President’s MessageFebruary 2009

Details are slowly coming together for the October 2009 concert, which will be held at Mt. Hood Community College. Keep your membership up to date so you will receive future mailings. Also check the code on your mailing label, and send in your membership fee if it is time!

I hope you and your celli survived the Big Winter we’ve had (so far). Take care as you go out to rehearsals and concerts. See the article on caring for your cello (thanks to David Kerr Violins).

The Bridge & Bow newsletter is published in fall, winter, and spring. Would YOU consider volunteering to become the newsletter coordinator? We have an established team of editors and template for the newsletter. The coordinator would plan content for upcoming issues, solicit articles from our membership, and perhaps arrange for interviews or ongoing contributions from established writers. If you can spend a few days three times a year on this task, the whole membership would profit. I would like the B&B to be a good resource for our community. Tips for Cello Care in WinterIt’s a winter experience most string players share: you unpack your instrument to find that one, two, or maybe all of your pegs have sprung loose and your strings are draped pitifully across your bridge.

Winter can be a trying time for string players, but remember that most instruments safely adjust on their own to Oregon’s relatively moderate seasons. And keep in mind that our shop very rarely sees damage caused by cold or humidity change. Accidents and heat are much more common culprits.

Because violin family instruments are not sealed, they adjust to variations in humidity as moisture enters and leaves the wood. The main goal is to protect your instrument from sudden changes so it can adjust gradually.

Expect slipping or sticky pegs. Even perfectly fitting pegs slip or stick as they contract and expand with humidity changes. Use a combination of chalk (for slipping) and peg dope (for sticking). If your bridge or sound post falls over, bring your instrument to a violin shop.

Prevent seam openings and cracks by keeping a hygrometer in your home. If humidity dips below 30 percent, add moisture to the air—by boiling water in a teakettle, for example. Leave your instrument in its case for a while after carrying it outside on a particularly cold or dry day, and keep it in its case when not in use. We usually do not recommend using Dampits, which can leak water and prevent your instrument from naturally adjusting to shifts in climate.

Expect some tonal changes. If your instrument sounds different in varying climate conditions, give it a week or two. If the tone does not return, visit a violin shop to consider a sound post adjustment and to check for open seams. If you hear a buzz or rattle when playing, take your instrument to a shop to be checked for open seams.

Keep an eye on your bow as well. Bow hair shortens as the

air dries. If the bow is pulled taught even when loosened, unscrew the button as far as possible to relieve tension.

Check your insurance. Ask for “all risk” coverage that would include repairs.

Be patient and remember that fine old instruments have lasted hundreds of winters and only improved with age.

Here’s the member feedback to my call for your suggestions on good summer music programs. Since many of them fill up and require applications sooner than later, here is some helpful information to assist you in your search.

Thanks, everybody!

FOR STUDENTSGREENWOOD MUSIC CAMPRecommended by Justin Kagan, OCS board member; cellist with the Oregon Symphony www.greenwoodmusiccamp.org/

GREEN MOUNT CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALRecommended by Steve Pologe, Professor of Cello at the University of Oregon [email protected]“It is held at the beautiful University of Vermont Campus in Burlington, and it lasts four weeks. Students practice daily from 8 am to noon, have chamber music rehearsals and lessons every afternoon, and frequent concerts and masterclasses in the evenings. There is recreation and rest time every day from 4 to 6 pm. During the four-week session, the students get six private cello lessons, plus six chamber ensemble coachings and weekly performance classes. It is another excellent option and less expensive than most summer camps.

The website is www.uvm.org/gmcmf. A number of Oregon students have attended this camp the past few years, and I am happy to put anyone interested in learning more in touch with some recent alumni.”

MEADOWMOUNTRecommended by Steve Pologe, Professor of Cello at the University of Oregon [email protected]“This is a great opportunity to study with Hans Jorgen Jensen, Professor of Cello at Northwestern University.”www.meadowmount.com/about.shtml

BRITT INSTITE (BRITT MUSIC FESTIVAL) STRING QUARTET ACADEMYRecommended by OCS member Kerstin McGaughey“The two-week program was quite small (I think we were somewhere around twenty students), and every student was put into a chamber group that worked together for both weeks (each week with a different piece). We were tutored at the time by the Cavani String Quartet, amazing women who had quite a natural talent to teach. Today I understand the Arianna Quartet leads the program. The days filled with rehearsals and master classes, evenings with concerts and other events, and even the afternoon breaks (including water fights with the Cavani members!)—all were incredible learning experiences. This small, relaxed camp was an experience I recommend to any student, from those destined for the conservatory to others, like me, who have decided to make music a wonderful hobby.”www.brittfest.org/stringquartet

Cellists Wanted!A MESSAGE FROM CONDUCTOR SEAN PAUL MILLS:

Greetings!I am guest conducting the Mt. Hood Pops Orchestra on Mother’s Day and, while attending their board meeting last week, discovered that they are conspicuously short on cellists! They would absolutely love to have a few more players (strings in general) join the ensemble. We will begin rehearsals in mid- to late-March, with the repertoire including Mozart’s Impresario Overture, Dvorak’s American Suite, Op. 98b, and several student/youth soloists in works TBA. It will be a fun and challenging concert.Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!
