Kindness Challenge
Often in the month of February, our hearts and minds turn to thoughts of love as our surroundings become all shades of red. Stores, classrooms, billboards, com-mercials, and even our clothes are decorated with hearts, X’s and O’s, and emoji’s with hearts for eyes. Remember that New Year’s resolution about eating better and avoiding sweets? Should you be one of the five people left who has managed to stick with that resolution, February then comes along to sabotage your efforts and challenge your self-discipline. Candy hearts, delicious boxes of chocolates, pink-frosted cookies, and heart-shaped pizzas are everywhere enticing you to ex-press your love to your family, a special someone, coworkers and friends.
At Southern Bluffs, we are challenging our students, families and each other to a month of showing kindness. Simple acts of kindness: writing a thank-you note, extending a compliment, helping a stranger in need, holding the door for some-one, cleaning up without being asked, donating your time or a gently-used item, smiling at a stranger, sitting next to a new person in the lunchroom, buying the coffee for the person in line behind you, or showing patience...the list is endless.
What’s great about random acts of kindness is that they are not limited by color, cost, shape, age, or time of year...AND you can overindulge while still keeping your resolutions!
With kids in mind,

Our Scholastic Book Fair is Coming in March! Dear Parents and Families: Reading for pleasure, inside and outside of school, has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading: • Set the example. Let children see you read.
• Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills. Talk about books and what your child is reading.
• Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right to our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits. Book Fair dates: March 12 – 15th Shopping hours: During Parent Conferences Before you visit the Book Fair, be sure to download the Book Fairs app to help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit: scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs. If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to visit our Online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our Online Book Fair is available from [INSERT DATE] to [INSERT DATE]. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school. Happy Reading! Influenza (Flu) We have seen a large increase in the number of people testing positive for influenza (flu) within La Crosse County. The flu shot has not been as effective as hoped, but it is still worth getting the flu shot, giving your child and you a little extra protection to avoid a trip to the emergency room or hospitalization. We have seen an increase in the number of people hospitalized with influenza (flu). BE AWARE of flu symptoms:
• Body aches • Fever • Cough • Sneezing • Runny or stuff nose • Sore throat • Extreme tiredness • Children may also have vomiting and diarrhea
Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs: Try to avoid close contact with sick people. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours
after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Nutrition Info
Yogurt is an excellent source of protein, calcium and potassium.
Yogurt also has beneficial probiotics, which are live bacteria that help keep our digestive system healthy.
Fun Facts
Many of the yogurt varieties in the United States are made from cow’s milk, but yogurt can also be made from other milks including goats, sheep or
non-dairy options like soy or coconut.
Regular yogurt is traditionally unstrained, resulting in a smoother, more liquid consistency. Greek yogurt is strained and has less liquid. As a result it is thicker and creamy. Try both to see what you like best!
Uses
Yogurt makes a great snack! Add fresh fruit, granola, or whole grain cereal on top as a crunchy topping.
Plain yogurt is a great substitution for sour cream. Top your tacos and baked potatoes with yogurt, or use yogurt as the base of a fresh veggie dip.
Family Friendly Activities
Have a smoothie making contest with your whole family! There are many different types of smoothies and you can be creative and come up with
your own recipe. The one rule is everyone’s recipe must use yogurt. Some ideas for add-ins are: frozen or fresh fruit, almond milk, kale,
pumpkin puree, spinach, peanut butter, or cocoa powder.
Farm2School Updates
This month leaders of all the Coulee Region Farm2School sites met with local company, Reinhart Food Service to continue to plan for how locally
grown foods can be added to breakfast and lunch menus! Reinhart is based in La Crosse, but their company delivers food to schools and
restaurants throughout the United States!
Pick:
•While yogurt is a healthy food, many varieties contain a lot of added sugar. Check the
nutrition label before purchasing.
•A good rule of thumb is to choose yogurt with under 23 grams of sugar per 6 ounces.
The less the better! Or choose plain yogurts and sweeten
yourself with maple syrup or honey.
Store:
•Keep yogurt in the refrigerator and consume it before the expiration date.
Prepare:
•Many yogurts come in ready-to-eat containers. Some may
need to be stirred before using.
Coulee Region Farm2School is a partnership between La Crosse County Health Department, Mayo Clinic Health System –Franciscan Healthcare, Gundersen Health System, and the School Districts of Bangor, Holmen, La Crescent-Hokah, La
Crosse, Onalaska, and West Salem.
