Sunset Sing AlongsFree Programs Each Thursday

By Gary [email protected]

If your idea of a perfect late afternoon in Paradise is singing classic music from the 1950s through the 1970s, then enjoying a mag-nificent sunset, the free “Sunset Sing Along” by Lee County Parks & Recreation at Bowditch Point Park is for you! Mike Leising, Salli Donaldson, and Jon and Carol Van Dyke, who are all volunteers, lead the program that Mike and Salli began five years ago, with Jon and Carol in their 3rd season. Salli explained that she and Mike played music in Kentucky for roughly 20 years, and when they moved to Lee County, they looked for an opportunity, “so we approached Parks & Recreation and they thought it a great idea! We met Carol and Jon while jamming together at the ‘Pickle-&-Pub’ and invited them to join us.” “This music crosses all borders,” added Mike. “I can’t believe this is our 5th year, as time flies by!”As the audience gathered, the four entertainers played at few warm-up songs beginning at 4:45 p.m.: “Fire on the Mountain” by The Marshall Tucker Band; “Black Magic Woman” from Santana; and Jim-my Buffet’s “5 O’clock Somewhere” because, as Jon observed, “it’s almost 5 o’clock!” “Now that it is 5 o’clock,” Mike related, “I promise all songs from here on are in your songbook, to expand everyone’s musical hori-zons!” The first was “Love Potion #9” by The Searchers. Even though the audience had songbooks with all the words, the selections are so beloved, few people needed them to join in. Next comes “Under the Boardwalk” by The Drifters, then “I Should Have Known Better” by The Beatles; John Denver’s “Take Me Home, County Road”; and “Margaritaville” from Buffett again. Mike en-couraged everyone to sing a little louder, saying “you’ve heard us and know we are not that good, so your confidence should be really high!”

In addition to singing, several people joined in with tambourines and one even brought their own acoustic guitar. They performed “Get Ready” by The Temptations; The Beat-les once more with “She Loves You”; “All I Have to Do is Dream” by the Everly Brothers; Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bye Bye Love”; “Hit The Road, Jack” by Ray Charles; and “Sweet Caroline” from Neil Diamond, “our most requested song!” They follow with “My Girl” by The Temptations, then a cross-generation song famous by both Bob Dylan and Darius Rucker: “Wagon Wheel!” Upon finishing, Mike said, “I hope you en-joyed yourself; now go see that terrific sunset!” Mother Nature did not disappoint, as it set majestically straight into the Gulf, ending another perfect day in Paradise! “Sunset Sing Alongs” are at Bowditch Point Park, at the very northern tip of Fort Myers Beach, each Thursday through March 7 from 4:45 p.m. to roughly 5 minutes prior to sunset. While it is free, parking is $1-per-30 minutes; plan on at least 90 minutes. There are several chairs, with picnic tables along the periphery, but you can bring your own, and dress for appropriate weather.

Gretchen Kish Serrano has doggone good artistic ideas! As such, she is making a return appearance to the Fort Myers Beach Pub-lic Library as its “Artist of The Month” for February, following her first show in the 3rd Floor Exhibit area from June/July 2017. Through her dynamic imagination, experience for yourself an original Vincent Van Growl, Pablo Pawcasso, or any of her vast array of paintings inspired by man’s best friend! Gretchen’s inspiration, however, comes from The Great Masters to create the classic “Paw Palettes,” a one-of-a-kind expression of love for your pet. “‘Paw Palettes’ is an art collection for all pet lovers,” ex-plained Gretchen, “while my commission work is for specific projects

for loving pet owners, because to a lot of people, their pet is truly a work of art! I personalize the painting by spending a lot of time with the owners and their pet, so I can capture the style and look that displays the love that exists between them.” Your dog does not actually pose for Gretchen: “People ask me that all the time! If I tried that, we would have paint all over me and the pet and everything! Clients send me as many photographs of their pet as possible, from as many different angles as possible, then I observe the owner and pet together to see their personalities and relationship. I provide sketches to them, to ensure I am capturing it all correctly, and once they approve, it takes me several more weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the piece, so the entire com-mission can take 3 to 6 months to reach your home. As for me, the best part is when I am in that happy joyful flow, and time just disappears, when I find the theme while painting a dog, and hopefully others see that.” People always ask Gretchen when she will paint people, particularly children, “but I avidly do pets. My drip paintings are big because the love you have for your pet is equally as big! My works make people smile all the time, so it is a positive for everyone else as well as so much fun for me. When I do work, I have other portraits on the walls, so all these big happy eyes watch me create. What I do is really a challenge, because there are a wide variety of Great Masters, and an even wider variety of dog breeds, so it is interesting to fit the style to the animal, to make each one a brand new experience!” To learn more about Gretchen Kish Serrano and “Paw Pal-ettes,” see www.pawpalettes.com. For the Fort Myers Beach Public Library, see www.fmb.lib.fl.us or call 239-765-8162. The Library is at 2755 Estero Boulevard; hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Sunday & holi-days including Monday, February 18, for the Presidents’ Day Holiday.

The Estero Island Historic Society (EIHS) continues its exciting 2019 Speaker Series at the Fort Myers Beach Public Library at 2755 Estero Boulevard, in the 3rd floor Community Room, on the second Monday of each month through April at 7 p.m. February 11 features Craig Pittman with “‘Oh, Florida!’ To Some People It is Paradise; To Others, It’s a Punchline!” Since 1998, Craig has covered environmental issues for the “Tampa Bay Times” and is co-author of “Paving Paradise: Florida’s Vanishing Wetlands.” During his presentation, he will recount some of the wilder stories from Florida’s history and culture, as well as relating how Florida influenced life throughout the United States. Monday, March 11 is Dr. Tom Berson and “The History & Significance of Florida’s Springs.” Dr. Berson instructed Florida and Environmental History at Stetson University and currently teaches American History at Santa Fe College. His program will demonstrate

that Florida’s springs are not only unique in their size and number, but are also emblematic of a forgotten Florida that was once a mysterious frontier that stirred the national imagination. The EIHS Speaker Series concludes on Monday, April 8, with Elliot Kleinberg offering “Florida in The Civil War? Believe It!” Kleinberg has spent nearly four decades as a reporter, including over a quarter-century at the “Palm Beach Post” in West Palm Beach. He will detail how Florida was the third state to secede from the Union, and played a much more strategic role than most history books let on. Learn about Florida’s role in the blockade, its critical battles, the trag-edy of its governor, the veterans who founded many of Florida’s cities, and how some people are still fighting The Civil War! The EIHS Speaker Series is free, though it does appreci-ate donations, with reservations unnecessary. The Florida Humanities Council sponsors the programs with funds from the Florida Depart-ment of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts. For additional information, contact the Estero Island Historic So-ciety at 239-463-0435 or the Fort Myers Beach Public Library at www.fmb.lib.fl.us or call 239-765-8162. In addition to its Speaker Series, the EIHS invites Fort Myers Beach residents and visitors to its free Museum & Nature Center in the Davison Historic Cottage on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to Noon. The non-profit EIHS began in 1990 when island residents rec-ognized how rapidly Fort Myers Beach was losing its historic cottages, landmarks, wildlife and habitat. Its mission is “Archival, Educational and Historical.” In 1995, the EIHS received, via a donation, The Davison Cottage that was originally built on the beach in 1921, but successful preservation efforts led to its relocation to its current site at 161 Bay Road, just down the street from the Fort Myers Beach Public Library and adjacent to Matanzas Pass Preserve, the last maritime tropical hammock on Estero Island. In 2004, the EIHS received a second do-nated cottage and rain barrel, and hopes to add the historic “Red Shut-ter Cottage” to its campus during 2019!

Bowditch Point Nature WalksMultiple Free Programs AvailableBy Gary [email protected]

The weather was cool and overcast as 12 hardy souls at-tended the free Bowditch Point Park Interpretive Walk at the 17-acre natural gem at the northern tip of Estero Island managed by Lee Coun-ty Parks & Recreation, but when we finished 90 minutes later, skies were clear and the temperature warm. Barry Fulmer, a 4-year volun-teer, led our program that began at the pavilion. He showed us a gumbo limbo tree, with red and peeling bark, saying its nickname is the “tourist tree because so many visitors get red and peeling skin from too much sun!” We looked for gopher tor-toises that are native to the Southeastern United States and prevalent at Bowditch Point. “They are a ‘keystone species,’” said Barry, “that digs burrows that provide shelter for at least 360 other animals.” The group encountered the Sabal Palm, Florida’s state tree. Barry adds that people often refer to it as “boots” because of its un-usual protruding bark that rolls up and out from the trunk. “Cowboys who worked this land would hang their wet boots from these to dry or would break them off for shoehorns.” He led us to the Matanzas Pass estuary, saying that “estuaries are where fresh and salt water meet – that is why we have mangroves here. Red mangroves grow closest to water, black mangroves in drier areas, with whites in the driest loca-tions. They stabilize the shoreline and are critical to our environment, especially during hurricanes. That is the marvelous thing about a bar-rier island – it is dynamic and alive.” Suddenly everyone “Oooh’s & Ahhh’s” at a bottlenose dol-phin dancing in Gulf! “This is a great spot to see dolphins,” said Barry, “along with manatees and sea turtles.” We walked roughly one mile over 90 minutes, with frequent stops to examine what we found. Bowditch Point Park at 50 Estero Boulevard, with free na-ture walks every other Tuesday through March 26 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with walks February 12 & 26; and every Friday through April 26 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; parking $2-per-hour. Lee County Parks & Recreation also offers the San Carlos Bay – Bunche Beach Preserve Nature Walk on Wednesdays through April 24 at 18201 John Morris Road, across from Fort Myers Beach, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; free with parking $2-per-hour, along with the Matanzas Pass Preserve Nature Walk at 199 Bay Road with “Life in the Mangroves” on Thursdays through March 27 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. “Exploring Ethnobotany” is offered every Wednes-day at 9:30am in the Matanzas Pass Preserve. No reservations neces-sary; for information, call 239-432-2154 or see www.leeparks.org. Lovers Key State Park at 8700 Estero Boulevard hosts nature walks and programs free with park admission year-round at 10 a.m. For program schedule and reservations, call 239-463-4588 or see www.floridastateparks.org/loverskey. The free “Guided Beach Walk” at Newton Park at 4650 Estero Boulevard is Tuesdays year-round at 9 a.m. No reservations necessary; for details call 239-765-0865 or see www.moundhouse.org. Discover a different side of Fort Myers Beach on these nature walks and programs!

GENERAL COMMENTS:We’re going to have to be quick this month because, you know, there aren’t that many days to play around with in February, especially with the next leap year being NEXT year (like we couldn’t spare the day for THIS year). So, like all the political promises that we’ve learned to live without, we’ll make do with what we’ve got to work with. At least we can enjoy the omelet, even if it isn’t a soufflé. So, here’s what we’ve got to work with this month: Common Sense as conspira-cy theories perpetrated by insidious people.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)We all know the lyric, “You can’t always get what you waah-aunt … but if you try sometime, you get what you need.” This concept was passed on to Mick Jagger when he was a little kid in school, by a teacher who was also a union labor pro-pagandist. MI 6 then implanted an operative playing a groupie with the Rolling Stones, to get Mick to write a pop song on the subject and get it performed world-wide. Marketers then started selling Mao worker hats and Chinese slippers to the teenagers. The fix was in. And now, 50 years later we’re full circle on the cycle. Beware fads on hats and shoes!

PISCES (Feb 19 - March 20) “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” That might be true if the bush is a bank and you’re holding the paper. Otherwise, who really gives a crap. Well, unless you bought into the “grass is always greener on the other side” psychosis. That one usually resolves into trespassing charges. No - if you’re looking at a bird in your hand you’re probably too busy with the flapping wings and loose bowels to worry about what’s in the bushes. Just focus on the task at hand.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)“What you see is what you get.” Wow! Sounds like a stern parental unit remon-strating her out-of-control rug rats at Target. While it is used often by parents little is known of its origin. Evidently it was tracked back to a Wiccan sorcerer who used the spell on his followers to disguise the fact that he sold the beans for a bunch of tank tops for the villagers. He had to bend over backwards to make it appealing until he drew a rune on the front of one. Then everything turned out okay and everybody wore the tank tops around the village. Some even prized them as collectibles and stored them as valuables.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” This was of course spoken by Juliet, who, as Old Capulet said to Paris, ‘… hath not seen the change of four-teen years’.” In other words, she was 13 years old! Well, here comes another adage: “God ordains strength out of the mouth of babes and sucklings.” (Psalms 8:2 for those of you tracking with me). We’re not going to argue with that God, because He is holding all the cards. So, the saying holds true, and the next time somebody asks, “What’s that smell?” you can feel free to say whatever you like, because it will still smell the same.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” No brainer there - did you ever take a look at their teeth? The older the horse, the bigger the teeth! But, if you don’t look, you might miss that it really isn’t a gift. So you better look the ‘gift giver in the eye’ and determine if maybe you should look that gift horse in the mouth - bite or no bite. To defend against such uncertainties always carry a spare gift. That way, if someone offers you a gift, you can give one back immediately. This action balances out the unknowns, and (hopefully) both of you end up with presents! Win-win.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22)You may find yourself stumbling around in a bit of a fog, wondering what day of the week it is. If you weren’t smart enough to keep a calendar on the wall, marking off each day as it passes, you’re in the zone known as: “Close but no cigar.” The adage “feet don’t fail me now” works sometimes - thanks to muscle memory - getting you over to the coffee maker. Unfortunately not so much if it’s the middle of the afternoon and you just walked into a room … for some reason. At that point, rather than “opening a can of worms” you’d best “sit this one out.” Go find a beach chair somewhere, and count some clouds instead.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) It’s kinda funny that you can “cry me a river” but you can’t “cry over spilt milk.” First off, no one has the capacity to cry a river of tears. Secondly, why can’t you cry over spilt milk? Wouldn’t you, if it was all you had left and you hadn’t had your morning coffee yet? Maybe it’s all in the innuendo, non-sexual. And so, underneath it all, it is your intention to do it anyway driving the whole argument, so you might as well do it. So much less effort gets expended.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept 22)“Curiosity killed the cat.” Actually, the whole quote is ““Curiosity killed the cat, you know, but satisfaction brought him back snap-ass happy (Stephen King, the Col-orado Kid)”. See what happens when you don’t let people finish their sentences? You miss the best part - the punchline. With the first part we end up with a dead cat. What did we miss? We all know cats have nine lives (duh). Therefore ‘satis-faction’ must be an obscure reference to god and reincarnation, who brings him back all “snap-ass happy.” Just remember, you only get nine lives, if you’re a cat.

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)“Happy as a clam.” Most of us know Happy as a purple unicorn in a tv show. We only got to see him for one season, but it ended incomplete, and I think he goes undercover as a clam next season. I mean, we can’t really be talking about real clams. Has anyone ever really seen a happy clam? Shells cracked open, and eaten alive? That doesn’t sound like a happiness to me! I’m going with the psychedelic, purple, plush, unicorn toy going undercover as a clam. That’s real to me because I’ve seen it on tv. So saying, be ready for change.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)What we usually mean when we say, “Hit below the belt” … well, being a guy the concept causes me to go breathless, speechless even. But that’s a gen-der-specific statement, and in this day-and-age identifying anyone as any kind of gender leads to viral mudslinging in a heartbeat. So we’ll be redefining the phrase to reference things like ‘the bible belt’, or ‘the corn belt,’ or something more non-gender related. That way we can be right in the middle of the road, standing on the yellow line, unmoving, barely breathing. We will not be rattling any cages this month.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)What happened to my wet clothes? They got “hung out to dry.” That’s the original concept referred to in that saying. In reality? When you get hung out to dry it ain’t because your clothes are wet. Oh, the morbid images that come to mind with that phrase - images of spy movies and such. No, thank you. You know what? Even if it’s just because my clothes are wet I don’t want to be hung out to dry. Well, unless it’s in a hammock with a cool drink in my hand. That’ll work.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)You know when you feel like “making a mountain out of a molehill?” Here’s a little known fact: Florida crackers have no concept of what you mean by mountain. Think about it. They’ve seen the postcards of mountains, but have not experi-enced the sensation of altitude in their ears. And, anyway, when was the last time you actually saw a molehill? That’s why crackers are all so chill. They hear the words coming out of the snowbirds mouth, but were really thinking about something else, like fishing.

Disclaimer: As you know by now, I’m not an astronomer, astrologer or even a layman horoscopologist. These horoscopes are all a figment of our imagina-tions. True, “we suffer more often in imagination than in reality (Seneca)” But then “Reality can be beaten with enough imagination (Mark Twain).” Just keep in mind that “imagination is the reality of the dreamer (Scott Ringenbach)” and just leave the dreaming to my Imaginarium (I just upgraded my cranial movie theater to Imax.)
