I am really enjoying my time with you in the villages and I particularly enjoyed meeting you at the Carol and Christmas Services associated with Boxted and Langham Schools, and in both the parishes churches over the Christmas period. I look forward to meeting you all again in the coming year. A special thank-you to everyone who sang so well in the services. That first Christmas gave birth to a new life, Jesus’, and through him there is the opportunity for a new start and a new future for us all. The New Year gives us the opportunity to accept all that he offers us and for him to be part of a new start for us all. Through him we can review the past, consider the future and journey on with him as part of our lives. As someone who is making a new start in the villages I invite you to journey with me as I review my past and consider how best to journey on in my life. As part of these assessments you may like to join me for a Confirmation Course that I have started on Saturday mornings. This course is open to all, including those who would like to explore the Christian Faith with a view to being confirmed and those who are already confirmed who would like to review the basis of their faith. You may also like to join a Lent Course which we hope to hold, starting at the end of February, leading up to Easter (5 th April). Additionally, as part of our preparation for Easter we will be holding services in Holy Week, including Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and there will be an Easter Day service to round off our period of Lent and to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. To find out more of the practicalities please contact me on [email protected], or contact our Churchwardens, Stephen Garner, Jos Carter and Graham Pullen, or please look at the Church web site lb-churches.co.uk as information comes on stream. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very healthy and fulfilled 2015, PANTO AT BOXTED On 30 December the Royal British Legion clubhouse at Boxted was transformed into a Theatre Royal for two most memorable performances of “Cinderella”, devised and presented by the talented and resourceful Cherry Watts with the able assistance of her husband John. FEBRUARY 2015

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear Friends,

May I again thank you for your warm welcome to Langham and Boxted.

You may also like to join a Lent Course which we hope to hold, starting at the end of February, leading up to Easter (5th April).

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very healthy and fulfilled 2015,

PANTO AT BOXTED On 30 December the Royal British Legion clubhouse at Boxted was transformed into a Theatre Royal for two most memorable performances of “Cinderella”, devised and presented by the talented and resourceful Cherry Watts with the able assistance of her husband John. The show was in aid of the RBL Poppy Appeal and captured the very best of village fun and humour; the audiences responded with huge enthusi-asm, ever ready to add their own quips. Left: Ugly Sister Violet (Barry Took) is resigned to the advances of Buttons (James Petts). Right: Kingy (Scott Dolling) rather enjoys the protection of Ugly Sisters Lavender (Chris Mackay) and Violet (Barry Took).

MEMORIAL TO WILFRID TOLHURST

In September 2013 we reported that the Dedham Vale Society’s (DVS) had had to abandon its project to erect a flagpole on St Mary’s Church in memory of the late Wilfrid Tolhurst, a benefactor of the church and at the time of his death chairman of the Society. Last year the church’s insurers had a change of mind and agreed to accept lightning protection of the tower only, the much lower cost of which has rendered the project once again viable. With the agreement of the Parochial Church Council, the DVS is now engaging contractors and after a gap of nearly eighty years the flag of St George will shortly be seen from across the Dedham Vale, flying boldly from St Mary’s Church tower.

THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY Collections for the Society at the Carol, Crib and Christingle church services and the Boxted St Peter’s School Carol Service came to a remarkable £414. February is the month in which the home collection boxes are gathered in for counting. Will people who have them please bring them to a service at St Mary’s or St Peter’s on 8, 15 or 22 February (see the panel on this page) or contact Gill Pullen (Boxted, 273804) or Helen Sims (Langham, 321286), who will gladly arrange collection.

HEATING OIL SCHEME Orders for the next delivery of domestic oil under the group scheme must be made (in person only) at Langham Community Shop not later than Sunday 8 February.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP In November, Jeff Page returned to deliver the second instalment of his talk on the life and times of Charles Dickens. Well on his way to being an established author, Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836, the couple sharing their home with Catherine’s sister Mary. It is not known whether Dickens had a relationship with the latter. In 1857 he left his wife to live with the young actress Ellen Tiernan. Dickens’s writings increasingly reflected the plight of children at a time when half the funerals in London were of children. He spent his latter years largely as a social campaigner, being responsible for securing the closure of harsh Yorkshire mill schools and raising funds to establish Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. A social and fund-raising quiz night in December raised £170 for the Royal British Legion.

BOXTED WI Armed with cuttings from their gardens, members at the November meeting showed great ingenuity in their response to a demonstration of Xmas wreath-making. Some quite lovely wreaths were made. In early December members enjoyed an excellent Christmas Supper at the Leavenheath Lion. A week later they were joined in the Village Hall by friends from the Mile End WI and other guests at their Christmas Party, where entertainment was by the fabulous “First Class Brass”. Betting slips and horseracing (Overall Winner: Mary Chapman)made for a very different and really fun meeting . Boxted WI will hold an open meeting on 10 March, when non-members will be very welcome to go an hear Christine Beadle talk of “The Essex Scrubber”. The tickets are £5 each, inclusive of a soup and bread roll and tea or coffee and a cake. Please speak to Ann Bure on 271103. The very attractive 2015 programme includes a visit to Hayman’s Gin Distillery and an orienteering/mystery walk in High Woods Country Park.

BOXTED EVERGREEN CLUB In the course of their Christmas celebrations the Evergreens had an excellent three-course lunch at Tiptree “New Times”, calling at Perrywoods Garden Centre on their way home. The following week they had their Christmas Party, at which they were fascinated by Magic Marvo’s amazing tricks. There was a very tasty spread organised by Barbara Woodmason and Elaine Mott, whose efforts, and those of others, were much appreciated.

POPPY APPEAL The Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal realised a tremendous £2,034 in Boxted , to which must be added some £500 in proceeds from “Cinderella (see the front page). The house-to-house collection in Langham brought in £1,192, which included £172 given at the Remembrance Service at St Mary’s. The organisers in the two villages add their personal thanks to those of the RBL for the efforts of the collectors and for the generosity of the many donors.

LANGHAM WI The December meeting was a celebration of Christmas, when members were joined by friends from Boxted and East Bergholt WIs. Member Carolyn Blacklock demonstrated making Christmas table decorations, after which the other members made their own. The first meeting of the New Year gave members much to think on and to realise how fortunate they are: Vivienne Wiggins had come to tell of the work of Beacon House, Colchester, in looking after the homeless, providing warm clothing, food and daily help. There will be a representative of Langham WI at the centenary celebration of WIs in the UK to be held in the Albert Hall in June. At home, the centenary year will see a number of expeditions; they include a theatre trip and visits to a snowdrop garden and the Bulmer Brick & Tile Works.

SHOEBOX APPEAL 2014 A handsome total of 137 well-filled shoeboxes were collected—30 from Boxted St Peter’s School 53 from Langham Primary School and 54 between the two villages at large. Well done, everyone!

CBC has started work on its new Local Plan, which will shape where development will take place in the town and villages until 2032. The Plan affects everyone in Boxted, Langham and elsewhere in the borough area. Documents prepared on “Issues and Options” are now the subject of consultation in which residents and businesses are urged to offer their views. A series of “Workshops”, where people can give their views, was begun (without much notice) on 17 January. Those to be held after the publication of this issue of the Newsletter will be on 31 January (Great Horkesley New Village Hall); 7 February (Tiptree); 11 February (West Mersea); 14 February (Wivenhoe); 14 February (Hythe Community Centre); 21 February (Marks Tey Parish Hall).
