February 2nd Bell Ringer: USE BLUE SHEET FROM LAST WEEKWhat is the relationship between carrying capacity and population growth?

*Staple ch 8.1/8.2 GR & study cards together. Grab a RED grading pen.

Objectives:1. Review ch 8.1 and 8.2 GR *Study Cards DUE2. Review Diagnostic3. Complete video/review questions4. 8.3 GR *For Question #10: Using the purple portion of the graph

to answer.

Chapter 8.1 GR

1 pt EACH = 10 points1. Increased population because nutritional needs

were met more easily this resulted in people living longer and children surviving into adulthood.

2. People began trading and purchasing food from others because they now had free time, people pursued trades and crafts.

Real Data Box p23011. a. Hungary 14. India b. China c. US 15. 3.14 million d. India e. Madagascar

12. Madagascar

13. Decreasing (declining) = negative growth rate

Chapter 8.2 GR1 pt EACH = 12 points

1. C2. D3. Fertility rates are dropping, but the overall

human population is increasing.4. They help demographers predict how a

population might change.5. Some regions might have more females than

males because males migrate to find work; some regions might have more males than females because males are valued higher, with a resulting decrease in the quality of care for females.

6. China’s age structure graph would likely look more like Canada’s because China’s growth rate has slowed.

7. Transitional

8. a. Pre-Industrial b. Transitional c. Industrial d. Post-Industrial

9. Post-Industrial

10. higher; lower

11. Growing

12. Decline

Quick Lab p237

1. Hispanic or Latino – the shape of the age structure graph indicates greater projected growth.

2. Yes; by comparing the proportion of reproduction age women and the number of children in each age structure diagram, you could compare the total fertility rates of two populations.

3. Hispanic/Latino – 39% White – 25%Indicates that the Hispanic/Latino population should grow at a higher rate.

Ch 9.4 GR

1. Tectonic plates2. Liquefy3. Landslide4. Tsunami5. Alaska and California6. Tectonic plates scrape against each other as they

float on hot, soft rock. Sometimes the plates get stuck on each other and stress builds up. When plates finally move, energy is released, which causes the surface to shake, creating an earthquake.

7. True8. Drop9. True

10. Molten rock may seep out of the volcanic opening or explode out onto Earth’s surface. When rock cools, it hardens to create a new layer of rock.

11. Scientists can monitor volcanoes and try to predict when a volcano will erupt. If scientists can predict an eruption in time to send out a warning, people can evacuate before the eruption.

12. B13. A14. C15. D16. Most people who die in a tornado are struck by flying objects. Indoors: basement/low area, Outdoors: ditch/low spot laying face down Vehicle/Mobile home: seek shelter in a sturdy building

17. Because it hit NO with 201 km/hr winds and at least 8m storm surge. These powerful forces caused the levee system to break, so the city flooded.

18. Secure your home before the hurricane hits and evacuate if the authorities tell you to.

19. Avalanches usually occur on steep slopes when there is a layer of hard, strong snow over a layer of soft, weak snow. This makes an unstable snowpack. If the soft layer gives, the snow breaks apart and slides down the slope. Weather conditions such as a heavy snowfall or warm temperatures also influence when an avalanche occurs.

20. Avoid risky slopes as much as possible; if caught in an avalanche, try to stay near the surface and attempt to swim up through the sliding snow; stay calm and conserve air

21. Pressure from contact of tectonic plates is released into the crust. 22. Strong shaking forces can destroy structures and harm people. 23. Take cover under something sturdy, away from windows.

24. Molten rock, ash, and gases are ejected from inside Earth. 25. Cover large areas of land, trigger mudflows and landslides, create large ash clouds.26. Stay ready to evacuate if an eruption is likely.

27. High winds create storm conditions on the surface.28. Strong winds, rain, hail, and lightning may cause damage. 29. Seek shelter or evacuate if possible.

30. An unstable snowpack slides down a slope. 31. The snow can bury people and structures. 32. Avoid risky slopes. If caught, try to stay near the surface.

The Rise and Fall –and Rise?- of DDT

1. The nations with active malaria tend to be in the center of Africa; the nations with little or no malaria activity are in the north and south.

2. They are very similar in pattern.

3. The map on climate shows that the central areas that currently have problems with malaria tend to be wetter and more tropical. The parts of the continent that do not experience malaria tend to be dry.

4. It is likely that the mosquito lifecycle is connected to climate conditions. Mosquitoes prefer wet climates in which to live and breed.

5. Some locations in Africa have a climate that is more conducive to malaria, while others are less conducive. This affects the risk and probability of contracting malaria and decisions regarding pesticide use.
