On January 14th, MD5M Lions KidSight Minnesota Chairperson Dennis Kelly was informed by International Director Lion Bruce Beck that LCIF approved the MD5M Lions KidSight Minnesota Standard Grant for $100,000! This is great news for Kid Sight MN! Here are the next steps for KidSight:

1. The vision screening systems will be ordered the week of January 23rd.

2. Systems will be shipped to District Coordinators.

3. Planning is underway for District training sessions.

4. Develop dry run sessions which will review the complete vision screening process. (5M-5 has already com-

pleted 3 screenings!)

5. Prepare to conduct vision screening sessions in our Minnesota Child Care Association (MCCA) partner loca-

tions.

Thank you to all who stopped by the KidSight MN information table at the Mid-Winter Convention. Bryan Ball, Terri-tory Manager with School Health Corporation was on hand to answer the more technical questions that have been asked about the SPOT Vision Screener. To date, 5M-5 Clubs have pledged and donated $35,200 to 5M-5 KidSight. Each District was responsible for just over $18,000 towards the purchase of the screeners. The additional funds are placed in a restricted fund to maintain the equipment for years to come. Thank you to the Lions of the following clubs for donating to 5M-5 KidSight: Twin Cities Airport, Lions of Minneapo-lis, St. Louis Park, Northeast, Maple Grove, Richfield, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park Lady Lions, St. Bonifacius, New Hope, Edina, Camden, and Eden Prairie. Your financial contribution is greatly appreciated! Kid Sight MN has applied for 501c3 status and is eager to receive the approved status! Once this is complete, those clubs with gambling funds who have committed to donate will be contacted. If you would like a presentation made at your club, please contact Lions Bill and Shari Thurston at [email protected] or 1VDGE Rob Rand at [email protected]. Kid Sight MN has a mission is to ensure that all kids from 6 months to 6 years of age receive vision screening and

follow up care because every child deserves to see the world clearly.

Thank You! Thank you to the Lions of 5M-5 for supporting the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation during the Parade of Checks at the Mid-Winter Convention. Lions of 5M-5 donated over $26,000 along with thousands of used eye glasses. We appre-ciate the continued support! Minnesota Lions Eye Surgery Center Since the opening of the first phase in September 2016, the Minnesota Lions Eye Surgery Center (MLESC) has been a welcomed additional to the University of Minnesota’s Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences. After not having on-campus surgical space for several decades, the MLESC now allows for the eye surgeons to perform their pro-cedures without the hassle of traveling off-site to the Phillips Eye Institute or Fairview Hospital – Southdale. This off-site scheduling created inefficiencies with the doctors and took up the patients’ time. Having this new on-site part of the department means better use of time and more opportunities to handle patients. Currently, the MLESC is handling four to five surgeries per day. It may not seem like much now but, considering the U of M wasn’t doing any on-campus procedures until just a few months ago, it is actually great progress. Having this surgery center required the need to acquire equipment and get staff in place. In addition, the doctors at the U of M have begun shifting their surgeries from off-site locations to the new surgery center. As more and more procedures are scheduled, the daily use of the surgery center will increase. If things go according to plan, the MLESC will be the site of 20 to 25 sur-geries per day within several months. We have paid $750,000.00 towards our $4 Million pledge to the Minnesota Lions Eye Surgery Center. By the end of June, the MLVF will have added another $250,000.00 payment to the total. This will mean we will have covered $1 Million overall, which is 25% of the pledge. This is all due to the contributions that Lions across Minnesota have made to the MLVF. We can’t do this without you and we thank you for your generosity. Please keep the eye surgery center in mind when you are making you donations towards the MLVF. Let’s keep supporting the efforts at the U of M in helping those with visual impairments and for the search to cure blindness or low-vision problems. Spring University Tour With the spring coming our way very soon, please make note of the date for the tour at the University of Minnesota. Saturday, May 6th will be the day for you to check out the vision and hearing clinics & facilities at the U of M. If you’re a new Lion or someone who hasn’t been on the tour for quite some time, it is recommended to come down for a visit. You get to hear some great speakers, see some interesting presentations and check out the latest additions to the vi-sion and hearing departments. You will also get a box lunch for free and have an opportunity to go tour the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank in the afternoon. If you’re interested, please let PDG Kevin or 1VDGE Rob know. We can help you get registered for the tour and will be happy to see you on May 6th! Thank you Lions, Lioness and Leos of 5M-5 for truly being “Knights of the Blind.” PDG Kevin Walsh 1VDGE Rob Rand [email protected] [email protected] C) 612.810.6075 C) 612.715.6055

“One Team, One Fight”

Greetings 5M-5 Lions!

We kicked off the New Year with a bang!

The Mid-Winter Convention was AWESOME!!!! We

had some big changes. Memorial moved to Saturday

morning 9am, and Friday we added some group projects.

With this being the 100 year celebration for Lions, we

added 4 group projects using the 4 four Centennial Ser-

vice Challenge Campaigns; Engaging our Youth, Shar-

ing the Vision, Relieving the Hunger and Protecting

our Environment. Vision – We collected and sorted 78 boxes of Glasses

which is an estimated 36,000 glasses.

Also, Lions Kid Sight was on site with their new eye

screening devices for Lions to get a hands-on experience

and learn what a great project this is.

Hunger – We brought in “Feed My Starving Children”

and had a fantastic time while packing 108 cases or

23,328 meals.

Environment – We built 100 Bird Feeders that Lions

could either take to donate themselves or were collected

and are being donated to local nursing homes for the resi-

dents to enjoy.

Youth –Our Middle School and High School LEO groups

were there and were working side by side with the Lions

on all these projects. Feedback from the LEO kids is they

loved it and can’t wait until next year to come participate

again.

5M-5 also collected thousands of socks, coats and other

items for Allen Law.

Hospitality room winners: Hopkins/Minnetonka #1 Cam-

den/Robbinsdale #2 and New Hope #3

Crock Pot Challenge – Crystal Lions were the winners

with their Chicago/Italian Beef Dish

We had a record 37 Everyday Hero awards presented at

our Celebration Dinner, Saturday night. Congratulations

to all the 2017 5M-5 Lions who received this award.

International Director Melvyn Bray and his wife Lion

Ginny were wonderful guests. They worked very hard at

the Feed My Starving Children project and took the Room

Judging very seriously. We couldn’t have asked for better

Lions to join us for our convention. Look for pictures

posted on our Facebook page and websites. International

President Chancellor Bob Corlew has asked us to Climb

New Mountains; well 5M-5 is doing just that! Thank you

everyone for a great convention!

Your Global Membership Team has been busy.

They’ve set up a Guiding Lion Training Session,

Monday, February 27th. Look for more info on this in the

Informer and on our website.

Now - the big news… We want to welcome a new club to

our 5M-5 family. The new Maple Plain Lions are up and

running! PID Brian Sheehan was the guest speaker and

inducted the new officers into Lionism at their Charter

night.

Hey did you hear PID Brian Sheehan is run-

ning for 3rd Vice President for Lions Clubs

International? Look for some fundraising

events coming up in our district. Please help

us support one of our multiple members!

Look for some great seminars and training op-

portunities from our Global Membership Team.

In celebration of 100 years of service, Lions

Clubs International worked with the United

States Mint to produce a limited-edition silver

dollar coin.

The coin features Lions founder Melvin Jones and the Li-

ons Clubs logo on the front and a family of lions with a

globe behind them on the reverse. Each coin is packaged

in its own presentation case and is accompanied by a cer-

tificate of authenticity. For a limited time only, order this

coin on the Lions Clubs International website.

Make sure you keep checking out our website, http://

www.lions5m-5.org . This is a great place to advertise

your club events and projects. Our website continues to

have updates and changes, so keep checking back to see

what’s new.

Please keep me posted of your upcoming club events at

[email protected], as I would like to see your clubs

in action.

Remember, any opportunity you get, ASK 1!

As always, we look forward to serving all of you.

Hi Everybody!!

The Mid-Winter Convention was a total success.

The meals where packed and

the bird feeders where built and

everyone had fun!!

The crock pot contest was

yummy and the Hospitality

rooms that where decorated

where all winners.

The band, The Percola-

tors, where very accommodat-

ing. They let me drum a couple

of tunes. Very fun. I hope next year's conven-

tion will run as smooth as it did this year.

Now back to work!! I want all the clubs to send

one or two of there members to the Guiding Lion

Training on the 27th of February, held at the Crys-

tal VFW at 6:00. I especially like the clubs with

20 members or less to attend.

My Motto "Strength in Numbers"!!!!!!

Thank You all !!

Gov. Elect

Lion Marty LaBelle

Hello Lions of 5M-5!

Congratulations to the newly chartered Maple Plain Li-

January 25th and started

with 37 members. Wel-

come Leos!

So much fun at this year’s Mid-Winter Convention!

Thank you to everyone who helped, volunteered, partici-

pated and attended. I enjoyed seeing so many Lions

working together during the Centennial Service Chal-

lenge activities as well as the great conversations and

business that happened all weekend long. I feel like the

hospitality rooms get better every year and I am looking

forward to next year’s Chicago theme already!

The MD5M Convention is scheduled for April 21st, 22nd

and 23rd in Bemidji, MN. If you are planning to attend

don’t forget to register by March 1st for the early bird

Greetings fellow Lions, WOW!!! What a GREAT response for the Mid-winter Con-vention collection of socks, winter clothing, and money to purchase bus tokens for the homeless in our community! Through your efforts, Lions, we collected 7,693 items that were given to Allan Law, the “Sandwich Man”, to distrib-ute . Each night, seven nights a week, Allan goes under the bridges and on the streets to bring food and clothing to those in need. Allan visits with 1,500 to 2,000 homeless each night, and these people humbly say “Thank you” to the Lions of 5M5! Something new this year---we made 2,378 “energy packs” for Allan to hand out to those in need, and they loved them! On the Friday morning of our convention, the out door temperature was 23 below zero, and the 3,714 pairs of socks, 61 hats, 27 scarfs, 73 jackets, and 63 pairs of warm gloves that the 5M5 lions donated went right to the hands, heads, and feet of those who desperately need them. Again, these people say “Thanks you, Lions”! And many thanks for the hundreds of you Lions who con-tributed in so many ways to make this such a successful drive to help the less fortunate in our community! Once again, you lived and practiced our Lion’s motto, “WE SERVE”!!! Lion Mike Gruidl 5M5 Speakers and Program Chair [email protected] P.S. Although he is experiencing some health problems, Allan is available to speak to your club. His direct cell phone number is (612) 423-9923, and he LOVES THE LIONS!!

LITPC YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP I am happy to say that this past June, one of the 2 Youth

Scholarship winners was from Minnesota!! She received a

$2,500 scholarship!! This was the 5th year that scholarships

were given from the LITPC.

The most important aspect of the Youth Scholarship is to

help a young person pursue his/her education and follow

their dreams!!

The LITPC (Lions International Trading Pin Club) takes

great pride in fulfilling the motto of Lions Clubs Interna-

tional “WE SERVE”. During the SightFirst II Campaign,

the Pin Traders contributed US $144,000 to LCIF.

The Youth Scholarship Program is another example of the

Pin Trader’s slogan, “Lions First”. The 5M Pin Traders

Club along with 13 other Pin Trader Clubs from across the

USA support the LITPC Scholarship Program.

Selection of a scholarship recipient is based on academic

achievement, an essay stating the student’s goals, a state-

ment of reason(s) for applying and an overview of work,

community and school service, and letters of recommenda-

tion. Applications and supporting documentation are to be

completed and submitted to the pin trading club scholarship

chairman named below by March 1, 2017.

The Hopkins Noontime Li-ons were presented this pencil drawing by Lion Kristin Morin at our De-cember holiday party. The artist is “James” who is supported by TSE, Inc.; enriching the lives of people with dis-abilities through employ-ment and community con-nections. James partici-pated in “Made In The Shade” last Septem-ber. Made in the Shade is a walk, roll and run around Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis hosted by eight organizations, all supporting programs serv-ing people with disabili-ties. Over 800 people participate. One of the activities was an art con-test. Lion Kristin said most of the drawings were of the lake and park. But James was inspired by the Lions helping to make their event a success!

The Hopkins Noontime Lions have been helping

with grilling for the picnic for many years. The picnic has gotten to be so popular and suc-cessful that the New Hope Lions Club has been helping with the grilling for the past two years. The Lions grill approximately 1,000 hamburgers in about three hours.

Environmental Goals for Clubs & Districts

Welcome to the 100th year of Lions. To help celebrate our 100 years of service to mankind we would like to let everyone

know what we as Lions are doing to help protect our environment.

This year especially we want to make an impact on what we do both in our daily lives and in our communities that we live

in. To help reach the goal of 100 million people impacted by what we do we are asking each district and club to sponsor an

environmental project.

Community Clean-up project: A Lions community clean-up is a great way to improve the environment and work alongside Lions, Lioness, Leos and

members of your community on a “hands-on” high-visibility service project.

Removing debris from a roadway, waterway, nature trail, school or train station.

Clearing debris away after a heavy rain or flood.

Raking autumn leaves.

Removing graffiti from public buildings, bridges or fences.

Landscaping a public area.

Recycling: Organize a recycling program by working with local recycling organizations.

Eyeglasses.

Hearing aids.

Electronics (Batteries, Cell phone, computers).

Books, magazines, telephone books.

Plastics.

Paint.

Inkjet cartridges.

Shoes.

Clothing.

Medical equipment such as wheelchairs and crutches.

Tree Planting: Trees play an important role in sustaining a healthy environment. Every tree planted by a Lion is part of a large scale effort

by members around the world to make a significant impact on the environment.

Guidelines for planning your project.

Evaluate your community needs.

Consult with local authorities to determine the appropriate tree species for your local area.

Partner with local groups that can help leverage resources and expertise.

Determine the best project for the community.

Outline a plan and include procedures, material needs and expenses.

Submit the plan and budget to the club or district for approval.

Invite local media to observe the project.
