SUNNYSIDE SCOOP FEBRUARY, 2017 Principal Points: February 2017 Homework Families, This past school year the topic of homework has been in the news cycle quite a bit. Many parents and teachers have long held philosophical beliefs about how much homework ele- mentary students should have, and the pendulum can swing to extremes on either end of the spec- trum: from the need for a lot of homework, to a desire for no homework. The first part of the year our leadership team took time to discuss this topic more in depth, including reading what the re- search really does say about homework. As research teaches us, homework in an of itself is not bad, but it does need to be purposeful to what students are working on in class. The Sunnyside Building Instructional Leadership Team (BILT) came up with a site-wide philosophy where we believe purposeful homework is: *Connected to the day’s learning objective *Can be completed independently *Will be addressed in class with feedback *Drives the teacher’s instruction As a building, each grade level also has put together homework statements for families to know the expectations. Building-wide, your child should not expect homework to take more than thirty minutes, give or take, on an average night. If your child is regularly taking more than 30 minutes to complete their homework, or cannot complete their homework independently on a regular basis (we know every child will need assistance at some point) we encourage you to contact the teacher to dis- cuss what homework is looking like at home to determine if any modifications need to be made. As a school we recognize our families have a lot on their plates, and our goal is to help our students be- come well rounded and balanced citizens as they grow and learn. As always, thank you for partnering with us. Dr. Nathan Flansburg Principal

Principal Points:

February 2017 Homework Families, This past school year the topic of homework has been in the news cycle quite a bit. Many parents and teachers have long held philosophical beliefs about how much homework ele-mentary students should have, and the pendulum can swing to extremes on either end of the spec-trum: from the need for a lot of homework, to a desire for no homework. The first part of the year our leadership team took time to discuss this topic more in depth, including reading what the re-search really does say about homework. If your child is regularly taking more than 30 minutes to complete their homework, or cannot complete their homework independently on a regular basis (we know every child will need assistance at some point) we encourage you to contact the teacher to dis-cuss what homework is looking like at home to determine if any modifications need to be made. Community Education:

In the past, Community Education has sent home a paper flier for all or many of the courses offered. However, in order to minimize the massive amounts of paper sent home, all Community Education courses are promot-ed on each school's website. To see what is offered go to: Sunnyside website --> hover over "Parent Resources" --> click on "E-Flyers"

Community Activities and Program Offerings:

In addition to the youth programs and enrichment opportunities available through the District's community education department, a number of activi-ties, camps and youth programs are hosted by area cities, local businesses, community organizations and school PTA groups. Please visit the Sunnyside Elementary School website (click on “Parent Resources” and then “E-Flyers”) for courses

Title One at Sunnyside Elementary School

Sunnyside Elementary is a Title One School. Title One funds are used to support additional literacy needs. Sunnyside Elementary wants to ensure that all children are making growth and are meeting their aca-demic goals. Teachers work together as a team and make decisions on how best to meet the literacy needs of each and every student. One way we help to ensure that children are making the needed growth, is by providing an additional small group in reading for those students who would benefit. In this small group, students meet with a reading intervention teacher for literacy instruction at his/her instructional reading level, in addition to meeting with their classroom teacher.

Please remember to call your child in if they are going to be gone!

Specialist Inserts Grade 1 Art In Art specialist, first grade artists explore the creative process using a variety of materials and techniques to create both two and three dimensional artworks. We focus on creating artworks using the elements of line, shape, color, form, space, and texture and identifying the elements of art in the world around us. We also make connections to artists, cultures, animals, and learn to reflect on personal meaning in their own art. Artists have designed an Art folder, mixed the primary and secondary colors, created a collage, painted a Miro Monster, explored texture and shapes in a crayon rubbing, molded a candle holder, and finally created an earthenware pinch pot. All major projects can be found in your child’s Artsonia art gallery: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=92692 You can also view the grade level projects on my teacher webpage at http://sunnysideartroom.weebly.com. Music First grade students have spent the majority of first semester mastering steady beat and working towards discovering one sound and two sounds on a beat. Students have practiced this rhythmic concept through the playing of instruments, singing games, rhythm games, and worksheets. Students will continue to experience and discover one and two sounds on a beat (we currently identify these as long-one sound on a beat and short-short-two sounds on a beat) throughout the coming semester. Because students are still practicing this concept all first grade students are developing (2) in this area and the goal is that they would be secure (3) in this concept by the end of the first grade year. Physical Education In Phy Ed. we started the year in 1st grade learning our squads and the routine of the gym. During our warm ups we learned many different exercises and worked on our locomotor movements, particularly Skipping , galloping, and hopping. We then worked on Chasing and fleeing with a number of tag games. Some other activities we did to build a base for skill development was Clean Out Your Back Yard. We were able to play that game using a variety of skills throughout the 1st semester. These skills include volleyball pass, football kicking, soccer kicking, basketball dribbling, and hockey stickhandling. Science First grade scientists explored many fields of science during the first semester. We started by looking at science and technology and how new understandings lead to new thinking and inventions. Students learned about animal adaptations in our birds unit by talking about specializations for survival with wings, beaks, and feet. We then learned about simple programming/coding using our new Lego WeDo 2.0 kits. Students built lego creations and used Chromebooks to program the motors and sensors to accomplish tasks. Dinosaurs roared into December and students learned about prehistoric times and how scientists have discovered information about the animals and plants that predated humans. Students are starting a solar system unit to better understand the sun, planets, and space around us. We will be doing two StarLab sessions in March! Technology During technology specialist, the first graders begin by checking out library books and listening to a book that relates to our topic or theme. We may focus on a particular genre, author, award winning books, or read a book that matches up with a skill students are working on in the classroom. Then we use laptops to work on basic computer skills, such as clicking, double clicking, right clicking, dragging, and using the keyboard. Our lab activities reinforce these skills and major concepts students are working on in the classroom. One of our major units this semester has been coding by using Bee-Bots, a type of robot. All of the online activities we use can be accessed on the Sunnyside website (https://sites.google.com/a/moundsviewschools.org/firstgradelablinks/).

Specialist Inserts Grade 2

Art

In Art specialist, second grade artists explore the creative process using a variety of materials and techniques.

We focus on using the elements of line, shape, color, texture, value, and space in the creation of their own

artwork and identifying the elements of art in the world around them. Second graders focus on the design

principles of balance and emphasis. Second grade artists explored primary and secondary color mixing,

created a collage, drew a falling leaf artwork focusing on shape and texture, printed a building and transformed

it into a paper mosaic, and are now making earthenware clay owls.

All of the major projects can be found in your child’s Artsonia art gallery:

http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=92692

You can also view the grade level projects on my teacher webpage at http://sunnysideartroom.weebly.com.

Music

Second grade students have been reviewing and mastering the rhythmic concepts of quarter notes and eighth

notes this semester. We call them ta and ti-ti in music class. Students have spent this semester labeling and

identifying these rhythmic concepts through chants, songs, instrument playing, and visual manipulatives. The

goal for the first semester for second grade students is to be either developing (2) or secure (3) in this concept

area.

Physical Education

In Phy Ed, the 2nd graders continued to work on locomotor skills such as skipping, hopping, and galloping

during their daily exercises. They then worked on skills related to a number of common activities. Including,

kicking in both football and soccer, passing in volleyball, dribbling, passing and shooting in basketball and

chasing and fleeing in a number of tag games.

Science

Second grade scientists explored many fields of science during the first semester. We started by looking at

science and technology and how new understandings lead to new thinking and inventions. Students learned

about magnets/magnetism and built electromagnets when discovering the relationships between magnets and

electricity. We then learned about simple programming/coding using our new Lego WeDo 2.0 kits. Students

built lego creations and used Chromebooks to program the motors and sensors to accomplish tasks. We did

many experiments and activities to learn about balance and motion during December. Students are starting a

solar system unit to better understand the sun, planets, and space around us. We will be doing two StarLab

sessions in March!

Technology

During technology specialist, the second graders begin by listening to a book that relates to our topic or theme.

We may focus on a particular genre, author, award winning books, or read a book that matches up with a skill

students are working on in the classroom. Then we use laptops to work on basic computer skills, such as

logging in, accessing the server to open and save our projects, keyboarding, and formatting documents in

Microsoft Word. One of our major units this semester has been coding by using Bee-Bots, a type of robot. We

are also starting to log in to our Google Apps for Education accounts. All of the online activities we use can be

accessed on the Sunnyside website (https://sites.google.com/a/moundsviewschools.org/secondgradelablinks/).

Specialist Inserts Grade 3 Art In Art specialist, third grade artists explore the creative process using a variety of materials and techniques in both two and three dimensional artworks. We focus on using the the elements of line, shape, form, color, texture, space, and value in the creation of their own artwork and to identify the elements in the world around them. Art lessons incorporate artists, cultures, science connections, and personal connections. Third grade artists have painted a Peter Max inspired Cosmic Rays painting, explored mixing the tertiary colors, created a torn-paper self-portrait, stamped a building print, painted birch trees, and finally are creating 3-D earthenware clay fish. All of the major projects can be found in your child’s Artsonia art gallery: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=92692 You can also view the grade level projects on my teacher webpage at http://sunnysideartroom.weebly.com. Music In addition to reviewing the rhythmic concepts of paired eighth notes and quarter notes as well as steady beat, third grade students have been discovering and practicing the melodic concept of Sol, Mi, and La. They have been exploring the relationship between these sounds as well as where they are placed on the treble clef staff. Students are still in the practice/developing stage of this concept so an achievement goal in this area for a 3rd grade student is developing (2) or secure (3). Physical Education In 3rd grade, students continue to work on their locomotor skills including skipping, hopping, and galloping during their daily exercises. We also then worked on sports skill development. This is not to develop the next pro athletes but to get the students to learn skills that will help them get involved and active on their own for a lifetime. Soccer and football kicking, volleyball setting, serving, and passing, basketball dribbling, passing and shooting, and hockey passing, shooting, and stickhandling. Science Third grade scientists explored many fields of science during the first semester. We started by looking at science and technology and how new understandings lead to new thinking and inventions. Students learned about light and how it travels, bends, reflects, and is recognized by our eyes. We then learned about simple programming/coding using our new Lego WeDo 2.0 kits. Students built lego creations and used Chromebooks to program the motors and sensors to accomplish tasks. Students learned about the properties that allow objects to sink or float in water including density, displacement, and shape. We did many experiments and activities to learn about sound and sound waves in January. Students have also been looking at how to create a science fair project, and we have carefully gone over the expectations for the Science Fair. Third graders are encouraged to participate in the Science Fair, but it is not required. We will be doing two StarLab sessions in March!

Specialist Inserts Grade 4 Art In Art specialist, fourth grade artists explore the creative process using a variety of materials and techniques in both two and three dimensional artworks. We focus on identifying the elements of line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value in their own artwork and the world around them. Fourth graders focus on the design principles of contrast, repetition, emphasis, and pattern. Art lessons incorporate artists, cultures, science connections, and personal connections. Fourth grade artists have designed an Art folder, painted value pumpkins, drew 3-D cosmic forms, drew Wayne Theibaud inspired cakes, printed cityscapes, and created an earthenware clay cylinder face pot. All of the major projects can be found in your child’s Artsonia art gallery: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=92692 You can also view the grade level projects on my teacher webpage at http://sunnysideartroom.weebly.com. Music Fourth grade students have been discovering and practicing the notes of B,A, and G. They have been practicing where the notes are placed on the staff as well as how to play the notes on the recorder. Students are still in the practice/developing stage of this concept so an achievement goal in this area for a 4th grade student is developing (2) or secure (3). If your student is demonstrating a beginning (1) level of achievement that is OK! We are learning and practicing together and aiming for growth in the next learning/grading cycle. Physical Education In Phy Ed. in the 4th grade, We are continuing to work on Locomotor movements along with skill development in a variety of sports. SunnySide P.E. is not trying to develop professional athletes, yet we are striving to develop skills well enough that the students feel confident they could go to a park and use those skills to be active for a lifetime. Soccer and football kicking, volleyball passing, setting and serving, basketball dribbling, passing and shooting, hockey stick handling, shooting, and passing. Science Fourth grade scientists explored many fields of science during the first semester. We started by looking at science and technology and how new understandings lead to new thinking and inventions. We have been working on each unit through the lens of the scientific method. Students learned about structures and engineering through a bridge building unit. We then learned about electricity, how to build circuits, generation and transmission of power, and its relationship to magnets. We did many experiments and activities to learn about density and buoyancy. Students have also been looking at how to create a science fair project, and we have carefully gone over the expectations for the Science Fair. Fourth graders are encouraged to participate in the Science Fair, but it is not required. Students not doing a Science Fair project will be able to show their understanding of the experiment standard in another way. We will be doing two StarLab sessions in March!

Specialist Inserts Grade 5 Art In Art specialist, fifth grade artists explore the creative process using a variety of materials and techniques in both two and three dimensional artworks. We focus on identifying the elements of line, shape, color, texture, space, and value in their own artwork and the world around them. Fifth graders focus on the design principles of pattern, emphasis, balance, and movement. Art lessons incorporate artists, cultures, science connections, and personal connections. Fifth grade artists have designed a Zentangle name Art folder, painted a value leaf, watercolor painted Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls, printed a Gelli monoprint of a leaf and an abstract design, drew a cityscape in one-point perspective, and finally modeled an earthenware clay kindness pendant. All of the major projects can be found in your child’s Artsonia art gallery: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=92692 You can also view the grade level projects on my teacher webpage at http://sunnysideartroom.weebly.com. Music Fifth grade students have been discovering and practicing the notes of the treble clef staff-with a specific focus on B, A, and G. They have been practicing where the notes are placed on the staff as well as how to play the notes on the recorder. The aim is that 5th grade students are in the developing (2) or secure (3) stage of this concept. If your student is demonstrating a beginning (1) level of achievement that is OK! We are learning and practicing together and aiming for growth in the next practicing cycle. Physical Education In 5th grade we wrap up the work we have done on locomotor skills and look more into strategies and teamwork opportunities. We are not looking to develop professional athletes, rather our goal is to develop confidence in the skills and strategies they are learning in order to play at a park or go to other places and be active for a lifetime. Skills we covered were kicking in Football and soccer, passing, setting, and serving in volleyball, dribbling, shooting, and passing in basketball, stickhandling, passing and shooting in hockey and a variety of fitness stations on our fitness days. Science Fifth grade scientists explored many fields of science during the first semester. We started by looking at science and technology and how new understandings lead to new thinking and inventions. We have been working on each unit through the lens of the scientific method. Students learned about structures and engineering through a bridge building unit. We then learned about pendulums, forces, motion, and gravity. We did many experiments and activities to learn about which variables can impact the period of a pendulum (the time it takes for one full swing). Students have also been looking at how to create a science fair project, and we have carefully gone over the expectations for the Science Fair. Fifth graders are strongly encouraged to participate in the Science Fair, but it is not required. Students not doing a Science Fair project will be able to show their understanding of the experiment standard in another way. Also, we will be doing two StarLab sessions in March!
