Fountain of Life – 5 Year Plan
The truck was in mud to its axles. Three lumberjacks sat in stony
silence in the cab. There they were, stuck in the woods on their
way to the cutting site. The first man slammed the steering wheel,
cursed, and stormed out of the truck. The second thought the
early morning woods inviting, and said he'd just crawl under a
pine to nap until someone came along to pull them out. The third
man, left alone, grabbed an axe and a saw and set about cutting
wood to slide under the wheels. Within an hour he managed to
pull the truck out of its muddy bath and they got on their way.
We can choose how we respond to an obstacle. As with the three
men, our response may be to curse and give up, to sit back and
wait for someone else to help us, or to set to work fearlessly to try
to overcome. The event itself isn't important; but how we
approach it will make the difference. (Source Unknown)
With that in mind, I wish to say thank you to those who were
able to participate in the 5 Year Planning Meeting held on
Saturday the 18th. I know there were other activities going on
that day that kept many of you from attending, but take heart
there will be more opportunities in coming weeks to share your
ideas. Once again to those present thank you for your candid
remarks, and willingness to look at past history and present
problems and opportunities. Your comments reflected a
willingness to look beyond your own preferences to ask the
question, “where is God leading us.” In addition, I saw a
willingness by the group to share shortcomings without being
critical or pointing fingers. I truly believe that with that
evangelical spirit and the Lord’s Blessing the formation of a 5
Year plan; though challenging will result in a God pleasing result
for the congregation. Thank you for letting me be a part of this
process. Pastor Joe Jones
5-Year Plan – Current Status and General Process
Board of Administration members and the Elders met last
Tuesday night and together began the process of selecting people
to the 5-Year Plan Group that will be charged with developing a
first draft of a 5-Year Plan for FOL. The process and time frame
envisioned is this:
February, Weeks 1 & 2: An Interview Committee will
invite and interview people who have either been
identified by the B of A and Elders, or have expressed
or will express an interest in participating in the 5-Year
Plan process. We are first looking for people who are
spiritual, practical, and are passionate for our FOL
ministry. We will also be striving for a diverse
demographic cross section of the congregation. Other
considerations will be explored in the interview.
February, Weeks 3 & 4: Selection of the 5-Year Plan
Group.
March and April: 5-Year Plan Group will identify the
primary general paths available to FOL and gather any
supporting data and analysis. At the same time,
congregational attitudes toward these primary paths
will be sought and monitored in an attempt to gain
consensus regarding each of the primary paths. This
may be done a number of ways: focus groups, email,
increased communication via Ripples and post-service
announcements, and one-on-one conversations. This
two-month period is key. Consensus is the goal. Frank
and honest discussion will be required. Dealing with
each other in love and compassion is paramount.
Some of the primary paths may be hard to talk about,
but they must be honestly evaluated nonetheless.
May, Week 1 or 2: The primary paths or options will
be formally presented to the congregation and
discussed. By this time the congregation should be well
-informed and familiar with all the primary options,
and consensus already arrived at.
May, Week 3 or 4: The congregation will vote on
which primary path or option to take.
June and July: Depending on which path is chosen, a
new or slightly modified 5-Year Plan Group may need
to be chosen. Regardless, a final first draft of the 5-
Year Plan will be developed and presented to the Board
of Administration.
August, Weeks 1 & 2: The Board of Administration
will review, make any desired adjustments.
August, Weeks 3 & 4: The Board of Administration
will present one or several options within the general
path chosen by the congregation back in May.
September, Week 1 or 2: The congregation will vote
on the final 5-Year Plan.

(5-Year Plan continued from Page 1)
2021 and beyond: Mid-year sometime, the Board of
Administration and the Elders should review the
progress of the 5-Year Plan, considering any situational
changes that may have occurred. A revised 5-Year Plan
will then be presented to the congregation. This should
be an annual occurrence.
We need your prayers. Consensus can be a very hard thing to
achieve. Pray that the Holy Spirit guides each and every one of
us to the center of His will. With God all things are possible.

February 2 – Presentation of our Lord &
Purification of Mary/Candlemas
Luke 2:24 – “… and to offer a sacrifice
according to what is said in the Law of the
Lord, ‘a pair of turtledoves, or two young
pigeons.’ ” Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God
gives us the pattern of proportional giving. If you look at
Leviticus 12, you’ll see that the sacrifice for purification is either
a lamb or this pair of birds if the family had no means to buy a
lamb. God calls us to give in proportion to how He has blessed
us, and, of course, Jesus sets the pattern by giving not only a
portion but His all.
Lectionary Summary (2 February 2020)
1 Samuel 1:21–28
Hebrews 2:14–18
Luke 2:22–32 (33–40)
God Gives the Gift of a Child to Destroy Death
The Lord opened the barren womb of Hannah and gave her the
gift of the son for whom she prayed, and in grateful response she
presented and gave the child, Samuel, to the Lord’s service. “As
long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD” (1 Sam. 2:28). So, too, did
Mary and Joseph present the Child promised from the fall, born
of a virgin’s womb. The true offering wasn’t the turtledoves or
young pigeons. It was the Child they carried. This Child has
come to “destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong
slavery” (Heb. 2:14b–15). Set free by His advent in our flesh and
the promise of what He would do “in the service of God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the people” (Heb. 2:17b), Simeon and
Anna rejoiced, and we with them, for we know that we, too, can
face death unafraid and “depart in peace” (Luke 2:29) when our
time comes.

Women’s Bible Study:
Ladies of FOL,
We realize it's been a month since our last meeting. We have
been studying Romans and had discussed continuing Romans
Part II. During our hiatus, many of us joined the Thursday morn-
ing group run by Pastor Palmer. What a joyful opportunity to
learn so much! However, the small women's group offers other
opportunities to share issues specific to women and how we can
use God's Word for guidance.
If any ladies would be interested in continuing or joining a
small group bible study during the week, please respond to this
invitation by contacting Christie Young at (520)749-3576 or
email [email protected]. Blessings to all!

"Porcupines ...we all live with them!"
Seems timely that we think about our own capacity to create
our attitudes and emotions, as well as our actions. If we choose
to, we can create inner peace despite difficult outer
circumstances. We can even prevent unnecessary suffering. Too
often we allow our quills of judgment to turn inwards and pierce
ourselves. When we make ourselves angry at others who prick us
by their words or actions, we need to reconsider that for
ourselves. We need to be calm and stabilize ourselves and not
take it too personally.
The last few weeks in the Ripples we have tried to think/
rethink how important it is to practice kindness, compassion,
service and unconditional acceptance of others. We reinforce
that in ourselves when we practice it on others. Psychologist
Albert Ellis has long taught that no one upsets us "unless we
allow them to." Instead we can choose to think rationally, feel
calm, and act with consideration, kindness, and empathy. Even
if the Porcupine-acting person who we are dealing with resists
our efforts to be kind, our open-hearted approach will not be
wasted. Every time we practice kindness, compassion, and
unconditional acceptance of others, we are reinforcing it within
and for ourselves.
Next week in more detail (defining porcupines in our lives) and
looking at 45 techniques to better serve others:
Set a good example
Don't be Dismissive
Don't try to win
Be persistent and consistent
Other people are a challenge to us but other people improve
us. Other people make us better human beings.
Victor Hugo: "A supreme happiness of life is the conviction
that we are loved--loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of
ourselves."
