What do you think of #OscarsSoWhite? Is it just the best movies getting the most accolades or is it a symptom of a much larger issue in society? Raquel Russell discusses the issues and lets students answer themselves.

Monsters of Schlock brought their weird and wacky comedic side show to the Progress Student Centre.

Morningside Campus welcomed students to Casino Night for a chance to win amazing prizes and play some fun games of chance.

Greg Laswell, a musician, producer and recording engineer. wants to tell students that they should never doubt their goals.

Vintage video games made a stop at all four campuses in January. Giving students a chance to play all their retro favourites like it's the 1990's.

Do you have a business idea that just needs some help getting off the ground? ACCEL is here to help with advice and mentorship.

B rooklyn is a historical drama that takes place during the 1950s. Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) is a young woman who has grown up in

the same Irish community for all of her life before she makes a trip to the United States to better her prospects and that of her family. Eilis leaves behind her elder sister and mum and travels to Brooklyn where she lives in an all-girls boarding home. She works a job and takes bookkeeping lessons all while getting to know the new and bustling world of America.

Eilis struggles with severe homesickness, but when she meets Tony (a Brooklynite of Italian descent) things begin to change. Eilis and Tony (Emory Cohen) grow close and she continues to build strong bonds with the women in her boarding home. When tragedy strikes in Ireland, Eilis must decide on what her future will look like and who she is.

Brooklyn is a charming film that doesn't let itself get too bogged down by what could be ‘tropey’ storylines. It's a romance. It's a coming of age story. It's about family and the family one must make for themselves when away from home. There are many moments of hilarity that don’t feel forced. Whenever the women are together around the table at the boarding home, make sure to pay attention to the dialogue – it’s quick and witty. Ronan captures the audience attention from the beginning and ensures that they are invested in Eilis’ story and of what happens around her.

Brooklyn is one of those movies that I think only comes around once in a while. It lasts for almost two hours, but in that time we get a well-rounded story that will make you cheer with the characters and groan when times are rough for them. There aren’t gimmicks to make you laugh – just organic chemistry that lights up the screen. The performances are strong and the pacing is solid, making it deserving of an Oscar nomination. It may not be a film addressing a giant social issue, but it’s a refreshingly sweet story that was appreciated by this audience member.

L ike most students across the country, Centennial College students are very busy across the campuses, working to succeed in their chosen fields. With policies of inclusion and opportunities for discussion, Centennial has been

part of making sure many voices are heard across the spectrum. The reality of not being heard and seeing a mainstream awards system

sideline important and moving roles was part of the inspiration for the wide use of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

April Reign (Twitter @ReignOfApril), an American editor, created the evocative hashtag in 2015 to speak to a lack of diversity in the nominations of last year. In 2016, many Twitter users were quick to take up the far-reaching tag when the nominations were released this year and no actors of colour were to be found in leading roles for Best Picture, Actor/Actress in a Leading Role and Actor/Actress in a Supporting Role. It was of particular grievance this year partly because there were notable films starring people of colour (i.e. Straight Outta Compton, Creed, Beasts of No Nation, etc.) that had worthy performances.

Sometimes social issues making waves on social media are not given the same attention outside of the Internet. Not everyone is plugged in all the time. Anna, a publishing student at the college wasn’t even aware of the conversation happening around the hashtag or on social media. When asked about a need for diversity in Hollywood she simply agreed that it was a good idea.

Kaitlyn Smith, a student at the Story Arts Campus, is very aware of the conversations that are happening about diversity in Hollywood.

“The Oscars is just a symptom of an entire problem,” she said. “Indian people, to be honest, we have Bollywood, we’ve got our own

thing going on there which is fine,” she said. Smith went on to share that there are some lessons that mainstream

Hollywood could take from Bollywood. She cited that Bollywood used to be made up of mainly Hindi movies.

“So just Hindu people and you had to be very light skinned,” she said. “(Now) you’ve got race relations and religious issues where people are talking about the Bangladeshi and Indian and Sri Lankan as well as the Tamil issues that are happening there.”

“I don’t see why that can’t be done with the Oscars or in the entertainment industry,” she said. “Why are you just allowing the celebration of one story instead of expanding past that?”

When asked if there were any Oscars movies she would see, Smith said she saw Inside Out and that it was adorable, but was also very candid about how and if she watches Oscars movies generally.

“I don’t always like to go to movies,” she said. “I like to watch my movies online for free. I might see them, but when I can’t identify with a character sometimes, and I think that’s a problem, I lose interest really easily.”

The Oscars will air on February 28, with Chris Rock as host.

G reg Laswell is out for revenge with his new album, Everyone Thinks I Dodged A Bullet, set for release on

March 4, 2016.As the title hints, this is a quintessential post-

breakup song collection. Laswell wrote, performed (except the cello parts), mixed and produced the entire recording on Vanguard Records. Lyric videos were pre-released for songs “Everyone Thinks I Dodged A Bullet” and “Lifetime Ago” in October and December 2015, and “Out of Line” in January 2016 on BlackBook. Evren Göknar, a Grammy award-winner who also produced for Iggy Pop, mastered the ten-track album, now available for pre-order via iTunes and Amazon.

“While ‘breakup’ songs are littered far and wide across the pop landscape, only a precious few can genuinely bond author and listener through a viscerally-shared sense of that particularly tortured experience," BlackBook said in a recent review of the album.

People love breakup songs and those with lost love on their minds will be singing along to the lyrics, “Everyone thinks I dodged a bullet / But I think I shot the gun.” No one would want these songs written about them and many will speculate as to who he’s singing about; but they don’t have to be suffering true heartbreak to enjoy the music.

“Laswell has a gift for appealing melodies that float and meander,” NPR Music (National Public Radio) said in their feature story on the artist.

When asked to give advice to Centennial College’s Music Industry Arts & Performance students, here’s what Laswell had to offer: "I always say that if you have a legitimate 'Plan B', do yourself a favour and skip to it... Sounds harsh, but it's true. You don't want it enough. Also, make sure you're good. Everyone thinks they're good. Get some people in your ear that you trust and will give you an honest opinion (not your mom, or roommate, and NEVER your girlfriend or boyfriend)."

Honest and heartfelt words, just like his lyrics.

C entennial College makes it hard for students not to enjoy coming to school.

There seems never to be a dull moment at any campus.January 28th was vintage video game day at the Story Arts Centre

cafeteria. Students had a chance to escape class and indulge in some Nintendo like it was 1988.

Cassius Washington-Smith, a first year journalism student, thinks the blast from the past was a great idea.

“This school is GOAT (greatest of all time) for this,” Washington-Smith said while posting a photo to Instagram.

CCSAI linked with Game On Entertainment Services (G.O.E.S) to make it

happen. G.O.E.S provides gaming entertainment for parties and events, be it private, public or corporate. A big shout out goes to them for bringing the good times to our campuses.

The students loved it!“It’s nostalgic – reminds me of when I was kid playing video games with

my Dad in the living room…it's awesome,” Washington-Smith added. There were a bunch of events at the SAC just like this to jump start

2016: Free pancake day, free hot chocolate day — an exhibition in the art gallery showcasing the works of student artists. Als a number of interactive workshops, ping-pong tournaments — the fun doesn’t end No wonder why Asher Roth loves college.

B usiness accelerator programs encouraging students to become engaged in entrepreneurial endeavours have been popping up in colleges all around the world.

For instance, during a class, you may have witnessed an information session on Centennial’s own accelerator appropriately named ACCEL (Accelerator for Centennial Community Entrepreneurs and Leaders) But if you’re anything like me, you steeped all that was said during this session in a pool of cynicism. It’s not our fault. We’ve constantly been bombarded with the “get rich” schemes of the internet. My personal favourite is the ad about some guy named Tod who quit his job, got rich and wears board shorts all day because he started his own business. No Tod, you may not have my credit card information.

ACCEL however is a provincially-funded business accelerator with offices at both Progress Campus and the Story Arts Centre. So perhaps ACCEL is worth a closer look. Don’t worry I did it for you.

First off, you don’t have to dive head first into the program. Instead, ACCEL offers a toe first approach for those of us who are new to the idea of starting our own business. Students are welcome to take advantage of the programming offered which include workshops on a variety of topics.

Secondly, these guys at ACCEL aren’t just a bunch of “Tods.” Not one person at ACCEL will tell you that starting a successful business is easy. In fact, those new to the program are assessed before any work is done. The manager of ACCEL, Donovan Dill, calls it a “triage system.” Those students who don’t have an idea for a business are put into the red stream. In this stream, coaches help students to understand how their skill set can be translated into a successful business. The yellow stream is where the student has developed an idea and is now able to sit down with a coach and fill out a business plan template. Those in the green stream have a completed business plan that may require some tweaking. Those who move on to graduation have a fully approved business plan and receive $2,500 in funding for their start up.

Thirdly, perhaps most importantly, the ACCEL program allows students to make a jump from the abstract to the concrete. This is especially helpful for those of us in programs that

Derek Chan owns “Ko Fung Martial Art” where he provides personal martial arts training directly to his clients in their homes. He says that ACCEL offered him great advice on how to expand his business.

Students Starting Strong

ACCEL helps students develop their business ideas and provides mentors to make them a reality.

aren’t traditionally associated with entrepreneurism. For instance, Donovan Dill spoke of a fine arts student who began selling her paintings. Dill explained that her biggest issue was that she failed to factor the time she spent on each piece into her price.

Sadly, this poor overworked painter isn’t alone. Vague, underdeveloped business ideas float uselessly in the brains of most college students. Perhaps it’s time we put them down on paper and see where they go. At the very least we can find out what our time is worth and start charging for it.

33 - ABOVE: The dead plant and

wintery backdrop made the choice pretty easy when deciding to make this photo black and white. This is part of a

greyscale winter series from 2015.

3 - Don't Be Afraid to Edit: Usually I don't alter my photos that much, I like to let them stand for themselves. But sometimes you get one that is perfect for some extra Photoshop work. Have fun with this - just don't forget to save copies.

1 - LEFT: This rose photo

was taken in the Walled

Gardens inside Dunvegan Castle in

Scotland on the Isle of Skye.

44 - It's All in the Technique:

Your camera is handy, use its tools to their fullest potential. This shot for example would not have been the same had I used a high f-stop instead. Using this to my advantage I singled out a prominent focal point and kept the background soft.

4 - ABOVE: Texture is also important; the stamen of the

Amaryllis flower contrasts the

smooth petals.

2 - Get a Different Perspective: Sometimes it takes more than an interesting subject to get the shot. Change your position or the angle of the camera - experiment.

2 - RIGHT: This shot of the

blue passion flower took two sets to capture.

Between lighting conditions and

getting that perfect angle, it proved to be troublesome..

1 - Look for the Patterns: Nature comes pre-equipped with interesting stuff to shoot, you don't need to look far to discover something photo-worthy. When searching though, try to take note of the patterns that naturally occur. Using these as focal points or accents can take your photographic compositions to a whole other level. Try to look at these patterns in different ways and think beyond the obvious.
