Subordinate: Adjective, Adverb, Noun
How to find Adjective Clause
Look for Relative Pronoun or Relative Adverb
If the word before the relative pronoun is a noun or pronoun, the clause is most likely an adjective clause.
How to find an Adverb Clause
Look for a Subordinating Conjunction If the word before the Subordinating
conjunction is a verb, adjective or adverb the clause is most likely an Adverb clause.
If a clause begins a sentence and is followed by a comma it is an adverb clause modifying the verb
***Adverb clauses tells where, when, how, why, to what extent***
How to determine if a clause is a Noun Clause?
You must figure out how it functions in a sentence. If the clause is a subject, DO, IO, PN, or OP you have a noun clause.
If a clause begins a sentence and Is not followed by a comma it is a noun clause

What is Sentence Structure Structure of a sentence: refers to the kinds
and number of clauses a sentence contains.
Types of sentences:1. Simple2. Compound3. Complex4. Compound-Complex
Simple Sentences
Simple Sentence: contains one independent clause and no subordinate clauses
EX: The hairstylist gave Latrice a new look.

Simple Sentence
A simple sentence may have a compound subject (EX:A), a compound verb (EX:B) or both (EX:C)
EX:A- Popcorn and soda are my two favorite treats at the movies
EX:B- Kelly read “Hamlet” and reported on it last week.
EX:C- The dog and kitten lay there and napped.
Compound Sentence Compound Sentence: contains two or more
independent clauses and no subordinate clauses.
Independent Clause: Jessica wrote about her grandmother
Independent Clause: Stephen wrote about his cousin from Guam
COMPOUND SENTENCE: Jessica wrote about her grandmother, and Stephen wrote about his cousin from Guam.
The Ind. Clauses of a compound sentence are usually joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)
EX: According to legend, Betsy Ross made our first flag, but little evidence supports this claim.
Note: Do not confuse a compound sentence with a simple sentence with a compound subject, compound verb or both.

Sometimes the independent clauses of a compound sentence may be joined by a a semicolon
EX: My favorite places are Miami and Aspen; Bernie’s favorite places are San Diego and Seattle.
Telling the difference between SIMPLE and COMPOUND SENT.
Simple= 1 IND. CLAUSE Compound= 2 or moreSIMPLE SENTENCE: Kim and Maureen
read each other’s short stories and made many suggestions for improvements.
COMPOUND SENTENCE: Kim and Maureen read each other’s stories, and they gave each other suggestions for improvements.
Another Example
*Note- when a subject is REPEATED after a conjunction it is NOT SIMPLE
Simple: We studied the artist and went to an exhibit of his paintings.
Compound: We studied the artist, and we went to an exhibit of his paintings.
Complex Sentences Complex Sentence – contains one independent
clause and at least one subordinate clause (adverb or adjective)
EX: When I watch Martha Graham’s performance, I feel like studying dance.
Note: Independent clauses can be interrupted by subordinate clauses
EX: All of the stars that we can see without a telescope are part of the Milky Way galaxy.

Compound Complex Sentences Compound-Complex Sentence –
contains two or more independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause
EX: Jill began painting only two years ago, but already she has been asked to show one of her paintings at the exhibit that is scheduled for May.
Another Example
Whenever we go on vacation, our neighbors mow our yard,and they collect our mail.
This sentence has 2 independent clauses and one subordinate clause

2. find all independent clauses and underline once and label them
