FE III Lesson 3

Today we will be continuing our work in Unit 4 : “Transport.” We will cover pp. 78 – 83 in your textbook.

In today’s lesson, we will cover:

• 1. A listening exercise about cycling• 2. Vocabulary to describe traffic and transport• 3. Expressions used to introduce opinions and recommendations• 4. A critical thinking exercise about dangerous habits• 5. How to provide reasons for our opinions

Listening Task 2

Go to page 78 in your textbook. Do exercise one. When you have finished, go on to exercise 2. As with all of our discussion exercises, you should work with someone else if you can. If you know someone in the class, work through the questions together. If you do not, don’t worry. If you have a family member who will work with you, that is fine too. If you do not, you may work alone. Please think about the questions and answer them out loud in English even if you are alone. It is important to actually speak. Speaking is a physical as well as a mental activity. You need to actually do it to learn it.

Listening Task 2 ContinuedListen to 4.6. Then do exercise 3 on p. 78.

Listen again and then do exercise 4 on p. 79. If you are still having difficulty, you may look at the script printed in the back of your book on pages 209 – 210.

Go on to 4.7 and complete exercise 5 on p. 80.

Listen to the audio one more time an do exercise 6. If you are still having difficulty, you may look at the script on p. 210.

Critical Thinking: Dangerous Habits

If you can find a partner, please do exercises 1 - 5 together with your partner. If you cannot find a partner, then think on your own about the questions and answer them out loud.

Speaking: Preparation for Speaking

Expanding on an ideaWhen we propose an idea, or make a recommendation, we often state our idea first and then go on to give more details about it.. We can do this by giving reasons, or by giving examples from our own experience.

Listen to audio script 4.8. Then do exercise 1 on p. 82.

Do exercises 2 – 4 on p. 82

Personal Experiences, p. 83

Using the correct past tense helps us to relate our personal experiences in ways others can understand. Do exercise 5 on p. 83 for practice. If you have a partner, do exercise 6 together. If you do not, then think about how you would ask and answer the questions and then do them out loud.

Go to the BBS discussion for this class on 10/19 on WebClass and do one (1) of the following:

a. Answer one of the questions in exercise 2 on p. 78.

or

b. Answer the following question: What is the scariest experience you have ever had.

If you post an answer on the BBS by 23:59, Monday, October 25, you will receive full credit for today’s class. If you do not, you will not receive credit.

Please note that NEXT MONDAY, October 26, we will be having our first Zoom meeting. We will be doing the speaking activity. Note that you may choose to do either the speaking activity in your textbook or you may choose to debate the advantages and disadvantages of introducing a taxi service with self-driving cars. In either event, you must come to the Zoom meeting next week.

If, for ANY REASON you cannot attend the Zoom meeting, then it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to write a script with two people discussing either of the topics (texting while walking or the introduction of a taxi service using self-driving cars). You must then mail this script to Brian at [email protected] NO LATER THAN Monday, November 1 at 23:59.

Goodbye for now.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all next week.
