January Employee of the Month Toa T.
We are happy to announce the January Employee of the
Month, Toa T. Toa is a overnight shift care attendant in the
Assisted Living program. She has been working in our community
for 20 years! “I feel so happy, because I really like my job,” Toa
says. Toa’s favorite things to do away from work are to go to
church with her family and to see her 10 grandchildren. “I really
love my job, because I appreciate my boss for all her support
throughout the years. Also, I enjoy working with a wonderful
team of coworkers,” she adds. Charito Amoranto, her supervisor,
says, “Toa is an exceptional employee who really cares about the
residents and the community. It is not an easy job to work
overnight, but she does an excellent job of taking care of residents
and making sure they are well taken care of.”
February Employee of the Month Arthur C.
Congratulations to the February Employee of the Month,
Arthur C.! Arthur is a nurse in the Meadow Wing/Focused Care
programs. He has been working at Palo Alto Commons for over 3
years. Born in the Philippines, Arthur has been living in the Bay
Area for almost 20 years. He is happy that he has a large family,
including his parents, siblings, and cousins, who live in the area as
well. In his spare time, Arthur enjoys spending time with his
fiancé, exercising, and checking out new restaurants. “I really
enjoy my job, because I love being a nurse. Also, my coworkers
are wonderful!,” he says. Rowena Macaraeg, Arthur’s supervisor,
adds, “Arthur is caring, organized, and hard-working. He really
takes great care of the residents.”

February Literary Lecture
w/Darwin Patnode Carson McCullers and Her Stories of Small-Town Loneliness
Darwin Patnode conducts monthly talks on literary authors.
Darwin has a PhD in English and
is a professional parliamentarian
and academic fund raiser. On
Thursday, February 8, at 2:00pm, in
the activity room, Darwin will
conduct this month’s literary
lecture entitled, Carson McCullers and Her Stories of Small-Town
Loneliness. Synopsis: Often
compared to Tennessee Willliams,
Carson McCullers (1917-67) wrote of lonely people seeking love in
all the wrong places in small southern towns. She is an expert in
spiritual isolation, known chiefly for The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
and Reflections in a Golden Eye. We will show the film, The Heart is
a Lonely Hunter, starring Alan Arkin, in the evening.
TRIVIA DINNER NIGHTS
February 7 & 21
Special Concert: Side by Side One of our favorite musical groups, Side by Side, will be
performing at Palo Alto Commons on Saturday, February 24, at
2:00pm, in the living room. Side by Side is a community service
group, comprising of current Stanford University students, that
performs throughout the Bay Area. At each performance, the group
performs a selection of songs from the 1920s to the 1960s. Some
songs are performed with lively group choreography and others are
sung one-on-one to an individual audience member. After each
performance, the group spends 15-20 minutes talking with the
residents. Side by Side believes that music is a powerful tool in
breaking barriers and, through their musical performances and the
conversations they share with the audience afterwards, beautiful
connections and friendships are made across generations in
harmony. Don’t miss this very special concert!!
FEBRUARY LUNCH OUTING: Chef Chu’s Chinese Restaurant
In honor of Chinese New Year, join us on our February
luncheon outing to Chef Chu Chinese Restaurant! This lunch

Health Fit Program The Health Fit program is designed to maintain or to
improve a resident’s physical endurance and strength. It focuses
on achieving and maintaining optimal physical well-being through
use of walking therapy and individualized exercise & fitness plans.
Areas of focus include flexibility, mobility, strengthening, balance,
and range of motion.
Health Fit is recommended for post-physical therapy
residents, who need continued support, and for residents who
would like a personalized walking therapy or exercise program.
Our qualified and experienced Health Fit Coach, Leland N.,
conducts and monitors each individualized program, based on
resident needs and on therapist and doctor recommendations.
Leland works closely with each resident/family and health care
professional to ensure the program reflects resident’s goals.
If you are interested in Health Fit, please see Charito
Amoranto, Assistant Executive Director, for more information
about the program and the fee/schedule.
