February, here it is the middle of the month, boy is time flying by. Next thing you will know, we all will be at
Spring Fling in April. For myself, I can’t wait. Just another weekend of FUN, FUN, FUN! You know when I joined
GWRRA, I never knew it was going to be anything like the Fun I have been having. Love meeting new friends, vis-
iting the friends I have made and those that I am going to meet. This has been an adventure for me. I never knew
that Chapter TN-N was going to turn out the way it has and boy has it been good to all of us in the Chapter. The
Chapter staff is just Awesome and the members are the BEST of the BEST. They are all involved in everything we do. I can’t say enough about the members. They are my BEST FRIENDS.
We, almost all, went to the Winter Event and had a Smashing Time. I mean it was GREAT! Even Eldon
showed out a little bit with Nolan, his grandson and that was funny. I love it when the members have a good
time, it makes them want more. Everyone got into the spirit of the Theme and we all came out dressed up for it.
Cannot believe that we came home with 5 plaques, but we did. 1st place for the Largest Chapter Attendance, 1st
place for the Best Dressed Costume, our Webmaster won the Webmaster of the Year, 2nd place for Best Mascot
and finally , I won the Best Dressed Individual Costume. I wasn’t even trying for it, just wanted to walk down the
aisle with the rest of the folks. Boy was there a lot of folks that walk the aisle and they were dressed out. I ready
didn’t expect to win anything, just wanted to have some FUN. There’s one thing about it, if you don’t participate,
you can’t win, but you can still have FUN! I have no idea what the ladies of Chapter TN-N have in store for us at
Spring Fling, but we usually leave it up to them to tell us what we are going to do in the contest. I know it will be
GOOD!
On Feb 9th, we hosted a training day at Chapter TN-N in Jackson, TN. Boy what a turnout! We had 22 mem-
bers to come and 2 visitors from Chapter TN-W2. We had Medic First Aid/CPR, Co-Rider, Motorist Awareness, Driving in Difficult Elements, Trailering, Listening Communication, Crash Scene Response, Team Riding and Mo-
torcycling with the Mature. I am sure Shannon Seaton, our Chapter Educator will elaborate more on that. A lot
of our members moved up in the education Levels. We had a Great time and a Special Thanks to the District Staff
for coming up and teaching the class. The Instructors’ were Glenda Keough Assist. District Director, Marie
Crowe Assist. District Educator, Jim & Mary Cobb, Rider Education from Chapter TN-G and Gary & Patti
Hamilton, District Educators. What a GREAT CREW that always keeps it FUN to LEARN!
Now we are planning for Spring Fling. What have these ladies got in store for us? I don’t know, but I do know
it is going to be FUN, FUN, and FUN! When Sandy gets together with our girls in the Chapter, look out, some-
thing is going to give. She is all about getting things going and making it worth our while. We have so much plan-
ning for this year; I hope we can get it all in. Everyone in the Chapter has an idea of what to do next; it just
keeps us on our toes. I expect a good turnout from the Chapter for Spring Fling because everyone wants to get
involved. By the way, I figure Ed Grazier is going to give is a run for the money, since he is the
new Chapter Director for Chapter TN-Y, but we like competition. But keep in mind, it’s all in
FUN!
Don’t forget, Chapter TN-N has the Tennessee Traveling Plaque and will be given away at
the next meeting on March 2nd, come and get it.
Until then,
Ride Safe, Ride Often, Have Fun

Well, it was great to see everyone at the February meeting. It was kind of sad to not have very many visitors.
But hey, March is coming up quickly and we will have the Tennessee Traveling Plaque to give away.
We sure had a great response at our training day. Several members now have CPR under their belts. We
want to thank all of the district staff that came and taught all the classes.
Our Blessings go out to Jeanette Bowens on the loss of her brother, I know that they will miss him dearly.
Don’t forget about the Horizon class the last weekend of this month. Go and have a lot of fun, and get a lot of
knowledge. I look forward to seeing all of you at the March meeting.
I wanted to leave you with a smile. Eldon and Debbie

And our visitors,

Even thought the date on this article is 2009, our riding season could be any year and the information would be just as important. Thanks to the Iowa Senior District Educators for the article.
RIDER ED ‘GIMME 5’
RIDE DEFENSIVELY…
We are now well into the 2009 riding season and we hope that you are all enjoying it as much as we are.
Many of you were able to attend this year’s Safety Weekend and were able to get some riding skills refreshed.
By all accounts the participants learned new skills and picked up additional knowledge that can be used while
out on those many rides. By the time this is read you may well be on your way to or back from Wing Ding and
we hope you brought back some KNOWLEDGE you can share with your FRIENDS while having FUN and using SAFETY when out riding. If you have not been able to take an ERC, TRC or other riding course please remem-
ber that…
Nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents are caused by a driver violating a rider's right-of-way. Usually this is because the motorcyclists was not seen. To avoid this, YOU MUST RIDE AS IF NO ONE ELSE
ON THE ROAD CAN SEE YOU!
Helpful tips to remember: *Slow down at intersections and ride through carefully.
*Watch for turning vehicles.
*Stay out of driver's blind spots.
*Signal well in advance of any change in your driving pattern.
*Don’t assume a driver sees you, even if eye contact is made.
*Use your horn when necessary or if you aren't sure a driver can see where you are.
*RIDE PROUD… DRESS LOUD
Be careful when you approach another vehicle. It's hard for drivers in oncoming vehicles to accurately judge
how fast your motorcycle is moving. That's why it's up to you to make sure you can react safely if another driver
suddenly turns or pulls out in front of you. Also, make sure you have plenty of space between you and the vehi-
cles in front of you. And speaking of space, make some space on your 2009 calendar for this year’s District
Rally in Ames, Iowa August 6 to 8. Fly on in and have some FUN with your fellow WINGERS. This one prom-
ises to be one of the best. Let your fellow riders know just how much PARTICIPATION = FUN.
Remember, if you don't look out for yourself on the road,
…no one else will. Joe and Judy Pirillo

Seems, I start every newsletter article with a statement about a very busy month. I do this because we are a
busy Chapter. We are busy having FUN the entire month. Being Couple of the Year is providing us with even
more opportunities to have FUN with other Chapters. We are looking forward to “Chasing the Wood” for the Cou-
ple of the Year. We got to meet the other couples in the District during the Winter Event.
Winter Event was a blast. Chapter N was the largest in attendance and took home several other awards. I’m
sure if there was a prize for having THE MOST FUN, we would have brought it home too. Our monthly gathering was next and as usual, most of our active members were there and our meeting room
was full. If we continue to grow at the same rate as last year, we will have to find a larger place to meet. We did-
n’t give away the WOOD, not enough Wingers braved the weather to take it home. Maybe the weather will be
warmer for the March gathering.
We also had an entire day of education. The Medic First Aid/CPR class and several leadership seminars were
presented by District. Thanks to all the folks that gave their time to make the classes possible.

Chapter N started February with our monthly gathering on the 2nd that recorded 30 members, two visitors
from Chapter Y and our Assistant District Director, Glenda Keough in attendance. Way to go Chapter. You are
awesome. We have a membership average of 31—almost perfect attendance. We got the meeting off to a lot of
fun as we played a very active game. Each Olympic Team was represented and earned points toward the Gold,
Bronze, and Silver metals for the end of the year competition. Jacob, Nolan and Big O competed against each other. Nolan "sucked up” more than the other two. As the winner, Nolan earned an extra 100 points for his
Olympic Team. Way to go Nolan! Members were on their feet cheering on their team members. Great FUN!!
Shannon Seaton, our Educator, worked with District staff and brought an all day safety training class to
Jackson on February 9th. We had 22 members, 2 visitors and 6 district staff at the training. We are working
on those levels and expect that quite a few moved up another level by the end of the day. I enjoyed every class.
Bringing the classes to your Chapter is the way to go.
We will finish out the month with those who will be attending the Horizons training on February 23-24, 2013.
Way to go Chapter N—we are on the move!!!
So what can you expect to see from Chapter N in March? We are back to Dinner Rides. And do we have a
busy schedule. We continue to listen to our members and will offer Thursday night dinner rides as well as Satur-
day dinner rides. We also have taken your suggestions you provided to us and have managed to get all the re-
quests on the upcoming calendar for the next 10 months. We will be having a barrel of fun. Keep your eye on
the section below that is marked “Mark Your Calendar”. I will try to keep all the notices here so you can see all
the fun in one place. But you will also find the events on the monthly calendars at the end of the newsletters. Get your bikes, trikes, and Harleys serviced and be ready to have some fun.
I am excited about another “first” accomplishment for Chapter N. We completed our application for Chapter
of the Year 2012. There will probably be other chapters who will have many more points than us so we might not
win Chapter of the Year, but we get special recognition just because we took the time to submit our application.
Thanks to all of you who participated in so many events that we were able to accumulate quite a few points. And
now—watch out District, we know where we need to put in more work and we are moving on up. Chapter N is all
about fun and the extra benefit from all that fun is a better chance to be Chapter of the Year. Go TEAM!!
Members are family to us. So let’s take just a moment to remember that some of our members are
having some difficult days. You know we have been missing Bernedette the last couple of meetings, as
well as Wes Youman. And Diane is spending a lot of time on the road these days. We don’t want to forget
about Jeanette. Keep them in your thoughts.
Here we go again having all that fun!!

Best of the Best—Monthly Gathering
This was our game competition. We called it “Suck It Up”. Members used a straw to suck up red hot
candies from one bowl to another. The one who sucked up more than the others was the winner.
Nolan, Jacob and Big O busy
sucking it up.
Does anything stick you as unfair?
Sorry Big O. The table was a lot
closer for Jacob and Nolan. You
think that had anything to do with
who won? Congratulations Nolan!
Everyone had fun with this
game. This was a team
event and the team was

Getting To Know You
Gold Wing Road Riders Association TN-N
Hello, my name is Billy Mullins. I am happy to provide this brief article about myself because I think this is
a great idea that will allow us to get to know more about each of our members in Chapter N. I would like to
share a little about my roots.
I was born in Pocahontas, Tennessee and grew up there. I later moved to Selmer, Tennessee and still live
there today. Before moving to Selmer, I lived in Chicago, Illinois. I am currently retired, but I was a self-
employed mechanic at Fisher Body Shop for forty-five years.
Over the years, I have owned a BSA, a Harley Davidson, and a Gold Wing motorcycle. I currently have a Gold
Wing Trike.
My favorite trip on my motorcycle was to the North Carolina Rally in Fletcher, North Carolina.
I joined GWRRA in December 1989 and am one of the founding members of Chapter N which was chartered
in 1989. Over the years as a member of Chapter N, I have held the positions of Historian, Assistant Chapter Di-
rector, and have been the chapter Educator.
I am married to Shirley.
Billy and Shirley Mullins are original
charter members of TN-N, joining the
chapter in 1989. Thank you both for your
years of dedication and service to TN-N.
Billy on his way to collect his prize from
the winning ticket.

How We Came About Owning a GOLDWING
By Gary Duren
Anna and I hadn’t been married very long when I bought a 125 Honda on/off road bike. It was fun to ride and
when we would get a chance we would ride it around home. One Sunday afternoon we were riding the back
roads to Anna’s parents’ house when I hit some loose gravel in a curve. I lost control and laid the bike down on
the blacktop. I still have a scar on my hip from road rash. Anna slid across the blacktop face first and if it had-
n’t been for the face shield, her face would have been messed up. Her arms and elbows were skinned up. We
both got back on the bike and rode home, but she would not ride with me anymore. Later I traded for a 1970
Honda SL 350 on/off road bike. When I was 25 I sold this bike to pay for our third child to be born. When my
boys were growing up and wanted a motorcycle, I always told them that the only way they were going to get one
was to buy their own.
Well, my youngest son bought a 1987 Honda Magna 700 after he grew up and left home. He brought it home
to show us and I rode it and then talked Anna into riding about 20 miles on it. She said it was the roughest
thing she had ever ridden. A few days later we went to a yard sale (one of our pastimes) where a man had two
Goldwings for sale. Anna kept eyeing the bikes and the man asked her if she wanted to ride with him so he
could show her how comfortable the bike was. I thought they were never coming back! We had never seen this
man before in our lives and had no idea who he was! I think they rode about 25 miles. Imagine my surprise
when Anna got off the bike and told me she wanted to buy it. I was shocked at how expensive it was and told
him we would think about it. Anna was sure she wanted a Goldwing, so we visited dealerships and called dealer-
ships looking for used Wings. They all were expensive. The guys at work thought I was crazy because my wife
wanted a motorcycle and I had not bought one. I finally told Anna if she would borrow the money that we could
get it. Do you know what she told me? She said “come sign the papers”. For those who don’t know, she works
for a bank. That is how we got our first Goldwing, a 1995 Aspencade, Sierra Pearl Green. We still have it and
still love to ride!
It was good to see Gary and Anna at the
monthly gathering. Gary and Anna, we
have missed those smiles.
This bike came
along after the
1995 Sierra Pearl
Green Aspencade.
I like this bike
Gary. This picture was taken after
Spring Fling 2012.
Wouldn’t you know it.
They came to have fun
and they did. Gary was
the winner of a special
prize—a handmade pen
made from deer antlers. Our newest member-
James Rosenthal
“Rosey” made them and
donated them for the
drawing.

All In The Family
Notes from the Youngest Gold Wingers
Just a small note from Hayley Seaton.
I think the ground hog was right; it is almost Spring. The weather is great. And I am getting a lot of practice
driving now. I drive to school and to church. I have not seen Pepaw since I got my license. Don’t get mad
Pepaw, I will come see you soon—when I need money. Ha-ha!!.
Here are some pictures that I thought reminded me of some of our members. Remember, it is all about hav-
ing fun!!
This would be like my Dad. I think this is me!
And this would remind us of our crazy
Jeff! (Pepaw made me do it Jeff!!) Have more FUN! See you
soon!! Hayley Seaton
And this would be Jacob!!

All In The Family
Notes from the Youngest Gold Wingers
Hey everybody. Hope you are doing ok. I am. I am still going to school and getting smarter, I think. I went
squirrel hunting with my Papa from Jackson. Why is it when squirrel season is in, you cannot see any but when
it is not hunting season, they throw nuts at you.
I found a picture that Hayley, Jake and I thought reminded us of one of our members. I hope we remember
this is all in fun and that I don’t make anybody mad. Submitted by Nolan.
Hey Tony how about this one?
Best of the Best for Nolan This was FUN!!! Once I got the hang of
it—there was no stopping me. One
minute. No problem. Way to go Nolan.
Your team just got an extra 100 points
for the Olympic competition.
My family. Jake, Uncle
Shannon, Pepaw and
Memaw.
When Jake and I are not competing against
each other, we are making up for time we
don’t get to see each other. Here we are just
talking while the meeting gets ready for
50/25/25.

News From Region N
For the past few weeks, we’ve been looking into the programs in Region N to identify areas that could use
some attention and possible tweaking. What we realized to be one issue seems to be an issue throughout
GWRRA - That being the reluctance of our members to step into positions of responsibility. There are as many
reasons and/or excuses as there are people. The most prominent reason being the perception that they are not
prepared or qualified. We know that feeling very well. A number of weeks ago we were faced with a decision. We
discussed and wrestled with it for quite a few restless nights. One in particular when I tossed and turned until
around 3:00 am, then decided to try to corral my scattered thoughts on a fresh word document to see if they’d
unscramble enough to make sense. I’ve done this before, which would usually end up with hitting the delete key
to clear the screen - and my brain, then go back to bed and sleep like a baby. On this special morning, after
about two pages of written ravings, I ended with a final thought or prayer. It was one last line that seemed to
give some peace of mind and a green light: “May the memory of my regrets be filled with attempts and failures,
rather than visions as seen from the sidelines”. We all have regrets - some thoughts of remorse for things we’ve
done, and some of empty memories of things we wish we’d done. I have to say, those unfinished dreams haunt
me more than the times I’ve at least given it my best shot. There’s a lot of fulfillment and satisfaction in going to
the plate, even if you do strike out.
So let me challenge you...when you’re presented with opportunities, consider going against the grain. Con-sider sending your fears for a ride. Not for me. Not for your District or Chapter Director. But for yourself and
for the scrapbook of memories you hope to create and treasure for the rest of your life. Give it a go.
Working for you,
Alan and Carolyn Little GWRRA Region N Director
