102016 SPRINT CUP SCHEDULE AND RESULTS
DID YOU KNOW?
3 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM DUCK COMMANDER 500
3 THINGS TO WATCH
— Godwin Kelly, [email protected]
If you think country music and you think Tennessee, you naturally think Nashville. But Bristol is actually considered the birthplace of country music. It was in Bristol that the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers made the first country recordings. It’s also the birthplace of Tennessee Ernie Ford.
WINNER: Kyle BuschREST OF TOP 5: Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr.FIRST ONE OUT: Chase Elliott
DARK HORSE: Kasey KahneDON’T BE SURPRISED IF: Busch continues building momentum during this hot streak.
SPRINT CUP: Ford City 500SITE: Bristol Motor Speedway (.533-mile, concrete oval)TV SCHEDULE: Friday, practice (Fox Sports 1, 11 a.m.), qualifying (Fox Sports 1, 4:15 p.m.). Saturday, practice (Fox Sports 1, 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.). Sunday, race (Fox, coverage begins at 12:30 p.m., green flag at 1:15 p.m.) XFINITY: Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300SITE: Bristol Motor SpeedwayTV SCHEDULE: Friday, practice (Fox Sports 1, 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.). Satur-day, qualifying (Fox Sports 1, 9:30 a.m.), race (Fox Sports 1, 12:30 p.m.)
GREG BIFFLE VS. KASEY KAHNE: Biffle crashed out late at Texas thanks to a nudge by Kahne. “I got hit by the No. 5,” Biffle said. “I’m not sure what happened. He just got in the back of me.”GODWIN KELLY’S TAKE: It sounds like both drivers walked away muttering “one of them racing deals.” But Kahne’s racing deals are starting to add up.
Biffle Kahne
Could Kyle Busch possibly be underrated?
In a way, yes, it seems so. He didn’t just win back-to-back Cup races the past two weeks, but swept the weekend each week (Truck and Cup Series at Martinsville, Xfinity and Cup at Texas). He’s now up to 161 wins — 36 in Cup, 80 in Nationwide/Xfinity, 45 in Trucks. And he’s only 30.
Why isn’t it a bigger deal? Two things, I’m guessing. First, many
fans and some media don’t like the idea of big-league Cup guys “stealing” wins in the lower divisions. But Kyle isn’t the only one moonlighting; he’s just winning a lot more often than the others. And secondly, you know, Kyle isn’t exactly a universally loved racer.
Banana and mayo? It’s the combo, on white bread, Junior
Earnhardt recently made famous on Twitter. They’ll sell them for $4 at Bristol this week and donate proceeds to Junior’s foundation. If you really want to crash the diet, though, go with Elvis’ favorite: Peanut butter and banana on white bread, browned in a skillet. Anyone else suddenly hungry?

Are we officially entering the Kyle Busch Era?GODSPEAK: Hey, I just jumped on the bandwagon. Plenty of room back here. KEN’S CALL: Calm down, these things run in cycles. We haven’t quite pulled the cur-tain on the Jimmie Johnson Era yet. Can Kyle make it 3 straight this week at Bristol?GODSPEAK: I’m going to hedge my bet and say “a Busch” will win this weekend. Kurt is aching for a victory.KEN’S CALL: I’m riding the wave. Yes, the Hat Trick is coming. Have you tried the Dale Jr. sandwich?GODSPEAK: I heard him say “It’s a North Carolina thing.” Fortunately, I live in Florida. KEN’S CALL: Nope, you'd have to sub peanut butter for the mayo.

1. Clint crumblingTalk about a driver who
needs a win. Clint Bowyer’s winless streak has stretched to 120 races. His last Cup vic-tory (eighth career) was near the end of the 2012 season with the now-defunct Waltrip Racing. Bowyer was hoping to turn it around during his one-year stint at HScott Motorsports, but has yet to score a top-10 finish. His best finish was 18th at California. He told kickinthetires.net, “I'm pretty miserable right now.”
2. Short-trackingThe NASCAR Cup Series
short-track schedule resumes with back-to-back races at
Bristol Motor Speedway and Richmond International Raceway. At Bristol, Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano have each won twice in the past five races there. Richmond winners, as usual, are all over the map. The past eight races have produced eight different winners. The streak started in 2011 with Kyle Busch at the first Richmond race.
3. No repeatsLap 295 at Texas won’t go in
the Richard Childress Racing highlight reel. All three RCR drivers — Austin Dillon, Paul Menard and Ryan Newman — were involved in a 13-car melee. Newman finished best-in-class when he limped his
No. 31 Chevy home to a 17th-place finish. The saving grace here is that none of the RCR cars bumped into each other to ignite the big crash. Still, this will come up in debriefing.

1. Pole jinx?No driver has won a Cup
race from the pole position this season. Brad Keselowski captured Las Vegas after starting fourth. Jimmie John-son won his two races starting 19th on the grid. Texas pole winner Carl Edwards finished seventh. Has the pole become bad luck?
2. Lap leaderMartin Truex Jr. had the
dominant car at Texas Motor Speedway, leading six differ-ent times for a race-high 141 laps. Unfortunately, one of those laps was not the last lap. He finished sixth. “It’s frustrating, but that’s the way it goes,” said Truex, who lost the lead on the last restart.
3. Brain twisterCan you name each race
winner of the last NASCAR Sprint Cup, Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series events? Well, actually, it’s the same guy. Kyle Busch swept the Truck-Cup weekend at Martinsville, then the Xfinity-Cup weekend at Texas. He’s running out of brooms.
