President’s Report: Welcome to the

December meeting, the last for 2014 and

another year almost finished. It certainly has

been a busy one for the STHARC committee

and members alike. The Events Committee

had a meeting this evening to compile an

events calendar for the first 6 months of

2015; will also be a full & interesting period.

Thank you to our editor for another excellent

issue of The Wheel with some great articles

and photographs. Now with our full colour

magazine, and enthusiastic editor, photos

that accompany articles enhance each issue,

so keep those reports, photos and any stories

rolling in. Thank you to all who contributed

to the December issue.

A reminder that the end of year function will

be held on the 14th Dec at the Sutton Hall,

please contact Hazel with numbers; we still

have some STHARC calendars for members

to purchase on the day, only $10 ea.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable festive

season and remember to travel safely and

have a rest break every 2 hours on extended

road trips and I hope to see you all at the

Presidents run, & January meeting, at the

Canberra Yacht Club on Sun 18 January

2015 at 4pm. The club extends its

condolences to Brian Thomas whose

Property Officer’s Report: Usual items

Registrar: Vespa Motor Scooter

Editor’s Report: My apologies I will miss

the Dec meeting as I will be working in

Indonesia. Dec Wheel technically and

artistically about the best I can do. Many

contributors, 2 from outside club with photos

so a full 32 pages. Thanks to all. A difficult

edition to produce as John Winnett’s funeral

report had to go in with Christmas items, sad

and happy things to report. Next newsletter

will be Feb, and have a template formed

already. Just a request for reports and photos

to come in as soon after the event as possible

as I try to do them as I get them; it takes

about 1-2 hours to do a 2 page spread so too

much to leave until the 20th each month, but

I will always give preference to club

minutes, events and reports.

Finally have literally 100s of photos to

choose from, sometimes it’s coin toss which

goes in. Really need to post these on web.

My suggestion that we can do this on the

club page now on Shannons/ Members

present commended the quality of the

magazine. Those of us with diminishing

eyesight noted that some of the small print

needed to pack so much into the newsletter is

challenging as is some of the watermarking

background. Editor is to be asked to look at

these issues noting that watermarking is not

likely to have been an easily identified issue

on the computer scene during preparation.

(Noted and will do, apologies ed)

Council Reports: ACT Council CAMC

has established a connection with Federal

Parliamentarians through a group called

something like Parliamentary Friends of

Motoring. An email was sent out to

members about the display which took place

this morning. Report was that the event was

complicated by the number of cars attending

and a bit disorganized but was well attended.

One attendee admitted to a firstborn being

conceived in the back seat of a Chrysler

Royal similar to our member’s vehicle but it

wasn’t our member’s car.

A breakaway group from the AHMF has

been formed to cater for the interest of

modified vehicle owners and their desire for

some form of concessional registration in

NSW. CAMC is planning to use its

previously established position of supporting

this separate type of registration, to support

the breakaway group but only on the basis

that the current historic registration

arrangements are in no way interfered with.

The recently imposed levy on ACT historic

vehicles has been the subject of negotiations

with ACT Government. It is hoped that the

levy will be modified. CAMC is seeking

immediate action. The hoped for outcome is

a worst case of pro rata levy which would

amount to about $3.40 as opposed the $34 as

it stands.

Consideration is being given to running a

car event at EPIC at Easter.

Terribly British Day is on 7 December at

Patrick White Lawns and NCDC insists on

drip trays. A cardboard beer carton unfolded

will do. STHARC site is the same as in past

years when PWL was used for the event.

Misuse of vehicles on historic plates has

been the subject of ongoing action. There

are currently more than 1100 vehicles on

historic plates in the ACT. One instance has

resulted in the owner agreeing to remove the

vehicle from historic registration.

Arrangements in relation to hire and reward

activities are well known and are not

permitted for historic vehicles. At the

request of ACT RTA, any questions relating

to standards are to be submitted to CAMC

and not direct to RTA.

Marques in the Park success with estimated

500 vehicles on the site during the day.

About 400 were present at the peak. Lions

club managed to raise $640 on the day.

Cars ‘n’ Coffee by Shannons will be held at

Fyshwick premises 22 Yallourn Street

Club members were encouraged to support

the event.

A terrific turnout considering that

at one stage it appeared there

was no interest. The thought was that the

lack of accommodation would turn

people away but 13 members and 7

classic cars made the journey, some for

just the day but others overnighting with

friends in Young or at Cowra.

But the weather had been stormy all

week and the rains came down.

And down.

AND DOWN.

James did a tyre on Bonnie deciding, and John and Ronda got a jump start for the Benz on account of a battery issue. Somewhere along the way in country NSW the convoy found an oulet that had one last tyre to fit Bonnie, and one battery in stock to fit the Benz!

That was luckyThat was luckyThat was lucky...

Pauline and Albert headed up on Friday night, enjoying a lovely Chinese dinner, with dinner at the hotel restaurant the next night. Photograph shows there was time for the STHARC group to relax and have a soft drink.

Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 7

John K was mightly impressed with a huge aero engine, started up in public with spinning shaft - lots of OH&S around that (below)! Time for the parade which was held late

afternoon. It had been raining all day and most cars had left by then, but the rain suddenly stopped so STHARC managed to put on a good display led out by a Dennis fire engine. Albert scored best club car, and Pauline lifted the Kincrome tool chest and matching esky.

Happy days.Happy days.Happy days.

All departed after the

parade when it started

to rain again, but all

arrived home safely, bit damp but all

spoken to agreed it was a great outing

and everyone thoroughly enjoyed

themselves .

STHARC Display Site, Queanbeyan Swap Meet, STHARC Display Site, Queanbeyan Swap Meet,

Big 3 Cars, & American Car NatsBig 3 Cars, & American Car Nats

Sat/Sun 22-23 November 2014

by Allan Boyd and Chris Hillbrick-Boyd

A good attendance on a hot Saturday when STHARC had a stand set up by the main public entrance at Queanbeyan Showgrounds. And 6 members attended

on the Sunday with 8 cars when temperatures soared to more than 37oC. Some

traders were disappointed as the heat kept a lot of entrants in shade; if they could find it.

Months before the Swap, Allan organised to book two Swap Meet sites on behalf of

STHARC at the Queanbeyan

Showground. Allan raided

the STHARC storeroom at

the Guides Hall for banners.

gazebos, STHARC photo

books etc for the Swap Meet

sites early in the week prior

to the Swap. Despite the

heat on Friday afternoon we

took our packed “Green

Dragon” (VW Caravelle) to

the Showground and left it

there on our sites for the

following morning. As with

most other site holders, we

were up at the crack of dawn, dressed and after quickly gulping down a morning

cuppa and then headed for the

Showground and the STHARC sites.

Allan arrived first on his newly restored

BSA and with some help put up our

gazebo. Then President Malcolm

arrived and he and Allan put up the two

STHARC gazebos. Tables were put up

and information spread out. The

second site was for members to sell

some of their own wares as well as

provide additional shade.

From about 7am STHARC members

drifted in to help look after the site and

chat to anyone passing by interested in

older vehicles and STHARC in particular. Judy & Barry Davis turned up to help and

Judy’s contribution of delicious morning tea cake and slices was most welcome.

Other members looking after the site during the day were John Kazmarek, Bill Butcher,

David Buckley, John and Pam Corbett, Lawrie Nock, Jannie Brown and Ronda Cornwell.

Malcolm Stewart popped by to say hello and it was good to see him. He was holding a car

panel so he must be on the mend! Other members dropped in also, some to just say “Hi”

such as Paul Anderson, Craig Rowland and others who had had brought cars to the

Showground main arena display Eg Steve Cole, Simon Brown, John Thomas, Andrew Neuss

and Pauline Campbell, Gary Hatch, Charlie Adams, & Paul Cuneen.

Trophy winners were Grace Corbett and the Blue Roo, best international car, Albert Neuss

and the Chrysler, Jantje and Simon Brown’s HOT32C Best Paint (by Real Steel Group), and

Best Interior (by John Creswell from Nu-Trim at Batemans Bay)

By 2.30pm most members had left, and Allan and Malcolm packed up the tables and

STHARC information etc and dropped the STHARC gazebos just in time for Hazel to pick

up Malcolm. We packed up the remainder of the site with some help from Chris’ daughter

Cassandra and were gone by 3pm. It was just too hot to remain any longer.

T he story of Betty, the 1970 Type 1

Volkswagen, started many years

ago after a mate of mine had a few too

many drinks one night and decided to

purchase Betty from the original

Canberra owner. When he

turned up at the door of Betty’s owner,

she thought he was joking, but true to his

word he handed over the cash for the

agreed purchase price

The car had less than a weeks' worth of

rego and he basically put petrol in it and

drove it to Sydney, where he started his

"restoration". He told me of his purchase and how

proud he was of taking on the

restoration of a classic vehicle. But he

doesn’t have a mechanical bone in his

body! I said to him that when he'd had

enough, to give me a call to take Betty

VW Beetle 1970, 1500 Type 1 “ Betty”

Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 13

off his hands, with the idea of restoring

the car for my wife.

Six years later my mate had met the love of

his life, and they decided to move back to

England, so I received a call asking me if I

was still interested in restoring Betty!

I asked him, exactly how much restoration

work had he done, as the car looked to be

intact. His response was that he removed

the chrome trim and the tail light lenses.

Mmmm!!! Betty was in my possession for

$500. My daughter fell in love with the car,

and so we decided that we'd restore Betty to

be her first car. I'd restored a beetle back in

the 90's and didn't think that it’d take me

long to bring her up to scratch.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Beetles are renowned for being rusty, but

Betty was very close to going to the

crushers, or being sold as a parts car. The

problem for us, was that the car had a name,

and for anyone who has a passion for cars,

understands the bond between man and

machine.

So we started stripping down Betty, and I

must say that the rust was pretty bad. The

entire floors and rear firewall had to be

replaced. The B pillars were rusted through,

and needed to be reinforced and re-welded.

The heater channels were surprisingly rust

free. The front firewall paned and the rear C

pillars all needed attention. It took me close

on two years to restore Betty back to

roadworthy condition. By roadworthy, I

mean, that everything was replaced.

A lot of the donor parts for the rust

replacement came from Nicks

(volksparts) farm out at Bungendore. He

was a great help, and source of

information and parts.

Everything but the

engine was replaced

Betty is not a concourse car, but one that should see

my daughter through her

provisional licence years.

Come Into A Time Machine! from David Buckley

R honda Winnett kindly donated some of our very much missed colleague John’s collection of magazines to our club. Checking through a few 15

year old “Unique Cars” I was caught up in a time machine and indulged a bit o’ day dreaming, what I shoulda, coulda, mighta done in a parallel universe. Not to be of course (we’d all like our “druthers” of course) but fun to indulge occasionally. Some of the ads that caught my eye included a ‘72 Charger XL $4900 obo, ‘76 Landau $6200 ono, Chrysler Drifter p/van $6900, HK GTS Monaro 307 10,000 ono, and (my personal favourite) a ‘62 VW Samba 23 window Bus “restored to immaculate condition” $20,000.

Something similar recently sold at auction in the US for 1/4 million, another set a European record at a German auction.

From Lawrie Nock (photos David Buckley)

W e received quite late in the day

details of the arrangements for

participation by classic/historic vehicle

owners in the Summernats Family

Sunday. Some of the information out

there was confusing but in the end the

arrangements were much the same as

in earlier years and we were spared the

need to provide prior to the day details

of vehicles and the like.

Easier than ever to be in it.

There was no structured gathering at

Dickson College car park and

procession to the EPIC site but when I

arrived there was a nice turnout of

STHARC vehicles and members who

had managed to group together. About

10% of the club membership arrived at

EPIC with their club

cars.

Media reports on the event, report it to be

a bigger success than in previous

years.

The weather was

very kind to us

providing plenty of

sunburn protection

in the form of cloud

cover and moderating

expenditure on cool

d r i n k s b y

maintaining a reasonable maximum

temperature. There were many people

with very special vehicles enjoying

themselves. I found the noise a bit too

much in some places but it was

escapable.

I did not manage to track down all

members during my stay and did not

recognize any other STHARC vehicles

elsewhere. Therefore our attendance at

the event as I noted it was as follows:

David Buckley: 1941 Ford ½ ton ute Max and Maree de Oliver: Mini Moke Ray Malam: 3.0 BMW Lucas & Jo Ssi, Jantje and Simon Brown: Karman Ghia and 32 Model A hot rod Paul Anderson: 1971 Hunter Lawrie Nock: Bentley T coupe

L ast November I said we were hoping to get BIG HP from Shannon’s ‘big

block’ Goggomobil Dart (cranked out 3.7hp at the last Summernats), but got

whipped by an 11hp motorised esky (oh the shame). Calls were made, discussions

held, logistics arranged and hey presto, we got ourselves an exchange 400cc donk.

Friday rolled along and the Goggomobil’s first official duty was to lead the

Shannons City Cruise. Passenger Chic Henry (Mr HP) was blown away by the neck

snapping acceleration. Then the Goggo stalled just 2 blocks from Exhibition Park,

running really roughly. So we left it to cool properly before heading back to the dyno

cell for round 1!

We were up against our old friend - the esky, and a cool ‘Model T’ golf cart with a

Suzuki 500cc twin! Surely we were toast…1st the esky: but clutch dramas limited

him to 4.9hp! Then the golf cart couldn’t get any more than 7.9hp to the rollers! Our

turn... 1st run was 7.6hp … but 2nd ... 8.6hp!!! Not my double digits I was after, but

JUST enough to snatch the crown on the day!

There was a second round booked for Saturday but the others were a no show as they

were still working to resolve the mechanical issues suffered from the fierce

competition. We reeled off a healthy 8.7hp to back it up! I’m still dirty we

couldn’t crack the 10, I guess it’s time to start researching expansion chambers and

look towards Summernats 29! See you all at Shannon’s Wheels in March.

From your Club President.

This year the STHARC Christmas function was held at the Sutton Hall. The club’s biggest event each year! This year held at the Sutton Village hall, which was spacious, had a huge field to park the cars, and had warmth and charm of an older building. All agreed it was a good choice.

A good turnout of about 70 adults and 15 -20 children enjoyed the festivities. Extra seating had to be arranged at the last minute as it became obvious more people attended than had indicated. The organizing committee had confirmation of 48

Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 25

people attending and had arranged seating for 65 in the hall. Members are reminded if you plan to attend these type of functions please let the committee know in advance.

Lee Davis again made a large superbly decorated ginger bread house for the lucky door prize, won by Charlie Adams. Thank you Lee for your hard work, it is much appreciated, and then Hazel and helpers ran the arbitrary raffle with lots of prizes, lots of winners and lots of fun.

Santa arrived in Max’s mighty Mini Moke on time and had the undivided attention of the children, not to mention some larger “children” also vying for his attention. He was indeed a jolly and friendly Santa and as he slowly made his way up the stairs he stopped to greet everyone, shake their hand and he knew all their names. He obviously had his “Nice/Naughty” meter on high gain but thankfully everyone passed under that radar. Troy McLeish was seen on Santa’s lap with his long list for Christmas wishes and Santa also had a special gift for Laurie and Jane Nock.

As in previous years the meal was superb. What a feast. This year the club again provided all the chicken, ham and meat free, and the members brought in salads, side dishes, nibbles and dessert. The tables were groaning under all that weight but there was not much left after an hour. Thank you to all those who bought salads and desserts.

A special thanks to those who helped in the kitchen.

The Presidents raffle was well patronized this year and raised $270 for the club coffers. Some of the

page 26 The Wheel # 150

10 prizes were made up of items donated to the club by Rhonda Winnett, and Barry and Judy Davis. Thank you, Rhonda, Judy and Barry. We had a wide arrangement of historical cars on show, some decorated in Christmas tinsel, bells and bows. Best decorated vehicle was won by David & Gill Buckley’s Mercery eight, runner up Ian and Krys McLeish’s Model A Ford, with Albert Neuss’s Plymouth third in the voting.

Membership badge Craig Roxburgh (finally)

In the light of the proposal for special

vehicles to be granted some type of

concessional registration it was suggested

that STHARC members consider what we

would like to see in place. If the attempts to

have other vehicles granted special status is

successful, registration authorities may take

the opportunity to review all concessional

arrangements. Historic/classic vehicle

registrations as we know them may be up for

termination. STHARC members need to

develop a position on what options we might

like as opposed to what we do not want to

see happen and be in a position to make

positive suggestions should changes be

inevitable. Looking at actual usage, it may

be advantageous for many classic/historic

owners to have a permit type of registration,

provided it reasonably accurately reflects

vehicle use. Many club members would be

hard pressed to get to use their vehicles on

5% of the available days each year even if

they have only one. Ownership of more than

one vehicle reduces this % even further.

Owners of many historic/classic registered

vehicles would struggle to get each vehicle

out on the road for more than 2% of the

available days in a year. Most cars on the

road do not cost more than $1,000 per

annum for third party and registration. A pro

rata fee at up to 5% of anything under $1,000

would be cheaper than the current

arrangement. Message from research team

looking into ACT Motor vehicle accidents.

Directed at ACT Drivers and how they cope

with driving in NSW not the other way

around. ACT drivers have been invited to

participate.

There was a report in another club’s

newsletter on enforcement of new

regulations for ‘D’ shackles for trailers. No

evidence of this could be found on the RNS

website. No-one at the meeting was aware

of any changes to legislation in this regard.

The common sense obligation to use

appropriate size fixings was noted. A 1927

Chev tourer was offered for sale at the

Queanbeyan Swap meet. The pictures were

encouraging. Enquiries about the vehicle by

a club member suggest that it may no longer

look as it did in the pictures and may in fact

be in pieces. The Fathers Day gathering at

Alice Springs falls the week after the big

trucks muster. Suggested that anyone

contemplating attending the event consider

being there a week earlier to experience the

truck show & visit the 1st class transport

museum . Paul Anderson reported that he

has completed the restoration of his 1970

Beetle and it is back on the road on full rego.

He also advised that the road to Nowra via

Nerriga is now completely sealed, last few k

of gravel have been removed to reveal a

beautiful bitumen surface. A question was

raised about the decision to raise the annual

subscription fee to $50. This decision was

made by the Committee in response to the

future financial circumstances of the club

and it is not proposed that it will be

introduced until 2015/2016 membership

year. By-laws will need to be amended to

reflect the change.

1) Apologies Re GM/Chev bumper stickers 4 sale ad last Nov. Davo’s a bit excited & thinks I’m anti the brand but not so. From what I can gather (because he was bit tired and emotional on the phone), the Chev/GM bumpers stickers are :

“I crossed the Murrumbidgee

(at Coppins Crossing)”,

and

“I went around State Circle”.

There, can’t be fairer than that. 2) John Thomas (a Chev, & Rumanian tractor man through & through) sent me this (really!):

If you want to be happy for a day go fishing.

If you want to be happy for a year - marry

If you want to be happy for life buy a Ford”.

No correspondence will be entered into; go see John for an explanation.

Drive defensively people - there are some serious nutters on the road. Recently the NSW Traffic & Highway Patrol made these bookings: 1) Great Wall Ute 186 in 110km/h zone,

$2252 (12pts), 6 mth license susp, plates confiscated & rego cancelled .

2) 24 yo male 135/80 zone; as above.

3) P plater (below) 148 in 60 in an unregistered car, as above.

4) 24 yo male 120/60 in a 2010 Ferrari he bought 2 days before, as above
