A Note From Our Pastor
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
We the Christian Community of St. Thomas More, in an atmosphere of hospitality, are dedicated to
proclaiming the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through excellence in worship,
education, and service to others.
We believe that the nurturing of the community around the Eucharistic Table is extended
through gatherings which further strengthen and support us. We shall pursue this mission faithfully through the power of the Holy Spirit and the gifts
and talents of our members.
WITNESSING TO MARRIED LOVE
Today our parish rejoices with those couples celebrating significant years in their wedding anniversaries, 10 through 69 years These anniversaries total 529 years of marriage! Congratulations to each of them. Their presence among us today and their desire to come to God’s altar to thank and praise Him is a loving and beautiful love. May the Lord bless them abundantly!
Doesn’t God Answer My Prayers?
That’s a question I hear now and then from good people who are troubled by what they think are unanswered prayers. All of us have experienced this feeling and so for your consideration I am reprinting the following article by W.G. Somastine entitled WHAT PRAYER DOES. I have found it myself to be very meaningful.
PERSEVERE IN PRAYER, and good will surely come to you. How can it be otherwise? Prayer puts you in position to receive your good, and continued prayer keeps you in that position. The results, manifestations of good, are inevitable.
Do your prayers sometimes seem to you to avail you nothing? Does praying often seem to be a waste of time? Well, know this: no prayer is ever wasted. The slightest thought or word expressed toward the Father receives divine response. Something always happens when you pray to the best of your ability—and, needless to say, that something is always good. Every expression of good, no matter how small, is bound to bring good results. This is the law. A word of thanksgiving, a thought of love, and attitude of worship—these are a few of the expressions recognized and acted upon by the Spirit of the universe.
It should be remembered that our prayers do not change God; nor do they change His divine plan. He remains the same “yesterday and today and for ever.” Prayer changes only the one who is praying. It enhances personality, strengthens confidence, increases the ability to do good, and favors one in many other ways. True prayer does not try to persuade God to change His perfect plan. It seeks only to conform with the plan, moving constantly in harmony with the Father’s will.
The most beautiful and yet the most practical form of prayer is that of just waiting on the Lord.

Do you have blessed palm fronds from previous Palm Sundays at home? If you no longer want them, please bring them to the church so we can burn them for ashes for Ash Wednesday. Just place them in the basket in the Gathering Area by Sunday, February 23.
SHARING OUR CROSSES WITH EACH OTHER Leave a Cross, Take a Cross
You are invited to participate in our parish-wide Lenten Prayer Ministry. All of us have crosses that we carry. It may be an illness, a difficult relationship, or even a struggle of faith.
• Beginning this weekend, prayer intention cards will be in the pews. Complete one card with an intention for which you would like prayer. This can be done anonymously.
• Place the intention in the basket at the display in the Gathering Area by Ash Wednesday.
• Starting on Ash Wednesday, take a card from the basket and pray for that intention throughout Lent.
• At the end of Lent, return your prayer card between Palm Sunday and Good Friday so it can be used as fuel for the starting of the Easter Vigil Fire.
Help carry one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

ASH WEDNESDAY FAMILY MASS Children’s Attendance Taken
Join us as we begin our Lenten journey together as one family. The Ash Wednesday Family Mass is on February 26 at 7:00 pm. This Mass is part of the curriculum. Handouts will be given to students after Mass and will have to be turned into their catechist on March 1st for attendance.
What We Learned this Week in Our Faith Formation Classes
First grade learned Jesus gave us the Our Father Prayer to teach us how to pray to God. In our prayer we are invited to call God as our Father, Abba, to ask for our daily needs, and to long for His kingdom to come.
Second Grade – Congratulations to our children in the reconciliation program on celebrating their first reconciliation this past Tuesday. Msgr. Rice’s homily emphasized the importance of attending Mass on a weekly basis, given the impetus of one of the moms suggestion that a possible sin is to argue with your parent about going to Mass on Sundays.
Third Grade learned the different ways to pray: praise God, confess our sins, thank God, pray for others, and to pray for yourself.
Fourth and Fifth Grade The children were presented the Parable of the Good Shepherd, Wolf and Hireling. The Shepherd protects the sheep day and night. He leads them to the pasture for food, to the stream for water, and to the sheepfold at night to protect them from the wolf, their predator. The sheep trusts their shepherd because they know him and his voice. The children come to know Jesus is the Good Shepherd. We have everything we need. He guides us and strengthens us throughout our life. Jesus said the hirelings flee when they see the wolf coming, because they do not love the sheep like the Good Shepherd who is willing to lay down his life for the lives of the sheep. Do we know and trust the Good Shepherd?

A Note from Our Pastor continued from page 2
“They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength …they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Give yourself often to God in the silence—wait upon Him, listen, and trust Him; then give thanks for the blessings you receive. You do not have to tell Him what to do, nor do you have to urge Him to do it. He knows what to do, and because it is good, He wants to do it.
“Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” Wait on Him with an expectant attitude. Ponder His mighty works and realize that all things are possible with Him. Think of the way He unfolds a beautiful rosebud. Contemplate His power and wisdom as He transforms the lowly caterpillar into a gorgeous butterfly. See how He brings forth the bird from the egg, and how He bursts the tiny seed to produce the new stalk. Contemplate His activities in these ways, and your faith in Him is bound to increase.
Remember that while God does much for us, He usually answers our prayers with us. He must have a channel through which to deliver the goods, and that channel is nearly always you, yourself. Our hands are the only hands God has, and He must use our hands to bring about the fulfillment of our needs. We must, therefore, follow through in a physical way after launching our prayer Godward. “Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.”
The more you think with God, the more He thinks with you. Look for Him in all things.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
Have a faith-filled week. Let’s remember each other in prayer.
Msgr. Tom Rice

Stewardship TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE
Unleash the Gospel EVANGELIZATION
The Correct Thing for Catholics by John Hannigan
The title above is from a little book published in 1891 when “Catholics in certain crude communities are still regarded with suspicion and dislike and … hereditary prejudice.” It guided Catholic men and women in “conduct proper” because bad behavior in public would reflect on all Catholics. It covered how to receive Communion (“leave the railing immediately in concert with the rest”), or address an English bishop (“Your Lordship”), or deal with servants (“in private and in a firm manner”), or ride street cars (“a lady should thank a gentleman who relinquishes his seat in a low, well-bred, courteous tone”). Yes, these rules of etiquette are dated, but our behavior each day can reflect on our Church. We know “suspicion and dislike” because of recent scandals. Compare that to the simple witness of a group of Catholics saying “Grace” before a meal in a restaurant.
Today’s Scripture readings speak of God’s rules, the Commandments. Sirach teaches that in His immense wisdom God “understands man’s every deed” and if we “keep the commandments, they will save [us]” (15:15-20). “Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!” (Psalm 119:1b). The Correct Thing book guided polite behavior for Catholics trying to fit into society. Jesus’ disciples were not trying to fit in. They stood out in witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus and so changed the world. Although Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for the burdensome rules of etiquette they placed on the people, Jesus called them and us to embrace God’s Law of love and allow Him to write it upon our hearts.
In today’s Gospel Jesus says He did not “come to abolish the law … but to fulfill [it]” (Matt 5:17). In fact, Jesus “doubles down,” expanding the meaning of obedience to the Commandments. When written on our hearts, “You shall not kill” also means to be reconciled with each other. “You shall not commit adultery” also means not lusting in our hearts.
The most important Correct Thing for Catholics – in Jesus’ day, in the 19th century, and today – is to conform our hearts to Jesus, not to social norms; to approach liturgy and prayer with hearts open humbly to God; to go forth with holy boldness as joyful missionaries to unleash the Gospel; to witness discipleship with Christ to all we meet; and to bring all of society back to God.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s readings challenge us to reflect on the true state of our hearts as it relates to stewardship. Do we think of stewardship as something we take care of once a year, simply a matter of ticking off boxes on a commitment card — or do we choose to embrace it as a spirituality and way of life that allows us to grow in conformity to Christ every day?
Our first reading, from the book of Sirach, teaches that our good God has given us freedom to make this choice — “Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him.” The concept of stewardship helps us to live out the fundamental choice to put God first. Stewardship is meant to be embraced as a way of life a life that involves a continuous conversion of heart.
In our Gospel passage, from Matthew, Jesus illustrates the difference between an external observance of the law and a true conversion of heart, saying, “You have heard that it was said… you shall not kill… But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” Our Lord is asking us not only for exterior acts, but for a true change of heart. In stewardship terms, that means seeing everything as a gift from Him, to be used for His glory and the good of others.
In the week ahead, let us examine the state of our hearts to ask ourselves if we have chosen to allow stewardship to become a way of life for us. Only then we will experience its true depth and heart-changing possibilities. The choice is ours.

Stewardship Thoughts Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Scripture readings from Sirach, Psalm 119, and St. Matthew’s Gospel, we learn that wholeheartedly following God’s commands and directives helps pave the way to eternal salvation. Be mindful that darkness influences secular society, which barrages us every day with temptations that attempt to block our relationship with Christ. Yet, if we are to deepen our personal relationship with Jesus, we must fight temptation that moves us to sin. We are truly free when we find and follow God’s will, not our own pleasures and desires. Jesus proclaims in St. Mark’s Gospel: For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the Gospel will save it. In St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthian community, he reminds us of the Spirit of Wisdom that leads us. Prompted by the Spirit and approached with a contrite heart, the Sacrament of Reconciliation provides an outpouring of mercy, forgiveness, and grace to overcome one’s sins and weaknesses. Make time for this important sacrament this week.
