Pg. 2 February 2017 Thank you for supporting your local Community Association and your local businesses!

With fee reporting changes coming soon, now is the perfect time for a second opinion.

Like many Canadian investors, you may be concerned about the cost of the advice you are receiving from your financial advisor. By mid- 2017, investors in Canada will receive two new reports with details on the cost and performance of their investment account(s). This is excellent news for investors as these new reports will result in more information and enhanced transparency,

Here at RBC Dominion Securities, we support additional transparency about fees and performance or any reporting framework that allows our clients to have a clear understanding of how we are helping them achieve their financial goals. Thanks to the vast resources our clients have access to—such as award-winning research, cutting-edge trading technology, and wealth management specialists in estate planning, Wills, financial plans, business owner planning and more—we are confident in the value they receive for the fees they pay.

Has your current financial advisor been abundantly clear with you about fees? If so, do you feel you are receiving true value for these fees? If not, I’d be happy to offer a complimentary review of your financial affairs. Our fee-based discretionary investment and planning strategies are suitable for portfolios of $1 million or more.

Even if you are satisfied with your advisor, a second opinion can highlight new opportunities and tax-efficient solutions. With a second opinion, you’ve got nothing to lose – and everything to gain.

To help achieve your retirement goals, minimize taxes or boost your investment cash flow, act now to arrange your

complimentary personalized financial snapshot.

Please contact us at (403) 299-6564 or email [email protected] for more information.

Jeff Bergen is a Portfolio Manager with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

How much are you paying for financial advice?

RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

To get the value you deserve for your fees, you need to ask the big questions.

• Do I know exactly what I pay for investment guidance?

• Am I getting good value?

• Do I have access to estate and tax planning experts?

If you answered “no” even once, contact me for a complimentary second opinion on your portfolio – and put my 24 years of experience to work for you.

City of Calgary Updates & Articlestay smart About Parking

bans this winterAfter heavy snowfall, The City may declare a parking ban along snow routes. Snow routes are located on collector roads and most bus routes, and can be identified throughout the city by blue signs with a white snowflake.

The snow route parking ban program supports snow plowing operations by removing parked vehicles from the streets, and allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently and effectively. During a ban, parking will be temporarily restricted on designated snow routes for up to 72 hours.

how sNow routes work:

• The City will issue an advisory when a parking ban will be implemented within the next 1-2 days.

• The City will declare a parking ban is in effect when crews finish plowing Priority One routes, but before they start on Priority Two routes (collector roads, bus routes, etc.) Parking bans will be in effect for up to 72 hours or until The City declares they have been lifted.

• Snow clearing operations will be ongoing. Parked cars must be moved from snow routes when a parking ban is called. Vehicles that remain parked on these roads during the ban are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking ticket and tow.

Stay informed about parking bans this winter by subscribing to email alerts at Calgary.ca/snow, following @yyctransport on Twitter, calling 311 and listening to the automated message, and watching local news or listening to the radio.

Winter can be a challenging time for people to get around their neighbourhood. A person with reduced mobility, a parent with a stroller or even just someone carrying bags from their car to their door can easily slip on ice and snow on sidewalks and pathways. Consider helping your neighbours and community by being a Snow Angel and keeping walkways clear of snow and ice!

The Snow Angels campaign encourages Calgarians to look out for those who may need assistance with snow removal. Now in its 13 year, it’s one way that community members can come together and help each other out.

If you, or someone you know has been helped by a Snow Angel, call 311 or go on line to recognize them and nominate them prizes.

For more information visit calgary.ca/SnowAngels.

Be a Snow Angel!

THE COMMON REDPOLL is an energetic, little songbird with a flaming red cap, black throat, whitish rump and streaked back. This songbird a highly sociable, noisy, chattering bird that travels in large flocks of several hundred birds. It is one of the finch family’s most northern breeders and is found circumpolar.

Fun Facts: you can find the Common Redpoll from April through September in the yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories, and even across into Newfoundland and Labrador. The Common Redpoll migrates south into the lower Canadian provinces in late autumn.

In Alberta, we are likely to see the Common Redpoll in the winter when they might forage as large groups in weedy fields or small tree lots.

Sightings can be scare when there are

The Common Redpoll

winter food shortages in their normal wintering range. This forces them to go even farther south, a behaviour called an “irruption.” Common Redpolls tend to exhibit this irruptive behaviour every second year to match the production cycle of catkins on birch and alder trees.

This songbird likes the small high-energy seeds of birch and alder trees and can eat 42% of their body mass every day!

If you want to attract them to your yard you can plant birch trees, but we city folks are most likely to see them at a backyard feeder in the winter where they favour nyger seed offerings.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild bird or animal in distress, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society hotline at 403-239-2488, for tips, instructions and advice, or look at the website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

Encouraging a positive faith, putting Godfirst to claim rich blessings

Spiritual Prosperity with Rev. Bruce R.

Elvis Sheasby

If we can be open to the mystery of spiritual growth beyond our human lives, perhaps we can be inspired to live with the possibilities of growth as we live in this world.

Exercise Your Growth!1. Consider some seeds that have been planted in your life by others, or that you can plant in others’ lives, that have possibilities for growth.

2. Consider how accepting that we are all imperfect can help lead you to the divine act of forgiveness.

3. Join me on Sundays at 10:30 at the Delta Calgary South for Your Grace Land where we focus on a positive faith and living with Inspirational Core Values including Growth.

Bruce Reinhold Elvis Sheasby is a life coachwith a passion for helping others connect

Inspirational Core Values to everyday life. He is leader of Your Grace Land church services and

co-host of Your Grace Land Radio. His upcoming book is Your Grace Land – Achieving Success with Inspirational Core Values. For more information,

visit www.yourgraceland.com

I was intrigued to learn from my daughter’s orthodontist that the position of the jaw can only be moved when there is room, when the bones are not too compressed while a youth is still growing. So often, nature reveals - on the physical level - principals which have an application on the emotional, mental, and spiritual planes. Movement requires space, and growth requires room to grow.

None of us are perfect, and that means, precisely, that all of us have room to grow. Acknowledging our own imperfection goes a long way to accept the imperfection in others, and even to

consider forgiveness of oneself and others as a bridge to spiritual growth.

Over the years, in my role as minister, I have presided at many funeral and memorial services and, often, have been asked to sing a favorite song of mine, In the bulb there is a flower. It’s a positive song by Natalie Sleeth, written when she was pondering the imminent death of a loved one. Incorporating the words of T.S. Eliot, “in our end is our beginning” the song reflects on growth in nature as a paradigm for understanding spiritual growth, even beyond the physical body.

“In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree, in cocoons a hidden promise,

butterflies will soon be free. In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something

God alone can see. In our end is our beginning, in our time infinity. In our doubt, there is believing, in our time eternity. In our

death, a resurrection, at the last a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God

alone can see.”

Is Feng Shui for me?Would you like to generate more cash flow in your life, and have that cash pool in your bank account rather than drain out as fast as it flows in?

Does your health need a boost, could your lifestyle in terms of health use an overhaul? Would you like your relationships with family or relatives to improve?

Feng Shui FAQ’sWhen is the best time to have a Feng Shui Consultation?

Feng Shui explores the intimate connection between you and your environment, therefore any time you’d like to feel a shift in your current lifestyle is the right time.

How often do I need a consultation?

It depends on how many areas of your life you’d like to see changed. A single consultation can produce many positive results, and because our lives are always evolving, I recommend a “tune-up” whenever making an important change in your life.

Can I apply Feng Shui to any size space?

Yes, it can benefit any environment, apartments, large estates, offices, landscapes, or even a single room.

Will Feng Shui impose design restrictions on me?

No, your personal style will be supported and encouraged throughout our consultation.

How long does it take to experience results?

In many cases people experience results within the first week of the appointment. It will depend on your belief and commitment in the recommended changes.

If you answered YES to any of the these questions, then a Feng Shui

consultaion is for you!

Free Family Fun For the holiday weekend!

fAMilY DAY weekeND is a perfect time to slow down, reconnect with loved ones and create lasting memories together. Finding holiday activities everyone will enjoy can be a challenge, but this year it will be a walk in the park.

The City of Calgary will be hosting a free We Are Family event on Sunday, February 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Bring the kids for a fun-filled afternoon of nature games, wildlife crafts, scavenger hunts and more. Enjoy a guided walk around the park or try out our spotting scopes to catch a glimpse of the sanctuary’s high flyers.

In February, with the celebration of Valentine’s Day, thoughts turn to love and other kind feelings. February 14th is also International Book Giving Day which is a volunteer-led

initiative that aims to get books into the hands of as many children as possible.

three ways you might celebrate international book giving Day: • Gift a book to a child in your life • Leave a book in a waiting room or at a bus stop for children to read (and keep) • Donate a new or gently-used book to a local hospital, shelter or to calgary reads book bank that helps get books into the hands of Calgary children who have few or none of their own at home.

our favourite book of the Monththis book is a beautiful way to help children understand

their feelings. Borrow a copy from your school or public library and get cozy with your family and talk about and share your feelings.

iN MY heArt: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek (Author), Christine Roussey (Illustrator)

Sometimes my heart feels like a big yellow star, shiny and bright.I smile from ear to ear and twirl around so fast,I feel as if I could take off into the sky. This is when my heart is happy.

Happiness, sadness, bravery, anger, shyness . . . our hearts can feel so many feelings! Some make us feel as light as a balloon, others as heavy as an elephant. In My Heart explores a full range of emotions, describing how they feel physically, inside. With language that is lyrical but also direct, young children will be empowered by this new vocabulary and able to practice articulating and identifying their own emotions.

Calgary Reads helps children learn to read with confidence and joy. This includes helping children in Calgary to have their own books at home; supporting parents and caregivers to help their child develop literacy skills; and engaging businesses and the community to make reading a priority.

Explore our website for ways you can support our work. You’ll also find resources to help your child develop critical literacy skills and the joy of reading: calgaryreads.com

outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians in the previous year. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups and organizations are nominated in five major award categories, for a total of 13 awards.

The City of Calgary encourages all Calgarians to look to their neighbours, colleagues, community leaders, local organizations and businesses for those who could qualify as recipients of the Calgary Awards.

The Calgary Awards are for Calgarians. Individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, community groups and other organizations can all be nominated. For specific eligibility requirements, how to nominate someone in your community and for more information visit: calgary.ca/calgaryawards. Nominations close on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Cleaning and washing clothes are a constant household chore during the winter months. Kids are always tracking in mud or snow, there’s dust

building up from keeping windows closed, and winter sports laundry is always piling up.

Don’t let it get you down, however. There are many ways you can keep your house tidy, starting with these three tips to ease the winter cleaning blues:

• keep things organized: It’s easy to leave that scarf on the ground, or boots at the bottom of the stairs. The problem is one or two items can easily turn into 10, meaning a messy house in no time. Encourage the family to clean as they go by putting items in their proper place. This will keep the house looking clean and tidy for longer.

• get everyone to pitch in: Cleaning should never be only one person’s responsibility. Encourage everyone in the family to ‘own’ a cleaning chore. If each person feels responsible for their family tasks, a lot more of the house will be kept clean.

•wash in cold water: To keep energy costs down and your laundry fresh, switch to a detergent that is formulated to perform in cold water.

With these ideas under your belt, winter cleaning costs can be reduced and the laundry room can become a sweet smelling headache-free zone.

The City is making upgrades to provide a better road network by accommodating existing and future traffic volumes on Bow Trail SW.

This particular project involves a number of features:

• Bow Trail widening from two to four lanes between Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street SW,

• Intersection improvements at 85 Street and Bow Trail by adding dedicated left- and right-turn lanes as well as through lanes in each direction,

• A pathway along Bow Trail connecting pathways on Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street SW.

you may have noticed late last year work started on improving the intersection at Bow Trail and 85 Street SW. This work included widening southbound 85 Street south of Bow Trail to two lanes, matching the road alignment further south. Improvements also included extending the sidewalk on the west side of 85 Street north to Bow Trail. For complete information, project updates, and timelines, please visit calgary.ca/bowtrail-swrr.

Hello Calgary Bow,Thank you to everyone who stopped in at my annual Winter Open House in January. It was nice to talk with you about our hopes and goals for the New year, and for this month’s newsletter. I would like to reflect on some of the steps our government has taken so far to support all Albertans in 2017.

By the end of January, six out of every ten Albertans will have received their first Carbon Levy rebate cheque. In 2017, a single adult earning up to $47,500 per year will receive a rebate of $200. A couple earning up to $95,000 per year will receive $300. you will automatically receive these rebates if you filed your 2015 Income Tax Return. If you qualify for the climate levy rebate but did not receive one, please contact my office and my team will assist you.

January 1 also marked a 33% decrease in small business tax for Albertans, which will save small business owners $185 million this year alone. Alberta now has the second-lowest small business rate in Canada. We can celebrate the fact that our province maintains the lowest

overall tax regime in Canada - with no provincial sales tax, health premium or payroll tax - meaning Albertans across all income ranges continue to pay the lowest overall taxes when compared to other provinces.

As part of our strategy to encourage investment in non-traditional sectors with strong job creation potential, the Government of Alberta has created an Alberta Investor Tax Credit (AITC). This credit is applicable across sectors, offering a 30% tax credit to investors who provide capital to Alberta small businesses doing research, development or commercialization of new technology, products or processes. This program will assist small and medium sized businesses in acquiring equity financing from individual and corporate investors who will help them grow their businesses.

A Capital Investment Tax Credit also came into effect on January 16, 2017, providing $70 million in tax credits for investment in manufacturing, processing and tourism infrastructure that will spur economic diversification and job creation. This two-year program provides a non-refundable tax credit valued at 10% for

corporations eligible capital expenditures up to $5 million.

This year Canada celebrates 150 years of Confederation and the provincial government has created a “Canada 150 Grant,” awarding $2 million dollars to support community projects that align with the themes of “Diversity and Inclusion, Reconciliation, Engaging and Inspiring youth or Connecting Canadians with Nature and Raising Environmental Stewardship.” I am excited to connect with you at celebrations of this milestone around the constituency in the coming months.

As this is a new year, please remember that the Government of Alberta is no longer providing renewal notices for automobile registration. I encourage you to check your vehicle registration and renew for the year before it expires, and sign up for electronic reminders.

Sincerely,

Deborah Drever, MLA Calgary - Bow

No matter how hard you try, sometimes it can be difficult to get enough sleep with work deadlines and other worries on your mind. In fact, according

to a survey conducted by the Canadian Health Food Association, 73 per cent of Canadians say that a lack of sleep negatively affects their health.

Unfortunately, sleep deprivation can impact your immune cells and make it difficult for your body to identify and fight cold and flu bugs. It can also affect your diet by altering your “hunger hormones” and increasing your desire to indulge on sugary and salty foods. This can influence the careful nutrient balance needed for a healthy immune system.

The percentage of adults who sleep less than six hours a night is currently greater than at any other time on record. If you're having trouble falling or staying asleep, try cutting down on screen time before bed — including television, cellphone and computer use. This can help you sleep more soundly, as studies show that blue light emitted from devices confuses our biological clocks and sleep patterns.

You can also try these natural health products:

VitAMiN D. Those with lower levels of vitamin D were found to sleep less. If you fall into this category, you might want to try vitamin D supplementation, especially during the colder months when the lack of sunshine makes getting enough of it extremely difficult.

MAgNesiuM. This mineral helps calm the nervous system, induces relaxation, reduces blood pressure, and even increases energy during the day — all important factors when trying to get some rest.

MelAtoNiN. This nerve hormone is well known in the natural health world for increasing total sleep time and reducing the amount of time it takes to fall asleep.
