SURGICAL SKILLS COURSE

The Athlete’s Hip:New Trends, Evaluation and Surgical Management

FINAL PROGRAM

AOSSM gratefully acknowledges Smith & Nephew and Stryker for an educational grant in support of this course.

FRIDAYFebruary 10, 2017

5:30pm – 8:30pm

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe aim of the course is to provide a greater understanding of normal and pathological states of the athlete’s hip. The course will provide a complete overview of the evaluation, non-surgical treatment and surgical correction of the athlete’s hip in all compartments; central, peripheral, peri-trochanteric and posterior. Integration of clinical expertise from outstanding local and international faculty with the best available clinical evidence into the decision making process for patient care will be presented to address clinical challenges relevant to every day practice. The psychomotor skills portion of the course will provide attendees a clear rationale and practical treatment algorithms to address both simple and complex hip pathologies.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe normal and pathologic hip kinematics in the athlete’s hip

• Describe and perform a complete physical exam, radiographic analysis, and then determine and identify non-operative and operative treatment plans

• Describe and perform the set up, portal placements, fluroscopic management, and techniques for repair and resection in hip preservation surgery

• Describe and perform arthroscopic and open hip preservation techniques in the central compartment (labral, articular, psoas and pincer pathology), peripheral compartment (cam and capsular pathology), peritrochanteric compartment (gluteus minimus, medius, maximus pathology), and posterior compartment (hamstring, Ilioischial impingement, sciatic nerve, piriformis pathology)

• Explain how to construct a hip practice and direct rehabilitation
