Disciplines of Lent

Lent begins February fourteenth, Ash Wednesday, and is a solemn call to repentance as we begin our baptismal pilgrimage to the waters of Easter. Lent is a time of repentance, returning to the Lord, our God, and reflecting on the meaning of being washed and welcomed children of God, who have been baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many people’s spiritual devotion and reflection during the 40 days of Lent involves practicing a “discipline.”

There are three classic disciplines of Lent: giving of alms to the poor, fasting and prayer. Many congregations focus on a Lenten mission that will meet the needs of people suffering from poverty or injustice. For example, Salem’s focus for Lent 2018 is Lenten Latrines! (If you have no idea what this means read more on the “We Are Sent” page.) Many congregations, as a way of encouraging more prayer and devotion, schedule midweek services like our Wednesday night worship and soup dinner. Many individuals elect to practice some form of fasting like giving up certain types of rich foods, curbing personal expenses, or living more simply.

By no means do we practice the disciplines of Lent in order to win God’s approval, favor or forgiveness! Rather we choose to practice a discipline of Lent as a reminder of the renewal of life and return to the Lord that baptism calls forth from us! Joined to the death and resurrection

of Jesus Christ in baptism, God graciously gives us forgiveness, salvation and eternal life. A Lenten discipline is practiced as thanksgiving for God’s gift of grace in Jesus Christ! A Lenten discipline is practiced to show solidarity with those who suffer poverty and injustice. A Lenten discipline is practiced as an antidote to self-indulgence.

As I indicated above, we as a congregation will provide some ways you can practice almsgiving, prayer, and fasting this Lent in community (Lenten Latrines, Midweek Lenten Soup Dinner and Worship). But, if you are also looking for ideas to practice individually, go to pages 6-10, where you will discover 5 more ideas. Pick one and go with it. Each one in some way connects to almsgiving, prayer, or fasting.

Blessings on your Lenten journey!

Pastor Kara

Lenten Long Drop Latrine Project

About 2.5 billion people in our world lack access to adequate sanitation. Without it, diseases spread throughout the water supply and food chain, making people through-out the community, especially children and the elderly, frequently sick. A carefully installed household latrine, along with training in hygiene and maintenance, leads to a healthier, safer community for all.During the 5 weeks of Lent there will be a special collection each Sunday. This gift will support sustainable development projects of ELCA World Hunger.

Council NotesNew Saturday evening service started on January 7th. There were 38 participants and the service was very well received by those in attendance. Please consider attending this more casual service (come as you are) to see what’s new. Music starts at 5:45 in the church nave, with the The service following at 6PM. This is a simple service, with no acolyte or assisting minister to start, and there is communion by intinction (bread that you dip in the wine). Pastor Peter from the synod presided at the service on Sunday January 7, which went very well. Pastor was pleased with the congregation’s participation. The council voted to send monies to the synod to make up the difference between what has been given to mission support by the

congregation for 2017, and the pledge that we made to the synod for mission support. We are a part of the greater church, which does so much good in the world. Electronic giving has started to increase. This is through an app called Give+ which will interface with our computerized donation recording system (Shepard’s Staff). Leah Conners has resigned from council, as she has moved. We wish her well. Martha Koval has been designated as a council member for one year to replace Leah.Council members plan to attend an all-day council retreat, provided by the synod, in February.Council members are to remind their committees to forward their minutes to Brenda at [email protected].

If you know someone who would like to receive a copy of the Lamplighter please call the office.
