WELCOME to the 27th International Guitar Festival of Great Britain.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

OUR MEDIA PARTNERS PARTNERS

visitwirral.com

Liverpool-born Brendan McCormack co-founded the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain with Rob Smith in 1988. He was the director of the festival for many years and encouraged many guitarists to play in Wirral for the first time through his powerful personality and the respect he earned as a virtuoso guitarist.

The first floor concert room seats up to 100 people and is ideally suited for classical and jazz concerts and perfectly complements the programme at the Floral Pavilion’s main auditorium and Blue Lounge.

This imposing, Victorian building on the seafront is also a hotel, restaurant and home to a runner-up CAMRA Best Pub.

In 1988, Wirral Council’s newly appointed Arts Officer, Rob Smith, was looking to create a different kind of ‘community festival’ for Wirral. At the reopening of the recently refurbished Birkenhead Priory, he met musician Brendan McCormack, who suggested a guitar festival which celebrated the guitar in all of its styles and musical genres. Their aim was to bring top class national and international players to Wirral performing the widest range of styles and repertoire, whilst also providing a platform for local talent.

COMPETITIONTHE BRENDANMCCORMACK SERIES

Brendan was able to play in any style with great skill and panache. Rock, Classical and Early Music all interested him. Performing in concert halls, theatres or cafés, Brendan always respected the audience and left them bathed in the majesty of the music he played for them. Brendan sadly died unexpectedly in 2009.

The International Guitar Festival of Great Britain owes him an immense debt of gratitude and will always present his concert series.

The month of November, unlike summer festival months, offered little competition and also allowed better access to guitarists who might otherwise have been busy. In November 1989, the first ‘Wirral International Guitar Festival’ ran for 7 days, presented 18 concerts and events, and was a resounding success. In 1991 the name was changed to the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain.

Now, under the directorship of Dave Tracey, it continues that spirit of attracting the best international artists, whilst also showcasing very talented local players.

The festival has always attempted to place the musicians in intimate settings where the audience feels connected with the artists. The main house and Blue Lounge at the Floral Pavilion as well

The relaxed and friendly bar at The Queens Royal is extremely popular with both locals, residents and Floral Pavilion theatregoers and in April was renamed ‘The Stage Door Tap @ The Queen’s Royal’ featuring old theatre and

as The Queens Royal Hotel are perfect for this synergy.

Classical music, Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock’n’Roll and Rock are all here throughout November setting Wirral alight with great music.

Please join us in celebrating the guitar! We look forward to your company.

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac returns with its stunning new stage production, performing in meticulous note-for-note detail all the classic hits from one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of rock music.

Recognised internationally as the world’s leading Fleetwood Mac tribute show, and with the priceless golden seal of approval from founding member Mick Fleetwood, this show takes you on an epic musical journey through changing eras and styles, from the sixties London blues scene right through to the staggering commercial success of the seventies and eighties, and beyond.

topped the charts and travelled the world. The band exploded in 1984 and imploded in 1987 and most people think that was the end of the story. Nasher has been very quietly writing, producing and recoding his own music and to date has three solo albums under his belt. His gigs are a cross between an engaging troubador and an aspiring comedian interspersed with Nasher’s own compositions and maybe an odd Frankie tune.

Many of The Blues Band’s 21st century fans weren’t even born when these five virtuosos, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical

fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’.

About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising.

The Ivor Novello Award winner for Most Outstanding Song Collection enjoyed early muiltiple chart successes, including Flowers In The Rain, the first record to be played on BBC Radio One. Then in 1970, Roy teamed up with fellow Birmingham songwriter Jeff Lynne to form The Electric Light Orchestra.

When Roy was approached to play on the Bo Diddley London Sessions album, he quickly formed a rock ‘n’ roll style pop band which he called Wizzard.

Wizzard went on to score seven major hit records, including one of the biggest Christmas anthems of all time, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day and the rest, as they say, is history.

Norman Watt-Roy, Charlie Charles, John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher became known as ‘The Blockheads’. In 1979 Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick became a number one hit record but by 1982 Ian Dury & The Blockheads had disbanded.

In 1990 the death of Charlie Charles re-united them to play two benefit gigs and now, 15 years since the subsequent death of Ian Dury, The Blockheads continue to build their ‘wall of sound ‘.

This concert comes with a guarantee of excellence.

Guitarist, Mike Walker and pianist, Gwilym Symcock form the British pairing of this international jazz group. Steve Rodby and Adam Nusbaum, bass and drums respectively, represent the American side of the band. The term ‘supergroup’ seems the only appropriate description

of The Impossible Gentlemen. Each player is a virtuoso on their instrument.

Mike and Gwilym are viewed as the cream of European contemporary musicians. Gwilym was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize for his solo piano album, Good Days at Schloss Elmau.

Steve Rodby is bassist and producer for Pat Metheney and also played for Art Pepper as well as numerous others. Adam Nusbaum has played with John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Sonny Rollins and Michael Brecker to name but a few.

The Phil Chisnall Band make their sixth consecutive Guitar Festival appearance. Performing an eclectic mix of self-written and cover songs, they are sure to delight a packed house again. Look out for some local musicians guesting with the band again.

One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell celebrates 50 years as a professional musician.

a narrative that is both significant and poignant.

Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album Eight Frames a Second and in 1974 the release of Streets of London earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

A summit meeting between two of the finest guitarists in the world. Martin Taylor, who is established as possibly the finest guitarist of his generation, has a technique that is matchless; his musicality is sublime and encompasses many styles, from the brilliance of his interpretations of the music of Django Reinhardt to explorations of jazz fusion. The Guitar Festival commissioned Martin and trumpeter/composer, Guy Barker to write and perform a suite inspired by the music of Django that was later performed at the Proms.

Martin will be joined by Swedish guitarist, Ulf Wakenius, a former member of Oscar Peterson’s Quartet and Ray Brown’s Trio. Ulf has recorded many solo albums including the musical tribute to the late Esbjorn Svensson, Love Is Real. He has also recorded the music of Keith Jarrett on Notes from the Heart. Ulf is an outstanding guitarist.
