MEN’S BASKETBALL STUNS UNDEFEATED No. 3 SOUTHERN IDAHO / Pg. 4

On Friday, February 13, NIC will host the NJCAA West District tournament, in pursuit of their 15th National Championship.

The Cardinals have been ranked No. 1 or 2 most of the season, but despite finishing the regular season with a 16-2 record and eight consecutive duals wins, the Cardinals are ranked No. 3 heading into post season.

The West District wrestling tournament will be an excellent preparation for the na-

tional tournament, as every team in the tour-nament is ranked in the top 20. The Cardinals tuned up for the tournament by defeating No. 1 ranked Clackamas CC, and last year’s runner-up Northwest College in the last month of the regular season. Earlier in the schedule the Car-dinals also defeated defending champion, No. 2 ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, with all three wins coming on the road.

dients for the making of another national ti-tle run, with nine wrestlers ranked in the ten weight classifications. Freshman Dajour Re-ece, ranked No. 1 at 165, heads the list, joined by returning All-Americans Micheal Nguyen (No. 2 ranked- 125 lbs), and Taylor Kornoely (No. 2 ranked heavyweight).

Last season, NIC’s VJ Giulio earned the program’s sixth Most Outstanding Wrestler Award, but team goals inspire these Cardinals! The rich tradition of excellence includes 14 national titles, 53 individual national titles, and 219 All-Americans, all NJCAA records.

With a track record like that, only the legiti-mate pursuit and attainment of a National Title means Mission Complete!

Don’t miss the action at Christianson Gym-nasium on Friday the 13th.

The North Idaho College Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, committed to providing financial support to all recognized intercol-legiate athletic programs at NIC through various fund-raising and endowment activities for student athlete grant-in-aid and team ben-efits. Organized in the 1960s, the

Booster Club supports all NIC rec-ognized intercollegiate athletics as a lifelong learning experience that will enhance the value of sportsmanship and provide a positive experience for student athletes, students, and fans. The club also recognizes the commit-ment our athletes make to the young people of our community through

our athletic Cardinal Kids outreach programs. The Booster Club holds various fund-raising events through-out the year including an annual auction, awards banquet, 3-on-3 bas-ketball tournament, and golf tourna-ments. It also co-sponsors the Coeur d’Alene Crossing and operates a concession stand at all home events.

The midyear report is in print. The grades are in for your Cardinals and we are prepared to approach post season for the winter sports with high expec-tations. The Wrestling team heads into the District tournament with lofty goals (see cover story), and both basketball teams appear to be getting healthy at just the right time. It took two attempts for student to beat teacher, but Head Basket-ball Coach Corey Symons has shown he is learning quickly. Symons led the Cardinals to a spirited win over former NIC Coach Jared Phay and in-state rival College of Southern Ida-ho Golden Eagles. With the road win the Cardinals ended CSI’s win streak at 25, and knocked them from the ranks of the unbeaten. Both the men and women basketball teams are positioning for seeding in the upcoming Region 18 tournament, hosted by Utah State University - Eastern, in Price, Utah. If you can’t make it down to Price, Febru-ary 26-28, you can watch all of the NIC games at www.nic.edu/athletics. This year both the men and women’s region tourna-ment champion will receive an automatic bid to the NJCAA national tournament in Kansas, with the women’s regular season champion also assured of a tournament bid. Don’t miss the tournament action. The conference has proven to be the most balanced in recent history.

The Academic Honors are in, and your Cardinal student-athletes have earned 62 honorees on the Athletic Department Honor Roll. To earn a spot on the honor roll, athletes must attain a minimum GPA of 3.0 cumulative or for the 2014 Fall semes-ter. Special congratulation goes out to Women’s

Tradition of Excellence

WRESTLINGNIC Wrestling goes 4-0 in matches af-

ter returning from winter break. Currently ranked No. 3 in nation.

NIC vs. University of Great FallsIn their first match back in action since

Christmas break the Cardinals outlasted Uni-versity of Great Falls 24-18.

NIC traveled to Missoula, MT to take on University of Great Falls ranked No. 3 in NAIA. Sparked by pins from 149 Tyler Booth and 165 Kit Major NIC came away with a win. This pushed NIC re-cord to 9-2.

NIC vs. HighlineThe Cadinals 10-2

after they came away with a 44-6 win over Highline College of Des Moines, WA. All the NIC wrestlers looked good after their 6 hour bus ride.

The only loss of the dual meet came at 133.

NIC vs Southwest OregonThe following night NIC defeated South-

west Oregon 32-18. This pushed NIC’s re-cord to 11-2.

NIC vs ClackamasNo. 2 NIC traveled to Clackamas Oregon

to take on No. 1 Clackmas College. In their first meeting in mid December

NIC was ranked No. 1 and Clackamas was ranked No. 2. Clackamas came away with the victory and with it took the No. 1 rankig in the nation.

On Saturday night it was NIC’s turn to try and return the favor. The match did not dis-appoint. NIC was able to turn around a few matches from earlier in the year.

The match came down to the last match of the night. After regulation the two HWT wrestlers were tied. At the end of the first overtime period the two were still tied. In double overtime NIC’s Tayor Kornoly scored the winning takedown and secured NIC’s 21-16 win bringng their record to 12-2 thus handing Clackamas their first loss of the year.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThe NIC women’s basketball team (16-10,

4-7) has found itself mixed in the middle of perhaps the toughest Scenic West Athletic Conference in the past decade. With most of the teams beating each other on any given night, the fight for a trip to nationals is within almost anyone’s reach. Salt Lake Community College has emerged as the clear favorite al-though they lost to Snow College who lost to North Idaho and Southern Idaho. USU-Eastern has managed to pull off wins against NIC and CSI but hasn’t been able to against Snow and SLCC. The third round of the SWAC is now underway as the teams vie for playoff positioning. Despite our conference record we are only 3 games out of second place. Be sure to check out our home schedule and catch the webcast of our away games at nicathletics.com.

Sophomore Kara Staggs is averaging 18.2 points per game, which leads the SWAC in conference scoring. She is also averaging 2.6 assists per game and is shooting 84% from the free throw line. Kara was named the SWAC Player of the Week after our Snow and SLCC road trip the second week of Janu-ary. Against SLCC she had 24 points shoot-ing 50% FG. Two nights later, she scored 32 points in our OT victory against Snow. She was 5-10 from the 3 point line and 11-13 for free throws. She also had 4 assists. Freshman Monica Landdeck is averaging 13.3 points/game in the SWAC. She is also pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game from the guard posi-

tion. Monica was named the SWAC Player of the Week after our 31 point home victory over CSI on January 17. She had 29 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Redshirt Freshman Mariah Swanson is averaging 11.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

We are extremely proud to announce that the team finished the fall 2014 semester with a 3.46 combined team GPA! Great job ladies! Six of our eight sophomores will graduate in the spring with our final two on track to grad-uate after they finish summer school. Fresh-man Maci Benedict earned a perfect 4.0 in his first semester at college while sophomore Bailey Schroeder has a 3.9 cumulative GPA after three semesters.

For constant updates on the NIC women’s basketball team, be sure to follow us on Twitter at @NICWBBALL and Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/NorthIdahoCol-legeWomensBasketball.

MEN’S BASKETBALLThe Cardinals realize that to compete in

the SWAC you have to at least split on the road, and defend your home court. After starting the season 2-3 on the road for the first five games, the Cardinals men’s basket-ball team has since gone 4-2 in league play. The biggest win came in the final regular season match-up against instate rival College of Southern Idaho, coached by former NIC head coach Jared Phay. The Car-dinals (19-6 overall, 6-5 SWAC) knocked off previously unde-feated and #3 ranked CSI on their home floor on February 7th. The win avenged two previous losses to the conference leading Golden Eagles. In the first conference games at home the Cards protected home court for two great wins to get back on track in the SWAC. NIC defeated USU-Eastern in a thrilling 70-64 win, a game in the Cardinals led most of the contest only to have the lead taken late in the second half. Down by 6 points with fewer than 2 minutes, the Cardinals press forced 3 straight turn-overs, which allowed them to take the lead

for good. The team was led by two freshmen: Braian Angola had 22pts, and Kyle Guice added 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the fol-lowing game against Colorado Northwestern, the team came out hot and played well to-gether, with a season high 26 assists. NIC led at halftime 50-28, and the second half looked similar to the first, as the Cardinals pulled off a 106-62 victory. All Cardinals scored, but they were led by Jamaal Robateau’s 10/11 shooting and game high 28 points. The Car-dinals won a third straight game at home against Snow College 76-60, avenging a tough lost on the road in Ephraim in the final seconds. Robateau again led the way with 20 points, with Austin Pope chipping in with 17 points and 4 assists. In a cold shooting team effort the Cards lost a disappointing home match to second place Salt Lake CC, 69-55 to end the second round of conference play. The team will be in action for the final two home games of the season this week against Utah State University-Eastern on Thursday, and sophomore night is February 14 against Colorado Northwestern CC in the regular season home finale. The Region tournament will be at USU-Eastern in Price, UT, begin-ning February 26-28. Tune in for all games at www.nic.edu/athletics.

GOLFThe Men’s and Women’s golf teams are

currently in their off season, but are stay-ing sharp and working on their game by practicing individually indoors at Avondale G.C. The Cardinals first official team prac-tice will start on March 1st in preparation

for their first tourna-ment on April 19th and 20th, which they are hosting at Avon-dale G.C. They will play an additional two tournaments this spring to gear up for the NWAC Golf Championships, in Lakewood, WA on May 17th and 18th.

The weather outlook bodes well this spring for the golf season, with higher than average temperatures and lower than average pre-cipitation forecasted. The men’s team is also

excited to add Adam Power to the roster this spring. Adam, a Canadian native, was a pre-vious member of the Spokane Cheifs hockey team.

SOFTBALLAs the team returns from break we are fo-

cusing on the classroom during the first few weeks of the semes-ter. We are also have started individual training in prepara-tion for the season with pitching and hitting workouts. We will start offi-cial team practices in February with our first games at the NWAC pre-season tournament in Rich-

land, WA on February 28th. Our first home game will be March 27th vs. CBCC.

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s Soccer is working hard in the off-

season. For the time being, the men are working out and playing in the gym every opportunity they have. The team wants to

congratulate Tony Quesnell on earning a 4.0 first semes-ter. Tony is a fresh-man midfielder from Moscow.

Over the last two weeks of January, the program is host-ing nine recruits with a few more coming in February. The men expect to return

twelve to fourteen guys for 2015 and hope to have recruiting wrapped up by the end of March. The key to success on the recruiting trail will be finding some goalscorers. While several freshmen can be counted on to in-crease their contribution for 2015, out of the program’s 56 goals in 2014, 37 of those goals came from Adam Talley, Alec Johnson, and Brady Ulen. Alec Johnson has already trans-ferred to Gonzaga where he is on the team. Alec is NIC Men’s Soccer’s first D1 transfer

in several years. Adam Talley has commit-ted to Western Washington University, and Brady Ulen is weighing his options between Seattle University and WWU.

WOMEN’S SOCCEREven though there’s not much happening

on the “pitch” during these winter months, it doesn’t mean the Women’s Soccer Program isn’t busy. The NWAC only allows 6 weeks of practice starting in April and so our actual

training time in the spring is reduced. So ladies are back in school focusing on improving their grades and getting stronger. Many of them will be taking some of their tougher classes in the spring since we won’t be missing classes for

games. They’ll also be doing Assistant Coach Becky Thompson’s version of Insanity, it is not for the faint of heart!

Recruiting has also been very active. While I have missed on a couple of local players who wanted to get away from home, two starting forwards, Meg Lowery and Alis-sa Jolliff, from the 2-time State Cup Champi-on Coeur d’Alene Sting ’96 have committed to attend NIC! From the same team, holding – midfielder Bailey Burgin has also com-mitted. Post Falls natives Jessica Scott and Lexi Smith, a transfer from Eastern Oregon University, have accepted our offer to be part of the 2015 NIC team. Along with those five is Haley Spooner an attacking player from 2-time Washington State High School Cham-pion, Central Valley. It’s a good start for the class of 2015!

VOLLEYBALLThe volleyball girls are starting back up

with spring ball here in February. After a long break from volleyball they

are excited and determined to get back in the gym. We will have a full month of individu-als and then jump right into team practices in March.

We have our annual spring tournament at Gonzaga the end of March and then wrap

up our final scrimmage at Lewiston against Lewis Clark State College.

We are happy to welcome two new girls to our program already this spring, Penny Gwynn from Hamil-ton, Montana.

Penny is a standout outside hitter for her high school, she signed with Salt Lake Community College last fall and decided it wasn’t a good fit for her and transferred to us. We are

excited to have Penny, she is a very talented athlete who has a lot of po-tential to do good things for us this coming fall. We also brought in Han-nah Christianson from Grass Valley, California. Hannah is another trans-fer from University of Hawaii. Han-nah was walk on at Hawaii when she decided to take a semester off from volleyball it did last long before she got bored and missed the sport and

decided to come join our team. Han-nah will be our upcoming Libero for 2015. She has a hard working de-meanor on the court and an outgoing personality.

As far as recruiting I am very hap-py with how things have been going. We have had 3 girls sign already and many others that have been offered; now we wait!

Go Cardinals!
