February 18, 2018 - The First Sunday of Lent
Why do we always go to the desert? We see this
example in Scripture time and time again. The
Israelites wandered in the desert. King David and
prophets were driven into the wilderness. And
now Jesus is in the same place. Lent after Lent,
we too are invited into a barren, desolate place.
Why do we always go to the desert?
Throughout Scripture, the desert is a place of
testing. It's also a place of hiding and withdrawal.
In the Old Testament, David fled into the wilder-
ness to hide from Saul, Elijah from Jezebel, and
Jonah from God! In other words, the desert is a
place of "retreat." In Christian circles, we use the
word to describe a spiritual weekend away. But its
meaning comes from warfare, as we well know.
To retreat means to draw back, to separate one-
self from the fighting. Of course, a military retreat
brings its own kind of "battle" -- the internal as-
sessment of why the fighting went so poorly.
As we enter into this Lenten season, we are in-
vited to retreat into the desert with Jesus. Attend-
ing a day or weekend of reflection is a wonderful
spiritual practice. This "desert spirituality," how-
ever, can fill all forty days. We can fulfill our
Lenten resolutions with a purpose -- writing daily
notes to family and friends can inspire new grati-
tude, every time we pass up that specific food
item can be cause for intercession for deeper suf-
ferings and privations of others.
The Gospel tells us that "the Spirit drove him out
into the desert." In other words, God wants us to
be here. What feels uncomfortable is actually part
of our spiritual journey. To be stretched, to be
challenged, to confront our
own areas of weakness --
these things are essential
in our walk with God. This

sert?

Lenten Bible Study Bible Study will be held on the Thursdays of Lent, beginning on Thursday, February 22nd through Thursday, March 22nd, and is open to all who wish to attend. We will focus on the Scriptures for the following Sunday, and how the Holy Spirit speaks to us in these sacred words. These sessions will be facilitated by Dea-con Greg, and will begin promptly at 7:00 PM in the first floor meeting room of the Most Holy Name School Building. Handouts will be pro-vided, and each session will conclude at 8:00 PM. Please consider making this time of openness to God's Word a part of your Lenten observance!
St. Anthony’s Chapel Shop The Chapel Shop will be open on
Friday evenings during Lent at the
conclusion of Stations of the Cross.
Mass Intentions for Fr. Garvey Fr. Garvey has moved on to St. John Vianney Manor and continues to pray for our Mass Inten-tions at his daily Mass there. We will provide Fr. Garvey with a list of intentions each month for as long as we can. We are asking for more inten-tions for this purpose. We will list these inten-tions, just like we have in the past, in our first bul-letin of the month. Our prayers for the dead help our loved ones work through their experience of Purgatory. The Mass is the best prayer for this. Masses may also be offered for the living for spe-cial intentions or as a Spiritual Bouquet for their benefit as God sees best. Catholic Community Food Bank
The Catholic Community Food Bank continues to serve the needs of those in our community. The 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to noon at Most Holy Name Church Hall is the designated day for distributions.
Tuesday, February 20th is the next distribution date.
During Lent, the Ladies of Charity will be col-lecting socks for homeless men and women and for the children at Providence Connections, a ministry on the North Side involved with at risk families with children. Socks come to mind be-cause of the Holy Thursday tradition of Washing of the Feet. We keep in touch with the homeless shelters and they have told us they always need socks. All socks should be new. They can be white socks, colored socks, wool socks, cotton socks, cute socks for kids, baby socks etc. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to La-dies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. Look for the SOCK DRIVE bin in church during Lent! Thank you!

This Is the Time of Fulfillment – The season of Lent is our yearly spiri-tual journey with Jesus through his passion, death and resurrection. As a community of faith we mark those im-
portant moments along the road to Calvary where Jesus revealed the immense depth of God’s love for us. Individually, we choose to immerse our-selves in deeper prayer, the suffering of fasting and increased good works so that we might have our hearts transformed and made ever more like God’s so that we can continue to reflect his great love in the world. This is a task that cannot wait. While we hope that heaven awaits us at a time still to come, we are called to ready ourselves now and be firmly set on the path to salvation. On
Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to strengthen our communities of faith so that we might have every help and opportunity to be prepared for the Kingdom of God. Greetings! I wanted to say a huge Thank You this week to the students of the CCD program for creating such fantastic posters representing what they have learned. To the families for contributing items for the baskets, (they were incredible and packed with a variety of things). To the CCD staff for helping to plan the breakfast, sell tickets, prepare or serve food and clean up. To those who came to the breakfast and/or bought raffle tickets. To the representatives for the Diocesan Chimbote Missionary Project for explaining their mission and the importance of the work that they do. Thank you everyone, together we raised over $1000.00 to be given to the Diocesan Chimbote Missionary project. Please keep our second graders and their families in your prayers as they prepare to receive the sacrament of reconciliation on the 24th of this month.

Rivers Casino Trip The next trip to the River’s Casino is on Thursday, March 8th. The cost of the trip is $20 and you will get back $20 in free play and $5 in food. The bus will leave St. Aloysius at 10:00 am and then pick up at Wesbanco in Troy Hill. The bus leaves the casino at 3:45 pm to return home. We are Girl Scout Troop 50640, and we are working towards our Gold Award. A step towards this goal is to advocate for a change we would like to see in our community. Due to the impending closure of Jeffery Primary School, we feel that this would be an excel-lent way to utilize the otherwise soon-to-be vacant public space. Tapping Theology - As a means of becoming more familiar with the young adults in our proposed parish grouping, Saint Peter Parish is inviting all young adults in the proposed grouping to their next session of 'Tapping Theology' at Penn Brewery on Monday, February 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. Participants must be at least 21 and are responsible for their own bever-ages.
