this happen.

Huge thanks to everyone that supported our Christmas Fair at the end of November. The hand made Christmas crafts were absolutely fantastic this year, so well done to everyone for their hard work. We raised just over £3,000 from the fair and through the sale of our Christmas cards and calendars. Huge thanks to Metro Print for their support with our calendars again this year.

DRUMBEAT is sponsored by Metro Print, Watford. Huge thanks to Andy and his team for their continued support.

Huge thanks to our DRUM volunteers who raised £397 at the Intu Christmas Wrapping Stall in December.

Huge thanks to our DRUM volunteers who raised £650 at Asda on 5th December and £488 on 23rd December.

Congratulations to Angela Harris whose

artwork was chosen by Peter Taylor, Mayor

of Watford, as his official Christmas card.

The Mayor’s card was sponsored by many

local businesses and raised over £7,000 for

local charities, split between DRUM and the

Watford Women’s Centre.

The DRUM Elves pulled out all the stops for our Christmas party on 20th December, providing a wonderful three course meal for nearly 100 DRUM members, carers and guests.

The event, held at DRUM, was made even more magical this year with a surprise from Bev, our Asda Community Champion and the Asda Foundation. Bev helped us apply for a donation from the Asda Foundation to help pay towards some of the costs but then secured extra funding to add a little extra Christmas sparkle by organising a surprise magician and singer to entertain everyone.

Huge thanks to TEAM DRUM and to everyone for their support. We raised just over £1,000 for DRUM.

NEWS

Reflexology Day at DRUM, with Jo Vincent Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet, hands and ears. It’s based on a theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems.

Jo will be in DRUM on Tuesday 18th February offering free sessions to all members and carers.

Our love and deepest sympathy goes out to DRUM member John Castle and his family, who’s beloved wife Anne passed away on 18th January following a short illness over Christmas. Anne’s funeral will be at West Herts Crematorium on Monday 10th February at 12pm. John has requested family flowers only and donations to DRUM.

DRUM will be CLOSED on Monday 10th February, as some staff have training and others will be attending Anne’s funeral.

On Sunday 26th April, Dominic Chester is running the LONDON MARATHON to raise money for DRUM! Sponsorship forms are available from DRUM. Please help Dom raise as much money as possible for DRUM! Thank you for your support.

When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe.

Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved ones and to hope for the future. The 75th anniversary will provide our nation and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of those who saw us through this dark and terrifying period.

To commemorate this important time we are having a VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebration Party at DRUM, on Thursday 7th May, 11.30am - 3.30pm. Please join us for an afternoon of food and dance.

Tell all your friends & family! £10 per person, book on page 21.
