Dear Friends,
Given our deep devotion to the Rosary, I wanted to invite you to keep the sorrowful mysteries of Christ’s Passion present in your mind through some reflections over the Five Sorrowful Mysteries, which are mysteries that help us in returning to God. As you know, Lent is a time of conversion and God wants nothing more than to lead us there, but it will demand more than a good intention or a nice resolution. It will demand a heart. It will demand that you lay down your life for Him who laid down His life for you. As St. Alphonsus Ligouri writes:“Our time is no time for fear as we are witnesses of a God who gave up His own life out of love for us. The Passion of Jesus was an excess of the love of God, so anyone who meditates on it, will follow Him to the end.”
The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden. If we consider the history of salvation at large, we can see that the “Agony in the Garden” really began with the “Tragedy in the Garden.” In these two gardens we find two forms of victimhood: the victimhood of Adam and Eve and the victimhood of Jesus Christ.
First, the victimhood of Adam and Eve is wryly described by Bl. John Henry Newman as the “Original Excuse.” He explains, pointing even to us who sin, that no one sins without making some excuse to himself for sinning. Adam and Eve both claimed that they were victimized – Adam by Eve, and Eve by the serpent. Newman says we inevitably follow the same path: “The original excuse offered by them after sinning was that they were not really free, that they had acted under a constraining influence, the subtlety of the tempter . . . . And this has been the course of lawless pride ever since: to lead us, first, to exult in our uncontrollable liberty of will and conduct; then, when we have ruined ourselves, to plead that we are the slaves of necessity.” (Bl. John Henry Newman, Newman Reader, Sermon 8)
Second, the victimhood of Christ. Unlike Adam and Eve, Jesus did not place the blame on another, rather the Innocent One places all the blame upon Himself. In this Garden He makes Himself the excuse for everyone else. The soul of Jesus, as St. Paul says, “became sin, He made Himself Sin.” The moral sufferings of Jesus were without comparison – they were tremendous, much greater than the nails that pierced His hands and His feet. It was so intense that He sweat blood from the pores of His body.
His soul was sad to the point of death. He felt within His soul a sadness that was deep enough to cause the feeling of death – the Greek uses an adjective that means encompassed in sorrow, or engulfed in sorrow. (Cf., Mt 26,38) What are the causes of the moral suffering of Christ? St. Thomas explains, among other reasons, that the chief cause was the sins of all human beings are placed upon His shoulders. (Cf., S.Theol. III, q. 46, a.6) We may think of the circumstances, the number, the malice, the ugliness of one’s own sins; the sins of a culture, of a society, of governments; ages and ages of sin, a constant push and shove away from God’s love. He who knew no sin, placed upon himself all of this, which produced sadness unto death.
To think, however, after all of this agony, He calls us into communion with Him this day. He gives us the blessing to be with Him, to receive Him, to be in communion with Him. He became the victim, out of love for us and He shares His victimhood with us in the Eucharist.
Lent invites us to look at, take ownership of, and reject what we have done – with a humble and contrite heart. Then I may look upon what He did, for me, in order for my heart to begin to change. As Pope St. John Paul taught, “Sin is an integral part of the truth about the human person. To recognize oneself as a sinner is the first and essential step in returning to the healing love of God.”
Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,
Fr. Brian

Lenten Restrictions
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.
40 Days for Life Campaign
40 Days for Life Lenten Campaign is now underway! We are praying every day until Palm Sunday, March 25th, 2018. The campaign consists of Prayer and Fasting, Community Outreach and Peaceful Vigils outside of the abortion mills at local Planned Parenthood clinics. Please come pray with us, even one hour of your prayers and presence outside these abortion mills makes a difference, and every innocent life saved is another blessing from God! We need you to join us and show these young women the LOVE of Christ and prayerfully speak with them about life-affirming alternatives to abortion. Upcoming events:
