The Messenger
In this season of reflection, it is appropriate to spend some time ex-
ploring climate change and what it means for all of creation – in-
cluding how we live in our world.
This year, our Sunday morning schedule will be different during the
five weeks of Lent. We’ll have one worship service at 9:00 a.m., fol-
lowed by a time for coffee and conversation. Then, we’ll re-convene
to the sanctuary at 10:15am by a speaker on the topic with time for
questions and answers. There will also be activities for kids
available each week. (Confirmation and high-school youth are
encouraged to attend the series.)
Here is the schedule for the series…
February 14 – Claire Curran & Trevor Lenzinger of Minnesota In-
terfaith Power & Light, will be our presenters as we learn about the
Paris Climate Talks and actions taken at this historic event.
February 21 – Dr Mark Boslough, Physicist for Sandia National
Laboratories, Albuquerque, and adjunct professor in Earth and Plan-
etary Sciences Department at the University of New Mexico. He’s
also appeared on NOVA (on PBS) and the National Geographic
channel. (He’s also went to high school with Pastor Julie!) He will
speak about climate change in general.
February 28 - Dr. Mark Seeley, Meterologist, University of Minne-
sota (You may have heard him on MPR.) He will speak about climate
change and Minnesota.

Climate Change and
Care of Creation:
A Lenten Series
A WORD FROM
PASTOR JULIE
2
(Climate Change & Creation Care) Continued from front page
March 6 – Kimberly Byrd, bioethicist and lecturer at the University
of Minnesota (the Initiative for Bioenergy and the Environment). She
will speak about the Pope’s Encyclical from a non-Catholic viewpoint.
March 13 – Julia Nerbonne, Director of Minnesota Interfaith Power
and Light. She will speak on how we, as individuals and as a congre-
gation, can care for creation in light of climate change.
We hope you’ll make time on your Sunday mornings as we engage in
this “life-long learning” series that is intended not to just be enlight-
ening and informative, but to stir us to awareness and action in our
own lives and as a community of faith.
Peace to you in these winter days,
Pastor Julie Ebbesen and the Series Planning Team

CARING FOR CREATION…
AT THE LIBRARY
Want to read more in connection with St. Peder's Caring for Crea-tion Lenten series? Check out our new acquisition, The Sixth Ex-tinction: An Unnatural History, by Elizabeth Kolbert. (We have 2 copies to circulate.) It won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction. With her engaging writing and the urgency of the subject, this is readable science at its best. For kids, we have Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, a story about ecology way ahead of its time. For more than 40 other titles in our library, go to:
librarything.com/catalog/stpeders Then click on All Collections, scroll down to and click on Creation/Nature/Science. We would like to expand our library's coverage of Caring for Crea-tion subjects. If you have a book to recommend (or donate), contact Jeanne Schleh -- The Library Committee

RECIPIENTS OF THIS YEAR’S OTTAR
JORGENSEN SERVICE AWARD…
Each year at the annual meeting we present the Ottar
Jorgensen Service Award to two households at St Peder’s in
thanksgiving for their faithful service to the ministry of this con-
gregation. This year, Sonya Clementson and Andrea Wollak will
share the award statue (it’s a smaller bronze version of Peter and
Jesus that adorns our entry) - and we are indeed thankful for
their work and presence at St Peder’s!

Annual Meeting Elections Held on January 24
If you weren’t able to attend our annual meeting, written reports are available on the table in the entry.
MEET OUR NEW COUNCIL PRESIDENT… Curt Petersen… (Curt will serve a two-year term, and is eligible to serve a second consecutive term.)
I have been coming to St Peder’s as a visitor, for youth events with friends, since I was young.
Meg and I joined officially in 2000 before we got married in 2001. I was on the Council from 2008 through
2011.I currently work as an independent bookkeeper for small businesses in the Twin Cities area.
(Curt and Meg also have a daughter, Alice, who is in 5th grade.)
MEET OUR NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS… Casey Clementson… (will serve a one year term, completing a 3-year term for a member who needed to re-
sign.)
I grew up at St. Peder's, having been a member for over 35 years, and have been mentored by many current and
former members of the congregation. Currently, I teach instrumental music in the Rosemount/Apple Valley/
Eagan school district and play flute in the Encore Wind Ensemble.
Melba Granlund… (will serve a 3-year term)
has been a member of St Peder's since 2007 and has served on the church council during the past year to fill out
a term of a prior council member. Melba is a church musician and prior to joining St. Peder's served as music
director of the former El Milagro Lutheran, and pianist, organist and choir director of St. Luke's Lutheran, Min-
neapolis, and American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, Minnesota. During that time, she also served on the
church councils for those congregations. Melba's hobbies include weaving and other fiber arts. Recently retired
after working as a paralegal for over 50 years, she currently teaches fiber art classes through the Textile Center,
weaving guilds, and at Bay Lake Camp Folkschool. She organized and leads the Fiber Arts Group at St. Ped-
er's. She enjoys travelling and has taken several trips to Scandinavia to study the rich textile history of those
countries.
Doreen Skraba…(will serve a 3-year term)
My husband John and I have been members at St Peder's for about 5 years. We have lived in the Longfellow
neighborhood for 31 years. I have been a life-long Lutheran. I am a Nurse Anesthetist and I am currently doing
part time freelance work after retiring from HCMC last summer. Since my job change I am enjoying having
more free time which allows me to do more traveling and when the weather cooperates bicycling and cross
country skiing. We have 2 daughters, Sofia lives in Los Angeles and Simone lives in North Minneapolis. I am
looking forward to serving on the church council at St Peder's.
Thank you to all who serve on St Peder’s Council! We are grateful for your lead-ership, faith, insight, and wisdom as we seek to serve God and neighbor.
Faith strengthening Doubt:
A Wednesday
Lenten Series Theatre is all about asking the big questions: Who are we? Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? And when it comes to issues of religion and faith, theatre asks even harder ques-tions: What is truth? Who can be trusted? How does religion help or harm? By asking the ques-tions of characters in tough situations, we also ask the questions of ourselves. In this Lenten series we’ll experience vignettes from plays that ask us these hard questions. We’ll wrestle with the role of doubt in a healthy faith life. Are there situation where doubt can bring us closer to our faith and to God? Can doubt be a healthy counterpoint to faith? Experience vignettes from :
W;t by Margaret Edson
Doubt by John Patrick Shanley
Son of a Gun by Shannon T.L. Kearns

A NOTE FROM SHANNON
We're into the dog days of winter now; a time when all seems gray
and dreary and when, unless you really love the outdoors, staying
inside seems like the best possible option. This year, with Lent
starting early, it makes sense that these dreary days coincide with
the reflection inspired by Lent. How will your family mark this Len-
ten time? Are there practices you can do together (whether it's giv-
ing something up or adding something in, a time of devotional
reading before bed, etc) to deepen your family faith practice? I en-
courage you to think of ways to make Lent a family activity; to do it
communally so as to deepen the experience for everyone involved.
If you need some ideas, let me know!
May you be blessed on your Lenten journey. Shannon Kearns Director of Faith Formation and Outreach
