Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners,

A big welcome to Father Parker Sandoval!

Fr. Parker is an archdiocesan priest who resides at

Resurrection Church. He is speaking at all of the

Masses about the beauty and the necessity of our

annual Together in Mission campaign. We hope that you will

prayerfully consider participating as a part of this crucial campaign in our

archdiocese. We are all in this together, including our service and

assistance to the poor. Thank you to all of our tried and loyal participants!

Ash Wednesday is coming up! It is Wednesday, March 1. Although

it is NOT a holy day of obligation, it’s a terrific opportunity to get a head start

on Lent by participating in the holy Mass and receiving ashes as a sign of

our turning away from sin and returning to the Gospel. Ashes are distributed

at each of the Masses this day. Masses will be at 6:30 AM, 8 AM, 10 AM

(Schools), 12:15 PM, 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM (in Spanish).

With Lent, we return to our every Friday Stations of the Cross

tradition. Stations are offered at 6 PM (English) and then again at 7 PM

(Spanish). We are planning to have Fish Fridays every Friday in place of the

old Lenten Soup Suppers. (We will still have soup (from Foxy’s) and bread

(from Porto’s), in addition to the fish dinner.) Fish Fridays take place from

6 PM – 7:30 PM.

Do you ever visit our Adoration chapel? Holy Family offers

Eucharistic Adoration 24/7 in our Msgr. Lirette chapel on Lomita Ave., just

west of the church. 24/7! Take advantage of this miracle prayer time and

make a visit to Jesus exposed in the monstrance. Consider being a

scheduled adorer—see page 4.

William E. Simon, Jr. wrote a terrific article entitled “Waking Up From

Spiritual Sleepwalking.” In it he writes, “Some wag once quipped, ‘I’m not

asleep, but that doesn’t mean I’m awake.’ This vividly describes many of

today’s churchgoers. Though disciplined about attendance, many believers

sleepwalk through faith. In my Catholic tradition, the number of parishioners

who regularly attend Mass and truly engage with the church stands between

7% and 18%.

“Secularists describe this spiritual inertia as a byproduct of

modernity. They claim that excitement about religion has dwindled as

humanity looks toward science. It’s an interesting assertion but not one

backed by data. Vigorous churches are found throughout the U.S., and other

parishes can emulate them.” [to be continued]

Peace and blessings,

Fr. Jim Bevacqua, Pastor

Together in Mission

6 February 19, 2017

Today, the Together in Mission

annual appeal will launch. This is

a great opportunity to put your

love into action. At every Mass

we will hear from an insightful

speaker that will tell us about the

importance of sharing our gifts

with others. We are in this

together—the mission of helping

our fellow brothers and sister and

we are all asked to share the

light of Christ with others. For

those of you that have made gifts

in the past, be on the lookout for

a special mailing from our

Archdiocesan leaders asking you

to renew your gift.

Please mail in your gift directly to

the Together in Mission office to

ensure that you’re counted

among those that have answered

this vital call. Our parish has

been tasked with raising YOUR

PARISH GOAL I am confident

that each of you will prayerfully

consider sharing the abundant

gifts that God has shared with

each of us.

This Weekend we have Fr. Parker Sandoval speaking at all Masses next weekend about how

your support to Together in Mission makes a difference to parishes and schools in need in our

DID YOU KNOW?

Denial as a defense mechanism

It may be difficult to understand why an abuse

victim does not come forward immediately to report an assault. For those

who have suffered sexual assault or abuse, denial can be a powerful

defense mechanism, one that allows them to cope with the trauma and

its aftermath. Often, an abuser is someone the victim knows and trusts,

which makes it even harder to understand why the abuse is happening,

and harder to come forward and ask for help and protection. For a copy

GRUPO DE ORACION

“SANTA MONICA”

Rosario Arias, Sociedad Guadalupana, 818-522-5151

SABIA USTED?

Many Faces of Denial, Part 2” (Las muchas caras de la negación,
