Nobles and Ladies, Thank you for again electing me as your

Recorder. It was my pleasure working withall you Nobles and Ladies last year and I’mlooking forward to more of the same this

year! Last year was great and this year is shaping up to be even betterfor our Shrine.

It saddens me to report that we had to suspend 222 members whoowed two years dues. A new policy is in place to retain Nobles who oweone year, and one year only. This should have been done quite sometime ago but with this new policy in force, it will allow us to focus our re-sources on those Nobles who need our immediate attention, giving thembetter Membership and Retention advice, more individual help or what-ever they need to get and stay active again.

Recorder’s Message...

Although the loss of any member, whether through demit or sus-pension, is felt by us all, there is a small upside to the suspensions –your Shrine no longer has to pay Imperial Per Capita on these Nobles,so our financial savings are noticeable. Of course, our Black Camellosses continue at a heartbreaking and alarming rate as we continueto lose some of our oldest, most active Nobles. Their loss will alwaysbe felt.

We have a new opportunity to join a Unit or Club, reenergize our-selves for a bright new Shrine year, begin Parading to let the publicknow who we are and what we do, and find friends and neighbors toinvite in joining us in the World’s Greatest Philanthropy.

Please help us get the word out – Every Shriner makes a difference.

Yours in the Faith, Jack M. Garrett, PP, Recorder

What a ride! Coffee and doughnuts at the Temple supplied by GeorgeMather and Lady Dorothy and Hut Hutson and Lady Sandi.

Kickstands went up at 10 o’clock. The ElZaribah Motorcycle Unit’s 2012 New Year’sDay Ride left the Temple with 78 bikes instaggered doubles formation. We headedsouth on a warm day. A quick pit stop in Mari-copa had us rolling into a strip mall parkinglot. A BMW bike club stood with their mouthsopen as bike after bike of cruisers came into the lot. Some more hand-shaking and backslapping and we were off to the Casa Grande ElksLodge for a more serious pit stop.

An hour later many clothes were shed as we mounted up for the nextleg. On to the Eloy airport where we saw people jumping out of perfectlygood airplanes. (And folks call us nuts for riding on 2 wheels…) It wasbusy when we arrived and the wait for a meal was an hour and a half. Aquick bend of the elbow and my guest and I were outta there.

We gassed up at the Indian Casino and ate a good meal at the restau-rant. It was windy but witha full belly and tank, wewere content to blast northin the HOV lane to the farwest side of the Valley. Allin all, it was a very goodride. Even with all theRICE that leaked onto theparking lots… Little Jim

Legion of honor...

The Greeters in the Fiesta Bowl Parade in their Caddy convertible

Hopefully, all reading this had a wonderful Christmas and started theNew Year on a high note full of promise and excitement.

As promised in my last article, I’ll begin with our 2012 Greeters Offi-cers: Pres. Chuck Richards was unanimously elected. Chuck will proba-bly best be remembered for practically single-handedly leading therenovation and return of the Caddy convertible Greeter Mobile. I’m sure

his efforts in this played a great part in hisbeing named 2011 Greeter Of The Year,an honor he richly deserved.

Chuck, although not familiar to some,is by no means a new Greeter. In fact, hismembership goes way back to the times

when there were so many active Greeters the Caddy couldn’t hold themall and many were forced to march alongside during Parades. Due tohealth reasons, Chuck was forced to withdraw from being heavily involvedin Unit activities, but he’s back and I’m sure we can expect to see manynew and exciting things happening with him at the helm.

1st VP Al Shattuck is one of our newest members, but Al’s certainly notnew to the Shrine. I’m sure he’ll be calling upon his experience in the or-ganization to assist our Pres. whenever needed.

Gregg Curry was re-elected Sec/Treas. and will no doubt continue toserve the Unit in good fashion.

Dec. 9th witnessed a gathering of Temple Guard and Greeters Unitmembers and their Ladies in the Fiesta Room for a Joint Christmas Partyand Greeters OV. We all ate very well, drank heartily, of course none toexcess, and had a wonderful time.

The Fiesta Bowl Parade was a smashing good time, if the size of thecrowd was any indicator. We really gave our Greeter mobile a workout. Not only was the “old girl” loaded with Greeters for the Parade, she“starred” for more than one camera shot on national television.

I was intending to use this paragraph to say “Bye” and end my time asScribe, however our new Pres. asked me to continue doing my “thing”during his year and, of course, I accepted. So…….till next month.

Howdy Noble Partners! Well, here we are in another new year. Hopey’all had a great Holiday season.

The Mounted Patrol had another wonderfulChristmas Party. We also saddled up the poniesand rode with our brothers in the Fiesta Bowl Pa-rade. It was the first time in a lot of years we’ve beenable to do that. We had a good turn out from theUnit with a perfect day for a Parade. Hope y’all gotto see it!

This year we’re under the leadership of NoblePaul Sauerbrey. He and his Officers are really ex-cited about this year. They’ve got a lot planned for our Unit and the wayit looks, we should have another meaningful and fun filled year doingprojects, Rides, Parades, and Round Ups.

Mounted Patrol...

Happy New Year everybody. The Oriental Band had its biggest par-ticipation of the year at the Fiesta Bowl Parade –7 people on the float, which included 2 guests(thanks John and Sanford)! We were dressed inour Ceremonial uniforms and looking good (exceptfor that flashy musette player in the green shirt andgold pants).

The float was rocking the entire Parade routeand we got excellent coverage from the ABC-15camera crew. You can check out the TV coverage

on http://www.abc15.com and click on the Fiesta Bowl Parade, the Shrineis in the last 2 video clips (7 & 8).

In addition to the Fiesta Bowl Parade, this was our second time per-forming in the Annual Christmas/Holiday Concert and Potluck with theDrum and Bugle Corp. This year was even bigger than last year as thecrowd seems to get bigger and more appreciative (they throw moneywhile we play!).

We look forward to participating in as many Parades as possible in2012. SC

Transportation unit at the APS Electric Light Parade

Here we are at the start of another great run for our Unit. This past yearyou all surpassed anything that’s ever beendone – now that’s great team work!

We have a full schedule of sanctioned Pa-rades to attend this year and I’m sure we’ll asalways be there in full attire.

It’s my understanding the 2 rigs that madethe Light Parades were a blast – not only didthey make one, but they made a total of three! Great job!

While on the subject of rigs, we have a Brother in Payson wanting tosell his, so if you have the desire to be a truck driver again, call for infor-mation. We’d love to see it in the fleet.

As always, the Fiesta Bowl Parade was a hit. The weather was great(not like last year) but we were short Brother Tom… seems he fell out ofhis tree and hurt himself. You can’t drink beer and climb in trees, Tom!

Let’s all welcome Avery from Payson to the clan. He secured his ve-hicle from Ted and it will be great to see that yellow truck back in the Unitonce again, along with Ray’s car. Welcome to the Unit! Sincerely, John Hamilton

Leaders and Followers

As Potentate, I have an opportunity to share with Nobles and their

family things I’ve learned as a volunteer, called Comments. In each

of the remaining 7 editions of the Tales, I’ll have Comments on the

life and works of a volunteer.

We spend much time in our schools teaching how to lead and not

follow. If we all learned our lessons and paid attention, we’d all be

generals, and in fact that’s often how we behave. Following is about

cohesive direction versus anarchy. If we were all leaders, we’d have

a nation of one, sovereign unto ourselves. We wouldn’t be leaders,

as there’d be no followers – it’s the default state of opinioned loners.

Leaders and followers can’t exist without one another. Further,

every leader is also a follower as well, since all followers have lead-

ership responsibilities. Let me explain.

As leader, I’m expected to follow the general will of the member-

ship, not one specific group or person’s will. I’ve been elected by all

the members and given this opportunity to lead. Since my responsi-

bility is to both my office and the membership at large, I must dis-

charge these overlapping responsibilities to the best of my abilities.

I have a Divan, also elected by the membership at large. While

they each have their own specific areas of leadership responsibili-

ties, they also have a duty of following, not only me but also the

member’s wishes. It’s not a case of blind submission to the Poten-

tate. It’s an obligation to follow the Potentate’s lead and support him

as long as his lead isn’t materially adverse to the membership.

Committee chairmen have a duty to follow the Divan’s lead, to

support them in their efforts to benefit the Shrine and its members.

The Unit chairmen are leaders of their respective groups, required to

muster the efforts of their group’s members to fulfill the needs and

obligations of the Divan and the membership at large.

Members have the responsibility to lead, both by word and deed,

each and every other member - no matter their station in Shrinedom

or life. Members also have a responsibility of loyalty - to their Units,

the Divan and yes, even to the Potentate, no matter who he may be.

If there’s a disagreement, dislike or upset, it’s the duty of the

Noble to communicate the issue to that Unit, the Divan or to the Po-

tentate. Maybe things can be done to fix the problem, maybe it can’t

be fixed, or fixed to the member’s satisfaction. Upsets are next

month’s Comment.

What can’t be done in any organization is quitting, especially in

an organization that relies wholly upon the goodness and gifts of

time, effort and treasury of its members. Remember, the goodness

and gifts bestowed on so many Shriner children through the time

and treasury of this organization, are life altering for so many.

How do leaders and followers quit?

We quit when we all try to be generals.

We quit by refusing to support our leaders.

We quit when we ignore the wishes of our followers.

We quit by having to be right.

We quit by being selfish and withdrawing.

Please understand that as leaders, we must lead and as follow-

ers, we must follow. If you see me holding the reins of a camel in

one hand, expect to find a shovel in the other, to deal with the camel

I’m following, and I trust the leader of the camel behind me will also

be equipped with a shovel.

Let’s continue to be the leaders we are and continue to do the

good we’ve done so well for so long. Let our Shrine be the leader for

generations of Nobles who will follow our examples and lead us into

the future.

...Welcome Home, Lucky...Welcome Home Keith “Lucky” Seplak

and the 422nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion of the AZ Army National Guard

Hundreds of family members and friends cheered and waved balloons,American flags and homemade “Welcome home” posters as 100 AZ soldiersreturned Sunday from a year’s deployment in war-ravaged Afghanistan. Thehappy homecoming, marked by hugs, smiles and tears, occurred in a soar-ing National Guard airplane-maintenance hangar south of Phoenix Sky Har-bor International Airport after a patient wait for the troops’ flight from its stopin Fort Dix, N.J. It was the return of the Casa Grande-based A Company ofthe 422nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion of the Arizona Army National Guard.

For those who couldn’t attend, it was simply awesome. Picture your Po-tentate, Past Potentates, Divan Members, and other Shriners (Ladies in-cluded), joining forces with the Patriot Guard Riders to make a Living flag line100 strong.

As the plane containing our men and women of the 422nd approached thehangar, all the Bikes formed in an “Honor Lane,” came to life, accompaniedby the lights and sirens of the support vehicles. The ramp was placed, thedoor opened, and 100 men and women deplaned.

Once formed up, they dropped their packs as we all cheered. The hangerdoors slowly opened, revealing a sea of fellow soldiers, families and friends.

As our Brother and sisters moved to embrace loved ones, the escort mem-bers withdrew a respectful distance to allow them a little elbowroom. The“Controlled Chaos,” tears, cheers and the flashing of cameras made for amemorable experience.

Noble Keith “Lucky The Clown” Seplak was reunited with his Lady Teresa, family and friends. Welcome Home to you, Lucky!

What a great Day. What Great People. God Bless America! Tom Sheldon

I ask all to remember the El Zaribah Hospital Patient TransportationFund as the New Year begins. ...Noble of the Month, Shriner of the year & Fiesta Real...

Noble of the Month - Don HettervikNoble of the Month for November 2011. A

graduate of Fresno State University, Don’s alsoan Army Vietnam Veteran. He’s retired from theDepartment of Interior and the Camp PendletonFire Department.

Don’s been married to his lovely wife Shirleyfor 40 years and she says he’s still the love ofher life. He currently volunteers for the State ofArizona Ombudsmen.

Don’s goal in life was to become a Shriner. He joined Yuma Lodge #17 in Yuma and be-came a Shriner on March 5, 2005, right here at El Zaribah. He’s a member ofthe Yuma Shrine Club, Shriner Diners, Legion of Honor and the Yuma Rene-gades.

Don and Shirley have helped tremendously over the past few years in theEl Zaribah Hospitality Rooms - no matter where they were in the state. WhenI hear some folks say it’s too far to drive to Show Low for a Parade, I thoughtit was remarkable to see that they’d driven all the way from Yuma, a 6-hourdrive, just to work the Hospitality Room.

Noble of the Month...

This is YOUR magazine. All Units, Shrine Clubs and associated groupsare encouraged to have articles in each issue. Here are a few easy guide-lines following the KISS principle (Keep It Short, Simple).

* Check your facts. Always be positive of your facts.* The deadline is carved in stone. Everything MUST be in our hands no

later than the end of the first week of the month prior to publication. NO EX-CEPTIONS.

* You may hand deliver, mail, fax or e-mail articles and photos to us.* If using e-mail, copy the article directly into the body of the e-mail. Send

photos as JPG attachments. If you need help with this, just call - we can walkyou through it.

* Typed copy is to use caps AND lower case. * Please limit your monthly articles to approximately 250 words. This will

ensure all Units and Clubs receive the space they deserve as well as givingour advertisers the space they’ve paid for.

* The Editor reserves the right to edit any article for length or content. Per-sonal agendas will not knowingly be printed.

* Submissions with dates will be edited for tense. If the event has alreadyoccurred, it will be rewritten to indicate past tense.

* Minutes of meetings are not considered apropos for this publication.Example: This article contains 228 words.

Notice To scribes...

The following quote is from an email I received from one ofour Nobles. It’s difficult to give many compliments better thanthese from one of his Brother Nobles.

“Honestly, I’m embarrassed I haven’t written something aboutthis Shriner before. It goes without saying how much time he’s putinto the Shrine at Shrine events, but often his time is missed or notrecorded for the time he puts in (in the name of the El Zaribah ShrineClowns).

“Doug “BB” Fry has madeevery Stated Meeting, just aboutevery Shrine event (often ingrease), every Circus show, andmany Shrine sanctioned Parades. The part that many wouldn’t knowabout is how he shows up to placeslike the Army National Guard totie balloons and face paint, City ofPeoria for the Sept. 11th event, andmany other non-Shrine eventsspreading the word of El Zaribahand Shrine as a whole.

“I truly don’t think BB’s ever looked for a pat on the back or anyrecognition for himself, but he does aspire to have people know thegood work our Temple and the Clown Unit does for the community. Ihope you can find it in your heart to award a man who truly deservesto be Shriner of the Month (if not Shriner of the Year).“

Born in 1956, Doug was raised a military brat as his fatherwas in the US Air Force. He’s been a member of Paradise Val-ley Lodge #61 since 1996, is also a member of Scottish Rite andjoined El Zaribah on May 16, 1998. Just like the email says, hegives so much of his time to El Zaribah and the children. Whatthe email didn’t mention was all his appearances at the Hospi-

2011 Shriner of The YeAr - Doug frY tal Clinics and how easy it is for him to work with the childrenand make them laugh. Doug’s also worked tirelessly with theShriners Golf Classic and Night of the Child committees.

He joined the Clown Unit in the fall of 1998, just before hewas nearly killed in an auto accident. His fellow Clowns toldhim his Clown name should be the Bionic Bozo since he has somuch titanium in his body holding his bones together. Dougthought that was too hard for the kids to handle, so he shortenedit to “BB Clown.”

Married to Roberta for 34 years, their son Joshua is a ChiefPetty Officer in the US Navy on the Trident Sub USS Nevada andhas two sons, Sullivan and Donovan. Doug and Roberta’s sonPatrick is a sophomore at Arizona Christian University. Doug’sa realtor with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty.
