⦿On lab days there will most likely be equipment on your lab table or on the counters around the classroom. This may be as simple as a ruler and scissors.

⦿The rule is: ⦿Students should NOT touch any equipment, even scissors, until they have been given instructions about the lab and how to use the equipment.

BEING SAFE DURING A LAB

Many labs come with an outlined lab procedure and may include additional rules not previously covered.

BEING SAFE- WASHING HANDS

In labs involving chemicals: Students must wash their hands with soap and water after every laboratory exploration

to remove any chemical residue that may have transferred during the

lab.

MORE SAFETY RULES

⦿No food, drinks, or gum in lab, unless it is a food lab, and those items will be provided by the teacher.

⦿Never use cracked or broken glassware.

⦿Tell the teacher if you break glassware and dispose of it in the broken glassware box. Do not pick it up with your bare hands.

SAFETY SITUATION #1Kevin didn’t eat breakfast. It was at least 2 hours still lunch and he was hungry.

The lab was only using water and some other

chemical so he decided to quickly eat his sandwich while the teacher’s back

was turned.

CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY

NEVER touch, taste, smell, or eat

chemicals unless it is part of the WRITTEN lab

instructions. ANYTHING can be hazardous.

◼Even if you think that a chemical is safe, don’t take the chance.

◼NEVER use lab equipment (beakers, etc.) as containers for food or drink.

CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY⦿ In the event that we use chemicals during

an investigation, the teacher will instruct you on how to dispose of them at the end of class.

⦿Students are expected to follow those directions completely to avoid improperly dumping chemicals.

⦿Hot glassware looks identical to cold glassware. Use beaker tongs or test tube holders when you are picking up heated glass.

⦿As you know, glass is fragile (easily

broken). Please be extraordinarily careful when handling glass. Report broken glass IMMEDIATELY!

CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY⦿Spilled chemicals can be potentially

dangerous if left unattended. Keep your area neat and tidy.
