JOB DESCRIPTION: STAFF NURSE

ROLE:

The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing patients needs, planning nursing care, implementing the plan of care, and evaluating results of such care in accordance with the policies and standards of the Nursing and Hospital Administration. The Staff Nurse works under the direction of the Head Nurse or his/her designee: and in conjunction with other health care professionals and paraprofessionals contributing to patient care.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. ASSESSMENTa. To obtain admission information from the patient and family as pertinent to the

patient’s present health status.b. To determine immediate patents needs for nursing care based upon the patient’s

history and physical status obtained within 24 hours of admission.c. To review the physical condition and needs of the patient on a daily basis. To

determine the patient’s response to nursing and medical intervention

2. PLANNINGa. To develop a plan of care based on the patient’s problems that have been

identified through nursing assessment including physiological, psychological and environmental aspects of care and health teaching needs and discharge planning.

b. To establish with the patient, family and other members of the health care team, patient outcomes/ response based on the nursing assessment, and which are consistent with therapy prescribed by responsible practitioner.

c. To exercise professional judgment in establishing priorities in relation to the plan of care and in carrying out such priorities.

3. IMPLEMENTATIONa. To exercise professional skill and judgment in performing nursing care activities.b. To establish rapport with other members of the nursing staff and heath care team

and to communicate and document patient’s needs, progress and changes in patient’s condition.

c. To carry out prescribed treatments and administration of medications completely safe, and in accordance with establish policies and procedures.

d. To use services, supplies and equipment economically.e. To plan and participate in the health care teaching of the patient and patient’s

family.

4. EVALUATIONa. To judge the effectiveness of the plan of care on a daily basis and make

appropriate changes.b. To determine the appropriateness of the initial discharge plans and to initiate

health care teaching and referrals as indicated by the patient’s needs.
