FEBRUARY 2018
MONTH OF FEBRUARY All I can say is-WOW! The kindness from the members and staff has been overwhelming! I cannot thank you enough for all the encouraging words and comments since I came onboard. When you decide to leave a position after 13 years, you ask yourself, “Am I making the right move?” I can say without a doubt, “YES, I made the right move!” I am looking forward to all the activities, events, travel and fitness classes in 2018 with you. I also welcome your ideas and thoughts and think we are going to have a great year! As you can see the newsletter looks a little different. We have a new year, a new Activities Director and a new newsletter. It’s good to try new things! This month we celebrate Black History and Gullah Heritage month!! We have some awesome events scheduled so please check out the Highlights sections for details.

Thursday, February 8 1:30pmJonathan Riddle-History of Black Church Music (CH)
Music touches the soul in ways the spoken word cannot. It’s a language
that’s both Universal & Eternal. This class is a survey of how slavery impacted music in America and how
African American Spirituals were born from some of the darkest times
in our nation’s history. Come and experience the story of how God cut loose their tongues and freed
their spirits to soar beyond the limits imposed by society.
Wednesday February 21 11amGullah Historian-Louise Cohen (CH)Louise will share her
family story, recite the 23rd Psalm in Gullah, sing
Gullah gospel with natural music, show and tell Gullah artifacts.
Monday, February 26 2-3:30pmGullah Cooking Demo (CH)
Please join Sallie Ann, the Gullah Diva, who will be here to talk
about Gullah Cooking and history. She grew up on Daufuskie and was a student of Pat Conroy. She is now working on her 3rd
cookbook
Monday, February 12 2pmGullah Tour of the IslandIt is the Unique Culture of enslaved West Africans who inhabited the Sea Islands of
North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida prior to and since the Civil War. As a whole, this area is known as the Gullah
Geechee Corridor. Gullah culture thrives throughout this Gullah
Corridor, which includes Hilton Head Island. Tour Guides, all of Gullah heritage, were born and raised on Hilton Head Island
before the bridge connection to the mainland. The Gullah people
are known for preserving more of their African linguistic and
cultural heritage than any other African-American community in
the United States.
Thursday, February 22 4pmGullah Choir (CH)
Come hear this fabulous group perform their black church music
Off the Tee For the month of January, we REALLY were Off the Tee! Due to Hurricane Matthew, the golf course was in desper-ate need of repair. The snow storm did not help much either! By the end of January, we installed the new irrigation for the whole course. Hole 2 was the first to be completed followed by Hole 1. Hole 3 was finished the last week of the month. Second Saturday Golf will resume on February 10 weather permitting. Hopefully Peggy Peirce will be baking up some of her delicious goodies for the group!

New Books in the Library for February“The Origin” by Dan Brown Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend a major announcement—the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever.” The evening’s host is Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old billionaire and futurist whose dazzling high-tech inventions and audacious predictions have made him a renowned global figure. Kirsch, who was one of Langdon’s first students at Harvard two decades earlier, is about to reveal an astonishing breakthrough . . . one that will answer two of the fundamental questions of human existence.
As the event begins, Langdon and several hundred guests find themselves captivated by an utterly original presentation, which Langdon realizes will be far more controversial than he ever imagined. But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch’s precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever. Reeling and facing an imminent threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape Bilbao. With him is Ambra Vidal, the elegant museum director who worked with Kirsch to stage the provocative event. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret. Navigating the dark corridors of hidden history and extrem e religion, Langdon and Vidal must evade a tormented enemy whose all-knowing power seems to emanate from Spain’s Royal Palace itself . . . and who will stop at nothing to silence Edmond Kirsch. On a trail marked by modern art and enigmatic symbols, Langdon and Vidal uncover clues that ultimately bring them face-to-face with Kirsch’s shocking discovery . . . and the breathtaking truth that has long eluded us.
"Promise Me Dad" by Joe BidenPromise Me, Dad chronicles the year that followed, which would be the most momentous and challenging in Joe Biden’s extraordinary life and career. Vice President Biden traveled more than a hundred thousand miles that year, across the world, dealing with crises in Ukraine, Central America, and Iraq. When a call came from New York, or Capitol Hill, or Kyiv, or Baghdad―“Joe, I need your help”―he responded. For twelve months, while Beau fought for and then lost his life, the vice president balanced the twin imperatives of living up to his responsibilities to his country and his responsibilities to his family. And never far away was the insistent and urgent question of whether he should seek the presidency in 2016.
The year brought real triumph and accomplishment, and wrenching pain. But even in the worst times, Biden was able to lean on the strength of his long, deep bonds with his family, on his faith, and on his deepening friendship with the man in the Oval Office, Barack Obama.
Writing with poignancy and immediacy, Joe Biden allows readers to feel the urgency of each moment, to experience the days when he felt unable to move forward as well as the days when he felt like he could not afford to stop.
This is a book written not just by the vice president, but by a father, grandfather, friend, and husband. Promise Me, Dad is a story of how family and friendships sustain us and how hope, purpose, and action can guide us through the pain of personal loss into the light of a new future.
