Overlooked Assets Bruce Miracle

The Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library currently subscribes to roughly 80 electronic databases designed to aid you in your scholarly endeavors. However, only a small number of these, such as Academic Search Premier or PsycARTICLES, get very much use. So from time to time we like to remind you that there are some great resources available that you may not be aware of, but which could be very helpful in your time at Union. Some of them can also be interesting or fun in their own right. Although there are about thirty or forty resources that might qualify as an “overlooked gem” or “hidden treasure” etc. (please choose preferred cliché) I will focus on four: Alt-Press Watch provides access to the alternative side of things. It has newspapers, journals, and magazines covering a wide array of controversial topics, including social issues, gender issues, the environment, government, feminism, civil rights, the arts, entertainment etc. APW has the full-text of over 200 alternative and independent press publications.

The Encyclopedia of Life Sciences has over 5,000 peer-reviewed articles in 15 major areas, including Immunology, Neurology, Biochemistry and even Bioethics & Philosophy. There are also external links to scientific and educational websites, as well as an extensive article glossary, overviews, and suggested articles for students.

Polling the Nations allows you to cross-search over 18,000 public opinion polls performed by Gallup, Roper, Harris, and many other organizations. A fascinating aspect of polls is the fact that they go beyond statistics to reveal the attitudes, fears, and hopes of people. There appear to be polls about everything imaginable, from cyberbullying to belief in UFOs. This is a much underutilized resource, so consider incorporating opinion poll results in a future research paper or presentation.

Science Reference Center is a comprehensive database with full-text from a variety of sources including science encyclopedias and other reference books, as well as journals, magazines, and all types of published reports. Besides the more scholarly resources, this database has a multitude of interesting readable items about almost any scientific topic.

So give some of our lesser known resources a chance. You might find that what you need

for a paper or just for your own enjoyment is hidden in plain sight!

A Lot of Dots Sean Jump

There are a couple of new “dots” in the Library, courtesy of Randi Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg, well-known throughout the online world as CEO of Zuckerberg Media, the former marketing director of Facebook, and sister to her likewise famous brother Mark, is also an author. Predictably, both of her books—dot complicated and Dot.—deal with our changing technological landscape and the way this affects human activity and interaction. What may surprise you is that with each book, Zuckerberg seems to be arguing that there is more to life than Facebook.

Dot. is actually a children’s book, with illustrations by award-winning artist Joe Berger. Dot. is about a little tech-savvy girl named, of course, Dot. As described on the inside flap, Dot is “a spunky little girl obsessed with electronic devices.” She’s good at swiping and sharing and all the other essential skills of electronic existence, but she’s forgotten there are other skills she used to have before technology took over her life. When Dot’s Mom tells the little girl to go outside and “reboot, recharge, and restart,” Dot rediscovers the fun of playing outdoors and interacting with friends in the flesh and blood, not just their electronic avatars. Dot doesn’t give up her technology, but the point of the book seems to be to remind kids that while devices are nice, they aren’t everything.

Likewise, dot Complicated addresses the ways in which the evolving technological world has already changed our lives and how people need to perhaps reassess the role of our gadgets and online personas in our day to day activities. The book is subtitled “Untangling our Wired Lives,” and while no book written by a Zuckerberg is going to condemn the ongoing tech-revolution, dot Complicated is perhaps written with a surprisingly critical eye. As Zuckerberg writes in the introduction, “We have such powerful technology at our fingertips. But we need to make sure our attachment to being online doesn’t get in the way of our lives and relationships offline. We need to find balance between being connected to millions of people around the world and being present with the people we love, standing right next to us.”

And then, Zuckerberg concedes, “It’s complicated.” But perhaps her book—with chapters addressing Self, Friends, Family, Career, and more—might at least offer some good suggestions pertaining to the technological vortex that is modern America.
