LAS Executive Meeting In a new fashion, the executive meetings will now be held at the Co-op meeting room (where we previously held our regular meetings simply to accommodate large number of people who now participate at the executive meetings. Remember, you do not need to be a member of the executive to attend these meetings. At the meeting Ron Bishop gave an update on the status of the T-shirts. These will be ready for purchase at our next regular meeting in February. Please note that there will be a change to the jar show rules (a copy of the new jar show rules (Page 9) of this newsletter). With regards to Rule #4, on a motion by Dorothy Reimer and seconded by Doug Henricks, there can only be one fish per “jar” if you are entering your fish in the jar show for judging. The motion was pass by majority vote. The only exception to this rule is when you are entering the “Family” class. The Family class is specifically scheduled for our April competition. On another note, there was also extensive discussion regarding the awards that will be given out for the annual show in the fall. On a motion by Dorothy Reimer, seconded by Chris Henricks, we will offer cash prizes in lieu of rosettes at the annual show. The motion was passed. Steven Gregson will form a small sub committee to review recommendations for the cash distribution. Information about the upcoming CAOAC convention is available on our website. The convention brochure listing the speakers and events can be downloaded from there or you can visit the CAOAC website.

President’s Message What a miserable night we had for the last meeting. All that snow with the wind blowing it around. But the night was saved by having our guest speakers do an entertaining presentation. We had Brian and Susan Glazier do a talk on Killie Fish. The talk on Killie Fish was very informative and made it look very easy to keep and raise these little fish. What a great crowd we had at this meeting. We had over thirty people at this event .

We all saw the new 2009 membership card that the store owners and advertisers will now be honouring instead of last years card. Also we are going back to JP2 for February.

We have been in contact with the T- shirt guy to supply us with new shirts with the club info on them. If all goes right we will have them for the next meeting.

The fish show for February will be Gouramis and Paradise fish and the Open Class also the Plant Class. A change was made to the jar show rules to only one fish in the jar to be shown. If there are two fish in the jar then one fish will have to be removed and put in a bag or it can be entered in the jar show in a separate jar. The auction will be there as always.

I have heard a lot of good comments from the advertisers that they are seeing London Aquaria Society cards lot more this year and that makes them happy to see they are getting the support from the members, so don’t be afraid to show that card and also introduce yourself to the shop owners.

See their ads in the bulletin.

I wish everybody all the best in their Valentine adventure.

CAOAC Meeting February 8th , 2009 ***************************************** The monthly meeting of CAOAC was held in Waterdown on February 8th and the CAOAC Convention meeting was held immediately following the CAOAC meeting. The following clubs were represented at the CAOAC meeting. London Aquaria Society, St. Catharines & Area Aquarium Society, Sarnia Aquarium Society, Cambridge District Aquarium Society, Kitchener Waterloo Aquarium Society, Hamilton & District Aquarium Society. The treasurer reported a working balance at the beginning of the meeting as $5,493.07 The membership form has been received from the club including payment of membership fee, insurance, and show sanctioning fee for 2009. The membership of the LAS was accepted and 19 other clubs as well as one private member. The BAP and AHAP award submissions were due at today’s meeting. Breeders Directory submissions were received by Tom & Pat Bridges from Kitchener, Hamilton, Sarnia, and Durham. How about our club. I know there have been some breedings and they can be submitted at any time of the year. If it is easier to do them as they are received, they can be submitted every month. The fish rescue program has the two extra large I. D. Sharks available for adoption. They are in excess of 24” in length. If you are interested call Tony Bernard. The Durham Region Aquarium Society will hold their annual awards banquet on February 14th and the guest speaker will be Jeff Cardwell. CAOAC Convention *********************** CAOAC is in the final stages of having PayPal ready and it should be operating within a week. It will allow you to purchase convention tickets, sponsor show classes and any other reason you might have to pay money to CAOAC. It should help to make it easier for everyone. The CAOAC Convention site should have all the information that is current soon and the Convention booklets and Convention information cards have been given to Ron Bishop and will be available to be picked up at the meeting this week. There will be a “SARAH SALE” at the convention and Sarah Langthorne is asking for any donations of any kind (not necessarily fish related). We have arranged to hold a Native Fish collecting trip on Friday May 15th starting at 11:00 am at the start of the convention. Several of the speakers are arriving to the Convention early in order to participate in that collecting trip. We have decided to have a Sunday evening event (after the convention is over) and it is not included in the convention ticket price. It will be open to anyone wishing to attend and the cost is $10.00 per person. It will be an evening of eating and talking fish. We are expecting that all of the speakers will be departing on Monday so they will all be in attendance at this event. Riccia fluitans (Crystalwort)

by Lynn McMullen London Aquaria Society, Ontario, Canada. October 2001

Aquarticles

One of the groups of aquatic plants which is frequently overlooked and under-rated are the floating plants. There are a surprising number from which to choose, with a variety of shapes and sizes as well. The fact that a plant is referred to most commonly as “floating” doesn’t automatically mean that it must remain forever on the water surface, or that it will necessarily thrive best there. This fact alone has been more than amply demonstrated by renowned aquarium photographer, Takashi Amano, who has created and photographed his carefully crafted “aquascapes” and he has shown the world with his resulting books just how lush, vivid and heart-stoppingly beautiful a well-planted aquarium can be. One of Amano’s favorite tools for perfecting these aquascapes is a floating plant called Riccia fluitans, more commonly known as Crystalwort. Please note that Amano’s use of this plant is almost NEVER as a floating mass at the water surface.

Riccia fluitans is an enticingly versatile water plant, and joy of joys, it is not usually labor intensive in terms of care and maintenance. Generally, this plant can be found almost worldwide in the wild. When being kept in an aquarium, it is considered very easy to maintain and is very suitable for beginners to the hobby of keeping aquatic plants. It has a very wide tolerance to water conditions, doing well in medium soft to very hard water, at a pH from 6.0 to 8.0. The temperature can vary between 15 degrees C to 30 degrees C. These factors make the plant almost invaluable in that it can be kept together with almost any variety of freshwater fish that a hobbyist chooses.

This plant looks like clusters of thick, bright green threads, all of which are quite short. They appear to be clumped together and when left to grow naturally, and unimpeded by any training or pruning, they will form a roughly spherical (ball-like) shape which has been very slightly flattened.

Riccia fluitans does not develop a root structure, but it is capable of anchoring itself over time to a surface. When a clump is small and thin, it will float just below the surface of the water, barring any current which would push it around, but as the mass thickens and grows, it will tend to sink. When it comes into contact with a surface for an extended time period, (days or weeks), new growth may anchor it there. This particular trait can be used to good advantage by placing a mass of Riccia fluitans against the chosen surface such as driftwood, or rock and then fastening the Riccia to the surface by wrapping repeatedly with thin thread. After a surprisingly short time,(as little as two weeks), the thread will no longer be visible, having been grown over with new growth from the plant. The resulting effect is much like a beautifully cultured lawn or a rich bed of luxuriant moss on a rock. If desired, the thread can then be cut away, leaving the Riccia firmly anchored to the item.

As a medium for raising very small fry, it is difficult to choose a better floating plant than Riccia fluitans. It seems less likely to trap both small and large fishes, probably because each thready portion is quite short by itself. The result seems to be less inclination to form a tightly tangled mass which may become impenetrable to fish, unlike Java Moss for example. Riccia fluitans is more easily “shouldered aside” and a fish can make its way in or out relatively easily, but the mass still provides enough cover and camouflage that small fry can evade predators. A small portion of Riccia fluitans could be anchored to a tall piece of driftwood with a small portion of it teased out so that a loosely trailing mass results. This forms a perfect refuge for small fry that might otherwise be eaten by larger fish. It might be worth trying especially in a tank where breeding fish tend to be unrepentant cannibals to their own fry when the fry become free-swimming.

It should be noted that although this plant is easy to grow and propagate, and that even if it tolerates an enormous range of water, light and temperature requirements, Riccia fluitans is not to be mistaken as a TOUGH plant - it is still fairly tender. Should one try to grow a beautiful mass in a tank filled with fish that love vegetable matter, whether it be algae or plants, Riccia fluitans is in NO way resistant!! It may well be the first item chosen to be eaten. Therefore, do not try to cultivate it in quantities in a tank filled with plecostomus and then wonder why the growth rate is non-existent.

All in all, this plant has been sadly overlooked, especially considering its many wonderful qualities and uses. A plant that can be so beautiful in so many different ways, with so few disadvantages (all of which can be easily controlled), should receive more attention and be more common in planted aquariums than it is.

3. Show Categories continued: - the plant category is always open to all types - open fish category means any type of fish or can be entered - other fish categories are of a certain type of fish for those months - family category means both parents and 6 to10 fry (fry no more than 4 months old) are judged as a group and compared to other families, families may only be entered in April 4. Number of Fish: - only one fish is allowed in one jar in any category (other than the family category in April) - if more than one fish is found in a jar there are two choices: 1) the fish must be separated so that only one fish is found in each jar to be entered or 2) the jar with multiple fish will not be judged 5. Fish Criteria: - fish are judged according to size, colour, fins, disposition, condition and overall appearance - fish showing signs of disease may be disqualified 6. Containers: - fish and plants should be displayed in: small aquaria, square gallon jars or flat-sided drum fish bowls - round jars or round fish bowls should not be used because the round glass distorts the shape of the fish or plant - no gravel or backgrounds are permitted in fish display tanks 7. Plants Criteria: - the plants category is always “open” which means any type of water plant can be entered - gravel or attachment substrate (i.e., flower pot or driftwood) are allowed in the plants category only - see rule number 6 above for appropriately shaped containers 8. Entry Fee: - a fee of 25 cents per entry is required to help cover the cost of the ribbons 9. Registration times and results: - entries should be registered with the Jar Show Chairman (Sarah Lee) by 7:30 pm or the start of the program on the night of the monthly meeting - results of the jar show will be announced before the end of every monthly meeting - at the June meeting: - an annual award will be presented to the member who accumulates the highest number of points in the fish competition - a separate award will be presented to the member with the highest number of points in the plant competition
