He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me

cower in ashes; my soul is bereft of peace; I have

forgotten what happiness is; so I say, "Gone is my glory,

and all that I had hoped for from the LORD."

Lamentations 3:16-18

On Thursday, February 14th at 6:30 pm I will offer a ministry

event named, “Hope Amidst the Ashes.” It will be a time for folks

who have experienced loss of any kind (that is to say, all of us) to

gather to receive care and, with God’s help, hope for healing.

Grief, if ignored, can weigh us down and break our spirit. Grief can

cause us to become bitter, cynical, pervasively sad, tired, hopeless,

and guilt-ridden. Our physical health suffers. We may even curse God

and be tempted to abandon our faith. I wonder sometimes if many of

the world’s problems are the result of unhealthy grieving…

Now some reading this article might think that this event is only

for those grieving the death of a loved one. Certainly we experience

grief when those we love die. Yes, this event is for those persons.

But we also experience loss from relationships that do not meet

our hopes, careers that go sideways or backwards or end too soon. We

grieve when unexpected health concerns cause future dreams to be

discarded. Grief affects our children and youth, too. So come.

It is coincidental that this event takes place on Valentine’s Day

when our culture will focus on love. More importantly for me, though,

is that it takes place the day after Ash Wednesday and the beginning

of the season of Lent. On Ash Wednesday (February 13th) during the

10:30 am and 7:00 pm worship services, we will receive an ashen sign

of the cross on our foreheads and be reminded that this earthly life

will someday end. Reminded of our finite bodies, our hearts and

minds will turn to the cross and the sure hope that death is not the

end of our lives. There is resurrection new life in Jesus Christ! There

is hope in our experience of grief.

This hope dispels our fears. Christ is our courage. With this truth

in mind, Kerri Sherwood, Kathy Baas and the Worship and Music

Ministry team have created our 2013 Lenten theme of: “No. Fear.

Here.” Invite a friend to join us for worship to hear God’s word and

experience loving community. Let them know that there is Hope

Amidst the Ashes and No. Fear. Here.

With Courage and Hope,

Pastor Tom

Dear members of Trinity,

December was a great

month—five Sundays and

Christmas! So, we were

ahead in both Unified

Giving and the Building

Fund.

Something to think

about—we are over

$12,000 behind in our

budgeted giving! We are

in a good position with

cash only because the committees are not spending!

I am very pleased with the giving to fix our roof, we have collected $11,445.00 for it!

Please remember now our expenses will increase a lot with the winter heating bills. Please make

sure to keep up with your Unified Giving and Debt Reduction please.

Also keep everyone in your prayers, they help!

Thanks,

Jim Lichtenheld

Financial Stewardship

The Social ministry and CUSH committee will

meet on the first Sunday of the month, in the

church library between services at 9:10am. The

next meeting will be on February 3rd.

Please remember CANS FOR CUSH on

February 3rd. Please drop off any bagged

aluminum cans in the back hallway of the church

on the first Sunday of each month. The recycling

money will benefit CUSH.

CUSH continues important advocacy work

through their various task forces. CUSH

continues to work on the statewide initiative to

use state funding for treatment programs for non

-violent offenders instead of incarcerating these

individuals. This is the CUSH 11 X 15

Campaign. A CUSH representative

will be giving a presentation during

the education hour at Trinity later

this spring. Watch the Tidings and bulletin for

the date TBA.

CUSH has 2 buses going to Madison for the

People of Faith United for Justice day on

Thursday, March 14, 2013. This is a day-long

gathering to learn, discuss, pray and advocate

together for social justice issues of importance to

all people of Wisconsin. If you are interested in

attending this event, there are flyers on the table

in the hallway as you enter the gathering space.

Bus transportation and lunch are provided for

$35.00.

Living Simply with God

A 40-Day Hunger Calendar

ELCA World Hunger is offering a Lenten resource called Living Simply with God to help

with our Lenten journey. You can download the calendar and find out more information at

http://goo.gl/0WqB9

What is this “calendar”?

Any calendar helps you mark your days on Earth, comparing them to each other, making

sense out of each one. This calendar is about hunger that

God wants us to abbreviate, alleviate, eliminate. The

calendar is also about how you can live a joyous and

abundant life, filled with generosity towards others. A life

modeled on Jesus’ own. A life that’s lived simply so that

others can simply live.

What is this calendar for?

The 40-day calendar is a simple way to:

Take stock of your life;

Simplify how you spend your time;

Move God’s version of the good life into your life;

Help change the lives of people whose personal

“calendars” hold unending hunger, bone-crushing

poverty and insulting injustice every day;

Find hope for your life and the lives of others.
