CasesofInterest:
SometimeswethinktelevisionprogramslikeNCISandCSIaretheonlyoneswhouse“forensics”tosolvecrimes.Well,wemaynothavethetechnologyasshownonTVwhereinformationisimputedinasmallhandhelddeviceandthesuspectinformationisprovidedwithinsecondsorminutes,butwedohavetechnologyavailabletouswhichtakesadamagedDVRharddriveandretrievesthevideo.ThatisexactlywhathappenedinacaseinvolvingaburglaryatHogiYogi.MonthsagotheHogiYogiinSpringvillewasburglarized(withdamagesinexcessof$60,000.00).DuringtheinvestigationshoeprintswerefoundalongwithadamagedDVRharddrive.Withtheassistanceofatechnologyforensicspecialist,imageswerefoundonthedamagedharddriveandasuspectwasidentified.Alocalresidentwasidentified,located,interviewedandaconfessionwasobtainedfortheburglaryanddamagetothebusiness.ThesuspectwasarrestedandbookedintotheUtahCountyJail.
Anotherexampleshowingtechnology?Well,becauseofgoodtechnologytheSpringvilleFiredepartmentwasdispatchedtoafirealarmatSpringHavenupHobbleCreekCanyon.Whenfirecrewsenteredtheutilityroomwherethealarmsalertedthedangertheyencounteredthetemperaturesexceeding100degrees.Aboilerhadmalfunctioned,causingthedangerousspikeintemperatures!Firemenwereabletoshutitdownbeforetheboilercausedafiretobreakout.Localresidentswerenotevacuatedandtherewasnodamagetothestructure.
Aresidenthadtherareopportunitytoseea“BaldEagle”inSpringville,whatwasevenmorerarewasthatitwasintheirbackyardinjuredandhadtobecaptured.TheAnimalControlOfficeralongwithassistancefrompatrolofficerswasabletocapturetheeagle.Theyfoundithadaninjuredleg.OncecaptureditwasturnedovertotheDivisionofNaturalResources(DNR).
Mostpeoplewouldliketohavea“haulmark”traileroftheirown.Sorecentlysomeonedecidedtheywantedone.Theyjustdidn’twanttopayforit.Thebusiness“Top‐It”reportedthetrailerstolenfromtheirlotinSpringville.AfewdayslaterthetrailerwasfoundinaWalmartparkinglotinAmericanFork.Anobservantofficersawthetrailerandcheckedit.anddiscovereditwasstolen.Itwasdecidedtheownerbecontactedandaskedtorespondtopickupthetrailer.Thetrailerwasfoundtocontainagreatdealofstolenproperty.ThepropertywascollectedbydetectivesfromtheSpringvillePoliceDepartmentandownerswereeventuallylocated.Theproperty,valuedatalmost$3,000.00,wasreleasedtotheowners.
Oneofthemostfearedsituationsanofficercanencounteronthejobistobecaughtinashooting.TwoofficersfromtheUtahCountySheriff’sDepartmentexperiencedthatlastweek.Onedeputylosthislifeintheshootingandthesecondwasshotinthehead.Wheneversuchincidentsoccur,amultijurisdictionaltaskforceiscalledintoinvestigate.Threeofourofficersrespondedtothatcallout.
Bytheway,theseconddeputysustainedseriousinjurybutisexpectedtorecoverfromhisinjuries.DeputyGregSherwoodbeganhiscareerinSpringvilleasanofficerandmanyofushereinthedepartmentknowhimfairlywell.Weareallsaddenedbywhathashappenedtotwofellowofficersandthepainsufferedbytheirfamilies.Ourthoughts,prayersandcondolencesgoouttoDeputyWride’sfamilyandweallwishaspeedyandfullrecoverytoDeputySherwood.

DuringthemonthofJanuary,SpringvillePoliceDepartmentmadeonehundredfivearrestschargingsuspectswithmorethantwohundreddifferentoffenses.Byfar,mostofourarrestswereformisdemeanorcrimes,suchasshoplifting.Evenso,therewerethirty‐sixfelonycrimeswereincludedinthosearrests.Feloniesrangedfromburglary,todrugcharges,toonesuspectwhowasarrestedforfivecountsofsexuallyassaultingachild.
