BRITAINS one and only Green MP, CarolineLucas, has taken over from Labour leaderJeremy Corbyn as chair of the ParliamentaryCampaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

And she wasted no time in stiffening thebackbone of the Labour leader who, she seemsto think, might fudge opposition to Trident,Britains outdated nuclear weapon by voting notto renew it, rather than scrap it altogether.

Under the headline A weapon-free Trident isuseless. Jeremy Corbyn must be brave, Lucaswrote in The Guardian last month: Its clearthat, as well as winning over a chunk of Torybackbenchers, we need Labour to stand strongon this issue.

It is with that in mind that I was sorry to hearthat my fellow anti-Trident campaigner, theLabour leader Jeremy Corbyn, is consideringthe renewal of Britains Trident-capablesubmarine fleet while saying he wouldntpurchase new warheads.

It seems clear to me that if we keep thesubmarines ready to be re-armed at someundisclosed point in the future, we

fundamentally undermine any decision not topurchase new warheads.

Lucas is the MP for Brighton Pavillion inSussex and is set to open the VegFestUK showin the town at the end of this month.

She was vice-chair of the Parliamentary CNDgroup before taking over from Corbyn, whoobviously feels such a high-profile controversialposition doesnt behove his new leadership role.

She continued: If we are truly committed toreducing the worldwide nuclear threat andfulfilling our obligations under the non-proliferation treaty, realdisarmament is ourduty.

Keeping our nuclearweapons capabilitysends a signal to therest of the world thatsecurity is dependent onbeing able to useweapons of massdestruction, and thusdrives proliferation.

Kate Hudson, generalsecretary of theCampaign for NuclearDisarmament (CND),said: Caroline has atrack record in opposingnuclear weapons that issecond to none.

She also has alongstanding com-mitment to CND and thecause of peace and weare delighted that shehas accepted theposition of chair ofParliamentary CND.

After passing stringent tests and filling in

detailed forms she can now proudly use the

Vegan Soc Partner symbol which means

delegates can be sure all ingredients used

on her course will be 100% vegan.

The full Veg Soc approved symbol

couldn't be granted because the society no

    longer accredits cooking courses.

Vronique a veggie since the mid-1990s

(quite a feat in veggie-unfriendly France)

said: "Its important that veganism is

    serious, trustworthy with solid grounding."

    In an e-mail Sally Murray-Fella, a

member of the Vegan Society's business

development team, says: "I wish you the

best of luck with your endeavour and

commend you on your support for the

    vegan cause."

    Veronique continued: "We have two

programmes. One with French and vegan

cooking and one with cooking only both with

Christophe Bolis a young French chef with

    lots of enthusiasm and imagination.

"And the French course is taught in

    Avignon in a French school.

"During the course, which is held on the

last two weeks of every month, we will talk

about vegetarianism and veganism and lots

of other things at every level of competence

    in the language."

And she added: "I have been vegetarian

for 20 years now in a country where one

could say meat is important to the culture.

"For me the most important reason is the

suffering of animals [and not to be part of

    that]."

EVER walked past a busy supermarketlate at night and languished at thethought of tons of perfectly good foodgoing to waste in the dumpsters.

Now a restaurant which opened last

week will make sure none of it ends up in

landfill sites but, instead, turns up as

delicious vegetarian meals on your plate.

Tiny Leaf, in its four-storey premises in

Westbourne Park Road, Notting Hill, bills

itself as zero waste and organic.

    general manager Jonathan Krauss

    (formerly of high-profile Marylebone

    restaurant Chiltern Firehouse) and Alice

    Gilsenan as marketing director.

    The mouthwatering menu typically

    includes dishes such as buckwheat

    pancake with blueberry compote, coconut

yoghurt and bee pollen; courgette with

hemp pesto, toasted almond, and rye wafer

    with butterbean ragu, tomatoes and

GETTING a better nights kip and

sleeping more deeply is the natu-

ral result when you cut back on

sugar and fatty foods and eat

more fibre, a study has revealed.

And not being able to get

enough shut-eye can lead to hy-

    pertension, diabetes and cardio-

    vascular disease, it is claimed.

    The startling report from the

    Columbia University in New York

was published in the Journal of

    Clinical Sleep Medicine last

    month. Principal investigator

    Marie-Pierre St-Onge told the

    well-respected journal: Our main

finding was that diet quality influ-

    enced sleep quality.

It was most surprising that a

single day of greater fat intake

    and lower fiber could influence

    sleep parameters," she said. The

study showed that people who ate

more fibre in their diets, which

    vegans and vegetarians do, spent

more time in deep, slow wave

    sleep. People who knocked back

lots of saturated fat had more

    shallow sleep and those who

drank lots of sugary drinks and

sweet snacks got up more often in

    the night.

    "This study emphasises the fact

that diet and sleep are interwoven

in the fabric of a healthy lifestyle,"

    American Academy of Sleep Med-

    icine president Dr. Nathaniel Wat-

son, who was not part of the

    study, told the journal.

"For optimal health it is impor-

tant to make lifestyle choices that

    promote healthy sleep, such as

    eating a nutritious diet."

    The study, using polysom-

    nography (see pic left), also

    found that subjects fell

    asleep faster after fixed

    meals lower in saturated fat

    and higher in protein.

It took them an average of

29 minutes to fall asleep after

    consuming foods and bever-

ages of their choice, but only

17 minutes to fall asleep after

    eating controlled meals.

THERE is no such thing ashumanitarian wars, there is no suchthing as humane killing.

Thats was the crystal clear message on

    the Vegetarian Muslim Societys website

    last month.

    The comments, from Raul Fernandez-

    Berriozabal, come as terrorists callously

slaughter hundreds of innocent victims in a

holy war; and vow to form a new caliphate

(so-called Islamic state) in the middle East.

Its atrocities in Paris last year left

    hundreds dead and sparked worldwide

protest spawning the Je suis press

freedom movement supported by this mag.

In todays world we have access to all

forms of nutritious and delicious foods that

do not require to kill a sentient being with

the same ability to feel pain as you or I,

    Berriozabal goes on to say.

q MEANWHILE The Muslim Observer has

withdrawn its complaint about People for the

Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and a

    website somewhat controversially called

    Islamic Concern.

The site claims Islam is a beautiful

religion which has always viewed animals

as a special part of Gods creation.

But it then unashamedly goes on to point

readers in the direction of articles with titles

such as Animal sacrifice or blood orgy?; Is

there such a thing as Halal foi gras?; and,

    Bear-baiting is un-Islamic.

Adi James of the TMO said his main

concern was that the site should say it is

sponsored by PETA, which it now does.

And he adds: We may disagree about the

    substantive issues relating to animal

treatment, but we no longer have ethical

    concerns about their website.

    Being

humanISHWAR PURI gives discourses and discussions basedon the beliefs and traditions surrounding an Indiancontemplative, meditative tradition known as Sant Mat.

He is the founder of the Institute for the Study of HumanAwareness (ISHA) and a teacher of spirituality in America.Known affectionately as Ishwar Ji, he has a devotedfollowing of souls of all ages and backgrounds.

He took time out of a busy schedule recently to givean interview to Stephen Ward. This is the first of anumber of parts of the whole, highly idiosyncratic, conversation. The others will appear in subsequent issues.[Guru] Charan Singh (one of the Sant Mat masters based in thePunjab in India) used to say that we should tell people we werevegetarian because we didnt want to kill. Can you comment on that?

There are two things about being a vegetarian. One is spiritual and the

other is intellectual. The spiritual answer would be that if we are going to

get something so wonderful as an escape from this world and go to our true

home in sach khand (true home) and the master says: Can you do this

    for me?

Can you do a small thing for me? And we cannot do it. That meanswe are not very serious. Supposing you love somebody. He is abeloved of yours in this world. And the beloved says: Can youbring a book for me from the library? You will run for it to please the

beloved. Just to please the beloved you will do anything.

So the spiritual answer is; if a perfect living master is saying: Canyou do this for me, be a vegetarian? And if you say: I have aproblem [with that]. What kind of regard do you have for yourmaster; what kind of regard do you have for your path?

The intellectual answer is: If you want to meditate seriously there is

concentration of attention at the third eye centre the concentration of

    Left: Lights

    of Heaven -

    The

    Northern

    Lights have

    been

    compared

    with skies

    of the astral

    plane.

    Meet us atVegFestUK

    BrightonFebruary27th/28th

attention is affected depending upon what kind

of life you extinguish. If you kill a man and you

want to concentrate your attention, its very

difficult for several days. If you kill an animal it

is still there but much less. If you eat a

vegetable even then you have killed something

but the effect is much less because of the

degree of life in a vegetable.

So since meditation requiresconcentration of attention and killinganything, including an animal, affectsyour power to concentrate therefore it [killing an

animal] is not good for meditation.

Thats why the masters have all said be

vegetarian because then you can survive by

extinguishing life only of the lowest order.

If youre a vegetarian but you dont knowanything about spirituality might you beheaded in that direction? Might that be thenext step for you, spirituality, if youre avery strict vegetarian, but you dont knowabout it yet?

No, not at all. Being vegetarian doesnot make you spiritual. There are a lotof vegetarians who are totally notspiritual. Just being vegetarian does not make

you spiritual. It has to be much more than that.

The diet itself does not make

    you spiritual.

Some people are carrying it so

far. For example, in Japan I

found sects there who say that

eating a certain kind of rice

makes you spiritual, that its the

rice itself which takes you to a

    higher state.

So, you see, these kindsof things have beenpropagated becausethe diet itself is not important in

    making you spiritual.

It is only if you are spiritual

    that the diet matters.

There are people who arevegetarians to save theplanet. What is your view of thosepeople? If any of those people became

spiritual it would be an added

    advantage.

    They wont have to switch

from one type of diet to another.

    Theyd already be vegetarian.

That would be helpful to them.

People ask me very often; if god is a lovinggod why is there so much evil in the world?Do you have an answer for that?

The god which we are trying to worshipand the god we talk about who is aloving god is not the creative power. Itsa god that has been set up as an opposite to a

satan or a devil. This duality between a good

god and a satan which is there in all religions

has been set up by the creative power in order

to experience duality. The ultimate creative

power is not the god you worship. The gods

that we worship are of the astral plane. The

gods who sit somewhere on a throne these

are the kinds of gods we worship. The creative

power is beyond duality, beyond good and evil.

You were initiated by Sawan Singh. Can youtell me a bit about him?Sawan Singh was the greatest master. I had

such a great experience with him. I had the

opportunity to spend a lot of time with him. He

was an ordinary human being living an ordinary

human life but like all perfect living masters his

awareness was total. When he shared his

[spiritual] awareness you could see it was total.

But as a human being he lived an ordinarylife, like any other human being. I wasinitiated very young. I was nine years anda few months old. My grandfather had taken me to

get half initiation. He [the master] used to give

young children [half initiation], which means he

taught them how to listen to the sound inside. It

was easy for the little kids to hear the sound. But

he would not give them the repetition of the simran

    (mantra).

Later on they would come back to him forthe second half of the initiation. Then hewould give them simran (mantra). Thosewho were already teenagers or older he would

give them half the initiation of simran (mantra)Cont on p.10

only and give them dhun or bhajan

    (listening for/to inner sound) afterwards.

My grandfather was an initiate ofhis. He took me for half-initiation. But the great master caught me by the

arm and asked me what kind of initiation I

wanted. What kind of nam do you want,

    sweet or salted?

I knew that other kids would have said

    sweet.

I said: I want the initiation that is insidemy head. Then he kept holding myarm and later took me inside and said:You will get full initiation.

So thats how, on the 9th March, 1937,

    I got initiated.

When a product is deemed unfit for sale two

    steps are taken.

It is immediately withdrawn from supermarket

shelves and future sales are banned.

It is also recalled where customers are asked to

check their shelves to see if they have any awaiting

use or being used on their tables and urged to

return them to the stores where they were bought

    immediately.

This is usually done with notices displayed in

IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME, JUST WATCH A FLICK of the wrist, a break of the

knee even sitting at the hair-

dresser in curlers - this music video

breaks new ground for Bruno Mars!

Mars comes across here as a

hip-hop wide boy, rather than a

    star-crossed or besotted lover.

At just under 55 (1.65m) Bruno

    comes in short; shorter than

    paparazzi nightmare, Justin

    Beeber 57 (1.75m) and shorter,

even, than the female competition -

    Taylor Swift is a giant 58 (1.78m).

But none of that takes anything

    away from this pint-sized star.

Hes sex on legs - and he knows

it! - hes so pretty hes gotta kiss

    himself.

    Half Puerto Rican and half

Ashkenazi Jew - teaming up with

    the formerly frum Mark Ronson

probably made a lot of sense.

Born and raised in Honolulu, he

was making music at a young age.

Now 30, Bruno has sold over

    100 million singles and albums.

    4

    THIS IS an enchanting

    trilogy telling the story of

    a poor serf Gaston, who

    wants to become a

    knight, but it helps if

    youre in the know on

    this one.

    Gaston is the adopted

    son of a childless couple,

    incredibly poor and

    somehow he manages to

    become a knight, but not

    the sort he envisaged.

    Surprisingly, through a

    series of uncanny

    happenstances, he is

    sucked into an

    alternative path to the

    one he thought he

    wanted - he becomes a

    knight on the path of

    spirituality.

    He starts to move in

    circles where he

encounters royalty, fighting armies, the dark

force of evil and much more.

Having saved the life of a dwarf, he earns

unquestioning loyalty from the man he saved -

a companion who sticks by his side, no matter

    what.

The story unfolds in a classic fairytale style,

but what is different is the reader is led through

beautiful descriptions of the road to mysticism

    and god realisation.

Through the stories of Gaston, Ixthia and

Roland, the author educates us about the way

of the Lord Magician (guru/master), how to be

non-judgemental, submit to what life throws at

us, be disciplined, meditate and follow a strict

    vegetarian and moral lifestyle.

I really found it an enjoyable read, especially

the first two parts of the trilogy, but I did wonder

what readers who were not receptive to

spirituality or had no prior knowledge, would

    make of it.

In some ways, as a disciple of a similar

spiritual path for which meditation is the

cornerstone, this book uplifted and encouraged

    me.

However if I had different belief systems I

may not have found this work so engaging.

  • FRIENDLY COMMENTWe were all

Cranks onceONCE upon a time, in a land far, far

    away . . .

It certainly seems like that now. Im

talking about the blossoming of a

    revolution.

It wasnt the first time. That was in the

    love generation, when organic,

    vegetarian and veganism bubbled up

    from the underground.

No. Im talking about the second time,

around ten or so years later when

    vegetarianism again became

    fashionable.

    Yes, it was fashionable then.

There was a Cranks (we didnt mind

admitting it) sprouting on every street

corner, it seemed you could even find

them in West End stores, fashionable

ones! Cranks had blossomed from the

60s when the first outlet opened up in

    Carnaby Street.

The food, delicious as it was, came in

large school-canteen type tins and was

served out for you as you moved up the

    counter. I particularly remember the

huge cheese scones which you helped

yourself to on the way to the cash till.

    Vegetarianism isnt new. Like

teenagers and sex it hasnt only just

been discovered it. It has a tradition and

a history which goes back decades.

Find a Cranks recipe, via our

Rosemary, on page 3. And visit their

    website here for more.

    Donald might

just trump it. . . . and then where would we be?

WE first heard of Donald Trump here in

the UK way back in July 2012 when he

opened up his 1bn golf course in

    Aberdeenshire despite protests.

    Now Trump International Golf Links,

Scotland is flourishing. With a string of

top awards, a five star hotel and some of

the best golfing turf in Europe if not the

world it is easily a top golfing destination.

    Mr Trump triumphs!

    How does he do it?

He finds out what people want, some

of which chimes with his own reactionary

tastes and like any good businessman,

    he gives it to them.

Trouble is, the same recipe can work

in politics. And as front runner for the

    Republican nomination for President of

the United States doesnt he just know it.

    The tolerant, open-minded,

    egalitarian, libertarian, fraternal section

of society who dont always put their

    needs first arent natural winners.

Their version of fair-play is difficult to

    sell - ask Barack.

With a wall between Mexico and the

USA that would have put Berlin to

shame, guns flooding into a country with

more gun crime than anywhere else in

the world and a ban on Muslims - thats

ANY Muslims - (just imagine that) being

allowed in, the dangers of a Trump

victory are too horrific to contemplate.

So come on Democrats Abroad - of

which we know there are plenty - get off

your asses and please do your electoral

duty. If you dont speak up we could ALL

    end up in the bunker!

Bon apptit THE sunshine awaits, the history is ripe

for discovery and the cuisine . . . is

    perfectly vegan!!
