MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MR NOURSE

AL AIN ACADEMY

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a school we would like to send our sincerest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and all of the extended Nahyan family as we all mourn the passing of the President’s beloved mother, Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed Al Nahyan.

We joined the country in a period of mourning with our flag lowered to half mast and a cessation of music in the mornings. We continue to keep her loss in our hearts and minds and join in the prayers across the Emirates for the mother of the President, the first wife of Sheikh Zayed and the great granddaughter of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa, known as Zayed the First. Sheikha Hessa’s loss will be felt by many.

One of her companions, Suhaila Al Shamsi paid tribute to her this week noting that “her entire life was dedicated to helping UAE nationals and expatriates” We give thanks for all her philanthropic work and for her tremendous contribution to this peaceful and generous nation.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend,

Mr Nourse

Our annual Carton Regatta is taking place this Friday- 2nd February at Al Bandar Marina in Abu Dhabi. If your child is participating, please ensure you arrive at the Marina for a 4pm start. The rafts will be inspected and then races will take place at approximately 5pm.

Welcome back to the second term!

The FS1 children have jumped back into the school routine very well.

The children have been working hard in all areas of our curriculum. We have begun a new topic, that is one of our favourites to teach children. Fairy tale stories are so rich with vocabulary, and encourages children to use and build their language skills. This is our second week telling the Jack in the Beanstalk story. Next week we move on to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and our then we read Little Red Riding Hood. Not only are the children learning language, they are also learning about not to take things that don’t belong to them, and not talking with strangers. The children have also been planting beans to see if we can grow our own beanstalks.

In numeracy we are continuing to count every day and working on number recognition. Many of the children are making great progress counting to ten and beyond. During the first week in January we began to work on patterns. Throughout the year group each class will continue to work on making patterns, during group time.

SWIMMING!! Although, it is cool outside, the pool area is heated and the pool is also heated. The children are loving it! AND the swimming teachers are loving it as well. This is an important part of gaining confidence within the children. Again, they are building language, gaining confidence, and learning a new skill, by being in the water. Please remember no jewelry on PE days, for safety reasons, as well as taking the risk of losing an earring or necklace. Thank you to those parents who have taken the time to teach and encourage your child to dress themselves. It is a great help to their teachers, and your child’s confidence building.

FS2Term Two has launched with a bang, with our first Topic ‘’Supersonic Space’’. The children are thoroughly enjoying this topic, which provides many cross-curricular activities. The big focus that FS2 have this term is developing vocabulary. We are concentrating on understanding and expanding this body of language, through all areas of learning. Our first book has been ‘’How to catch a star’’ by Oliver Jeffers. The first fo-cus for this book, was the vocabulary used in the story. The children have been practising using the words, which has heavily supported their ability to recall and retell the story. There have been many wonderful pieces of Visual Art coming out of FS2. The children have been extending upon their basic drawing skills, to create the most wonderfully vibrant and interesting looking aliens. By using language to describe what they think an alien could look like first, they are then able to represent it according to their ideas. As they are becoming more familiar with the names and properties of the planets, we are seeing some wonderful representations of these as well as the constellations that surround them. In maths the children have been looking at the times of the day, using the language found in their Literacy textbook: before, after, next to help sequence their day. Now the children are moving into one more and one less than a given number. This is a concept that once again calls upon their vocabulary, where they begin to use the basic terms of addition and subtraction; more and less. We have also started moving into our diagraphs in Phase Three Phonics, the children are practising the pronunciation and recognition of these sounds, where two different letters to-gether create a single sound, as they begin to read and write familiarly heard words.

YEAR 1What a month January has been for Year 1. The children are really engaged with our new topic ‘We are the World’. Our first half of this topic has been based on animals around the world. Our animal day was great fun and the chil-dren learned about the different classifications of animals and what makes them special. We had so much positive feedback from both children and parents about how much they learnt and how much fun the children had. It was nice for the teachers to be able to work with all the children in Year 1. Our zoo trip was a lovely way to enhance our learning and children learnt about the different threats to animals in different parts of the world. Thank you to all of those who offered your support.

In our normal class routines we have been learning about money in Maths and the children have been able to help set up shops and role-play buying items and giving change. We wrote extra-long number sentences to show how cash registers work out how much our shopping costs. In English we have written our own animal stories and learnt how to improve the vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation to make them even better.

Next month will be just as exciting. One of the things we are looking forward to is our ‘Geography day’ when we will learn all about the different continents and seas.

YEAR 5

Year 5 have started 2018 with a bang – literally! We were lucky enough to visit the Secondary chemistry lab where Mr. Cosegrove introduced our students to lab safety. He also demonstrated an experiment with them to show the meaning of respiration, which is one the criteria for all living things. In Science, the students are learning how to identify the difference between living and non-living things. Using an inquiry model, Mr. Cosegrove asked students to think about which would be a better food source: sugar or carbohydrates. Through his experiment, students learnt that sugar gives you short, quick bursts of energy while carbohydrates are slower burning and provide energy for longer.

Year 5 have also been lucky enough to be trialing the new Lego robot kits recently purchased by Aldar Academies. Mr. Andy Turner, the Head of Education Technology, visited one of our classes where he demonstrated how to build and program our own Lego robots. All of the Year 5 classes have been busy this month with learning to create more complex codes for our robots. Some of the Year 5 students volunteered to represent Al Ain Academy at the Aldar Academies Carton Regatta. These students have been very busy this month building their boats using plastic bottles, wood, rope and tape. It has been a challenge for them but it has been great to see them show strong collaboration and innovation in this project! We look forward to see them race their boats on 2nd February!

The teams are:

Team 1: Nazim Mohammed, Eisa McGrath, Samuel Koll, Aryan Sajeev, Daniel Moussa, Tameem Quadri, Daud Khan, Pelopida Anogiatis

Team 2: Nadine El Ghoudi, Nour Mettwally, Raya Khaled, Shagufta Akhatar, Emerson Rouvi

YEAR 6

This month, Year 6 started our new Stone Age to Iron Age topic. The children have been learning about the history and geography of that period and using this information within our writing. We are looking forward to extending our knowledge of this topic through our trip to Al Ain Museum where the children will be able to examine artefacts from the Stone Age found in and around Al Ain.

In English, the children have been researching and creating their own information texts about the Stone, Bronze or Iron Age. They have examined the features found in information texts and then researched questions they developed. The children wrote their own information texts and peer assessed each other’s work to give feedback. We have also looked at how to use literary devices to add cohesion to paragraphs as well as where and when to use hyphens.

The children have been learning about the features of 2D and 3D shapes in Mathematics. They have also used Carroll Diagrams to sort 3D shapes and create their own 3D shapes using nets. The children then moved onto using angles and identified missing angles in triangles and quadrilaterals as well as plotting and identifying co-ordinates in all 4 quadrants and translating shapes within them too.

In Science, the children have continued to learn about light. They have recorded the light levels at different locations using a light meter and created their own periscopes to see how light travels. The children will continue to learn about light and conduct experiments using mirrors and prisms.

We are very much looking forward to participating in the Carton Regatta. The children have enjoyed building and testing their boats. We now look forward to seeing how the children fare in the race at Al Badar Marina in Abu Dhabi.

Sports NewsThis term seems to be going so quickly and with so many exciting events coming up for the students, it truly is a busy time! Some exciting news: we are pleased to see Foundation Stage One classes starting their swimming lessons. As you know, such opportunities are unique in our school, by giving them safe and purposeful expo-sure to water confidence and aquatic skills through our dedicated and knowledgeable team of teachers facili-tating the learning and development of these crucial life skills. In Foundation Stage 2 Swimming, the students have continued to work on body positions, propulsion and balance in the water. In PE both stages have been preparing for Sports Day with lesson focused on the different jumps, sack races, egg “n” spoon, relays and sending an object over long distances and specific target.

In Keys Stage One and Two swimming, all students have been developing their simultaneous strokes (Breast-stroke and introduction to butterfly) as well developing their alternate strokes (Frontcrawl and Backcrawl). In Physical Education, the students have been working on the disciplines and events for the upcoming Sports Day. The students have covered a wide variety of throws, jumps and running events and I am sure there will be some very pleasing performances on the day.

Sports News We will be hosting the Primary and Secondary Field Athletics competition between AAA, AAESS and BC on Monday 5th and Wednesday 7th February (next week). Therefore the following changes will happen to sports ECAs due to the safety of using the AstroTurf for throwing and jumping events for multiple schools at the same time as trying to run sports ECAs:

Monday after school:

Touch Rugby to be cancelled.

Wednesday after school:

Primary Cricket to go onto Astro area next to the pool.

Recreational Football to be cancelled.

Basketball to go onto the Red Quad.

If your child normally attends one of the ECAs that is affected and is not participating in the Athletics fixture they will be able to attend an alternative club on that day. Primary students may join cricket on Wednesday if they usually attend Recreational football. If your child chooses not to attend an alternative club, they need to be collected at the end of the school day (2:40pm) or go to the Primary or Secondary late room.

If you would like to come and watch please do come along, our students would love the extra support and I have no doubt that you will be impressed by their sporting ability!!

Many thanks in advance.
