The President’s Message by Steve McConnell

I hope your year is off to a great start. There is a lot going on within our industry and the Arkansas ASHRAE Chapter.

Due to the ASHRAE Winter Conference and AHR Expo in Orlando (February 1 – 5, 2020), our chapter meeting will be held on the second Wednesday this month, February 12th. Jim Bradford, a 40-year industry veteran from NW Arkansas will be our speaker. He will be presenting several relevant design and product application challenges within our industry. See the speaker spotlight within the newsletter for more details. Please RSVP for lunch. We look forward to seeing you there.

February is a big month for our chapter in serving students. Over the years, our Chapter has had to privilege to support our student chapters and their respective advisors in various ways to help them attend the Winter Conference and AHR Expo. We were able to do that again this year as well with Arkansas Tech and Arkansas State University. Thanks to Fallon Lee and Daniel Nehus, our Student Activities Chair and Co-chair, respectively, for coordinating that effort. Josh Faulkner, our Government Affairs Chair, has worked with Governor Asa Hutchinson’s office to obtain a proclamation for E-week, February 16-21st. We have a special opportunity to promote and introduce engineering to students in our community that week. You can do that a number of different ways. If you have children in a K-12 school, you can arrange to speak to one of their classes. I have done this several times personally over the years and have enjoyed presenting an overview of the type of engineering we have the privilege of doing in this industry, answer their questions, and sometimes conduct an engineering related educational activity. It is extremely rewarding and gives the next generation a glimpse into our industry. You also can reach out to Fallon or Daniel and they can help you get signed up to speak at a local school during E-week or another time that works with your schedule.

Region VIII’s Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) is coming up (April 23-25) in Houston and registration is now open. See the newsletter or our website www.arkansasashrae.org for more information. I encourage any of our members to attend but especially if you are already serving or have any interest in serving our chapter or region. Drew Grant, President-Elect, is in the process of putting together his team of volunteers for 2020-2021. Please reach out to Drew or myself if you have any interest in utilizing your time, talents, and experience to serve within ASHRAE in any capacity. You can look at the current chapter leadership roster in the back of the newsletter for a list of chapter positions and committees. It takes a great team of volunteers to serve our chapter and region each year. Come be a part of the team! One critical part of establishing next year’s leadership team is to nominate Chapter officers and BOG. At our February meeting, I will present a nominating committee to be voted on and approved by the membership so they may begin to work. We will vote on the new officers and BOG at the March meeting.

The Arkansas Energy Office is in the process updating the Arkansas Energy Code. As an industry and as a chapter, we have the opportunity to be involved with this process over the course of 2020. Speaker Spotlight: Jim Bradford, a 40-year veteran of the Arkansas marketplace will provide some meaningful discussion on the entities consulting engineers must serve and please and then finish the program by discussing two chronically troublesome technical design issues: humidity control in sensitive areas of small outpatient surgery buildings and controlling unwanted noise from large packaged air conditioners.

Presentation Description: Consulting engineers are pushed to the limit every day to design projects in record time, provide for requirements the building owners do not properly describe, meet unrealistic budgets, deal with inexperienced installers, see to it building operators have systems they can understand, and somehow cover their costs and liabilities.

YEA & Student Activities

Student Activities Science Fair Judging:

Recently the student activities committee had the opportunity to help out the Little Rock School District with a few science fairs. We were responsible for judging about 35 different projects for the students of Stephens Elem and Bale Elem ranging in the level of complexity. The schools are very interested to bring us back soon to talk about our jobs and about STEM careers so look out for upcoming opportunities. We have also been in contact with the college students around AR as well. We provided financial aid for the student ASHRAE members at Arkansas State and Arkansas Tech University campuses last month to attend the winter conference. Coming up in March we plan to host a March Madness fundraiser with a lot of really cool prizes up for grabs so be on the lookout for information at the next meeting. There is always a list of opportunities to volunteer with the local schools so please feel free to reach out to Fallon Lee or Daniel Nehus if you are interested in helping out.

Arkansas ASHRAE Research Promotion By: Ron McCarty, RP Chair

Thank you all for your generous contributions and sponsorships benefiting ASHRAE Research. The current level of donations towards our goal $40,000 sits at $12,250. To meet the current goal, we have a number of upcoming fund raisers in the works. The Sportsman’s Raffle RP promotion has been changed to Gift Cards from Bass Pro Shops with the drawing at our April meeting. Tickets for the Sportsman’s Raffle can be purchased on line at https://arkansasashrae.org/catalog.php or directly from Ron McCarty (call 501-350-5728). Last week we held the second of three Texas Hold’em Poker Nights for Research Promotion that raised $250 for ASHRAE RP. This event was hosted by Powers of Arkansas. The big winners for the night were Scott Flournoy and RP. Congratulations to Scott and thank you for the those that participated and donated to ASHRAE RP. The next Texas Hold’em Poker Nights will be hosted by Harrison Energy Partners with the date to be announced.

The next event on the RP calendar is our Trap Shoot on March 6th at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation Shooting Sports Complex in Jacksonville AR. The event starts at 1:00 PM with lunch server at 12:00. This is a great event and should be a lot of fun. Our calling campaign will begin as we approach the new year to thank you for contributing in the past and asking you to help again this year. I look forward to talking with each of you about RP. Arkansas ASHRAE History

Russell Black, Arkansas ASHRAE Historian

Vernon Wade was Arkansas ASHRAE President in 1994-95. In addition to Vernon, immediate family members have also contributed enormously to Arkansas ASHRAE: brother Hank G. Wade was also a Chapter President (1979-80), and father Hank W. Wade was elected to the Arkansas ASHRAE Hall of Fame in 2015. Following, please find Vernon’s Leadership Recall Interview (March 24, 1998) I was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 19, 1954. I am the second of three, with my older brother, Hank and my younger sister, Wendy. My parents Henry and Betty Wade moved us to Little Rock in 1959. My father worked for Honeywell in Memphis and came to Little Rock to open a business representing Barber-Colman controls and air distribution systems. I grew up in Little Rock and was educated from kindergarten through U.A.L.R. graduating with a bachelors in business administration in 1977. I thought then my education had been completed. However, upon beginning work at Wade Company I realized the education had just begun. I needed engineering and application knowledge and gained some of it through various factory sponsored training schools. I also began doing test and balance work which helped me understand systems and gave me cause to interact

with the consulting engineers. Kent Pettit and Bill Goodman impressed upon me to gain further knowledge through ASHRAE and so I became an Affiliate in 1979. ASHRAE is now my primary source of education. I have accepted the fact that products and applications will always change and that an education is never complete. Furthermore, these changes are good and the best way to keep informed of them is through ASHRAE membership. I gained a comfort level with ASHRAE simply by attending meetings and social functions. The Board of Directors nominated me to go through the officer chairs starting in 1991. I had self-doubts such as maturity, knowledge, commitment, or the time to dedicate. As I went through the officer chairs I found a competent effort got the job done. I found many ASHRAE members in the chapter had a sense of commitment and that the membership supports the officers well. I don't know where the time came from but it came and went fast. I was Chapter President, 1994-95, which was the ASHRAE Centennial year. The challenge was to recognize the Centennial and to create and archive our chapter history. This was in addition to the goals and operations of the Chapter's normal business year. I was concerned, but after forming a Centennial Committee and with more than a competent effort from Historian Keith Wortsmith, we achieved all chapter goals and were awarded the Presidential Award of Excellence Citation. It now hangs in my office. Recognizing our history was good for the chapter and as it turns out was something that needed to be done. This is my first year in a long time that my attendance at the CRC is not required. My wife Betty and I could use that spring weekend of April 23 and 24 to do what we like; tennis, reading, home improvements, party barging the lake, or simply hammocking. On the other hand, we have never been to a CRC we didn't enjoy. There is a lot to be said for surrounding yourself with good people. We have already made our reservations and hope to see you in Tulsa.

Arkansas ASHRAE will be doing a trap shooting tournament in March of 2020. Teams will consist of five (5) shooters.
