Tommy Atkins to Mr Kipling
Youve done us lots of kindness MrKipling in the past
Youve taught that we are humananyhow
But I do not like the things as youhave said of us the last
No I its jolly hard of you to slateus now
I am a bloomin Tommy but IveBave a pound or two
And Im splicnd to my old womanon the square
So I take my pen in Africa to writetheBC lines to you
For to say I do not think yourwords is fair
Our jobl Your jobl Yours maybring most praise
Get two fifty down for a Bongand give it nil away I
But whether one writes or singsor fights in these advertisingdays
To boom yer work is the way tomake it pay pay payl
Were not all abeut minded andour weakness is not
Always those as you have pointedout so kind
For lots of ub is steady chaps andBorne of us had got
Good characters dye see to leavebehind
Theres some of us is rips no doubttheres some what drinks theirpayi
And some what leaves their girlsbehind them too
But most of ur is fair and squarewhatever you may say
Not a bit like that darned Tom-my

Our jobl Your job Yours maybring moat praise
Gets a hundred quid a weekand gives it all away 1
But whether one writes or recitesor fights in these advertisingdays
To boom yer job is the way tomake it pay pay payl
Youre a kindly hearted beggar andyour influence is great
And theres thanks dont mindowning due to you

Financial Archaic Barbarism
We are oblivious to the fact thatif we had a roan amoug us whowrought such havoc with our finan-

draws¬
this sum from the circulatingmedium of the country until thematuring of his obligations makesoutgo of it Imagine him as theUnited States government is to daywith 208000000 buried hi hisvaults uselees to himself or othersEvery secretary of the treasury dur ¬

TOPICS OF THE DAY
The Boston Herald wishes to hovea medical Uespot sent to these Isl-
ands¬
Nol thanks awfully dearHerald wo have one here now whoburns property at his own wantonwill who imprisons and releases menwithout regard to law or reasonwho will have to go bareheaded be ¬
fore many days from inability toobtain a large enough hat
And so King Billy OSmith isagain putting his foot down uponthe suggestions of the United Statesofficials in regard to land mattersThey wiBh to place our pulic landsin charge of the Fublio Land Officeand Rex objects One would thinkthat the United States would feelbound in conscience and in honor tofollow aB closely as possible theprinciples of the defeated annex ¬
ation treaty
From Jack McCandless remarksat the meeting to consider alley-ways
¬
in the fire swept district it issafe to say he owns no proyerty thereIt is equally safe to say that MessrsGolburn and Acbi have propertythere The remarks made by theproperty owners about new firelimits were sound in demandingthat such limits must bear evenlyupon the whole city
A subscriber asks us why the threecottages on the lower side of theextension of Kukui street wereburned We must admit we do notknow and hold the opinion that thepersons who ordeiod the firing cangive uo rood reason unless it maybe that the cottages were in block15 and it was desired to make aclean sweep from Kukui street tothe harbor from mere exuberance oflicense We may be wrong
Now that the occasion for licensedincendiaries appears to be passingwe may look for increased aotivityon the part of the burners whosepowers are waning It will perhapsbe thought desirable to put thetorch to buildings to add to theeymetry of a block or for someother idle purposse Property own ¬
ers may now thwart this work byinjunction proceedings ctrom 5urCourts with great propriety
Governor Gage of California hascalled an extra session of the Legis-lature
¬
one of the sixteen objectsbeing to elect the United StatesSenator to succeed Senator WhiteThe question is where will DanBurns get off The indications arethat Irving M Scott the famousshipbuilder or Gen W H L Barnesthe most doBerviog republican inCalifornia will easily defeat theman from Mexico with an ancientrecord of the most savory character
The motives actuating the exclu-sion
¬
of Brigham H Roberts from aseat in the House of Representa ¬
tives were not based so much uponthe faot of the immorality of having

mote than one wife but upon thehigher principles of obedience to thelaw and constitution On the ques-
tion¬
of polygamous marriages inconnection with the tenets of HolyWrit Roberts had the advantage ofhiB opponents His defense is wellworth reading
The outlook for the passage of theHopburn Nicaragua canal at thissession of congress appears to bebrighter than ever They mere factthat Great Britain claims that fullAmerioan coutrol of the canal is aviolation of the Clayton BulwerTreaty is an objection that will van ¬
ish into this air under the criticalconditions in which English pseudoStatesmen have placed their country
There rould be no possible doubtas to the decision of PresidentMcKinley as to the Council of Stateappropriating money for the pur-
pose¬
of eradicating the bubonicplague Nevertheless it was onlyproper wise and modest for MrDole to bo on the safe side andobtain his approval after the snub-bing
¬
he received in the land matterNow go ahead boys and dont leavea dollar in the Treasury Nevermind the watch dog
How pleasant it is to see formerfoes become frieuds Here is Jap-an
¬
anxious to establish a militaryschool at Poking in order to teachthe Chinese how to shoot and be-
come¬
real live soldiers When theresult is attained Russia will have atremendous power to fight againstshould she be aggressive but theprobabilities are that she like ouron dearly loved Stevens will thinkthe pear is ripe before those Chi ¬
nese soldiers are trained up to alevel with the Japanese
That the Hawaiian Governmentbill is not going through Congressas slick as its friendB contemplatedis evidenced by the fact that SenatorPlate of Connecticut has given no-
tice¬
of important amendments Onetaues away our delegate to Con-gress
¬
and another continues the ex-
isting¬
customs between the twocountries Abl Mr Dole more hasteless spread and theres many a sliptwixt the cup and the lip You
hurried annexation too briskly
The Ixdefekdext agrees with theBulletin that as regards the recon-
struction¬
of the Chinatown districta special commission is in order Itis better to make haste by goingslow than to rush bindly at a fivebarred gate and get a cropper Weare rather too prone in this city tobe too rapid in public affairs andthen to regretfully undo what hasbeen done at great expense TakeRowells walls along the Nuuanustream for example They will haveto come down and that unsightlydrain turned into a valuable stream
From recent Washington dis-
patches¬
it appears that the UnitedStates intends as soon as possibleto transfer Chinese immigrationHJatters from the Custom House De ¬
partment This is sensible and pro-
per¬
for the existing system hasboon a great detriment to CustomHouse work For instance Coll JPJackson oolleotorof the portof SanFrancisco has beeu praotically com-pelled
¬
to devote most of bin time toChinese instead of to his customsduties Hawaii has acted on theproposed new plan both with Chi ¬
nese and Japanese for many years
