FCS & Homemaker Newsletter MAY~JUNE 2016 Dear Friends, We have been so busy lately completing all of our projects at school before it goes out for the summer, working on our 4-year Plan of Work and providing educational workshops and opportunities on a variety of topics. Some highlights include our Spring Walking Program, Weight the Reality Series, Whoo Gives a Hoot! Beautification Project, Summer Health Fair, and so much more! We would love to have you join us at some of our upcoming events, programs and workshops! Congratulations to our four Owsley County High School Seniors that received our Extension Homemaker scholarships! We had 4 seniors apply and receive the $250 scholarship money including the following in alphabetical order: Axl Bryant, Matthew Nuttle, Austin Sizemore and Hannah Turner. Special thanks to our Owsley County Extension Homemakers that raised the money for the student scholarships through their fundraising efforts! Thanks again for your continued support and participation! Whoo Gives a Hoot! Beautification Project Summer/Fall 2016 Owsley County Please join the Owsley County Family & Consumer Sciences Advisory Council as we work to make our community a more beautiful place to live. We have several public spots available in town, out in the county and at our county park that are ready to be adopted by a caring group. Who needs community service hours? We need you to! Please call me at (606)593-5109 to register your group for the beautification project. Signs will mark the landscaped areas once completed letting others know your group cares as well. Come Sew with Us Monday, May 16th, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon

Wolfe CES, Campton, KY For those of you that pre-registered, we will be leaving the Owsley County Extension Office by 8:10 a.m. traveling by the office minivan. You should have received your risk management plan letter by mail. Please bring the completed plan with you, and we will make a copy of your insurance card if we have not already done so.

Indian Creek Extension Homemakers Monday, May 16th, 6:00 p.m.

Indian Creek Presbyterian Church We hope to see you at our monthly meeting. We will be trying a healthy recipe, updating our walking program progress and much more. We would love to have you join us!

Bird Feeder Workshop Wednesday, May 18th, 2016, 9:30 a.m.-12:00 noon

UK RCARS Wood Center Please join us as we learn all about KY Wood Products, KY's Forest, local hardwoods and the insects that endanger our forestland. We will also construct a bird feeder. For those of you that pre-registered and received a letter, please bring your risk management contact information sheet with you on the morning of the 18th if you have not turned it in already. Also, we can make a copy of your insurance card that day. We will be driving the office mini van and will be leaving the Owsley County Extension Service Office at 8:35 a.m. Registration cost is $10.00 and can be paid that day. We will be stopping for lunch after the workshop.

Hand Quilted Pillow Project Part 2 Wednesday, May 18th, 3:30 p.m. Owsley County Extension Service

For those of you that participated in our 1st hand quilting workshop when we started our pillow, this will be the final workshop for this project. Please complete your hand quilting prior to this workshop. Hope that you can make it to complete your pillow! Please let us know if you have a scheduling conflict.

Whoo Gives a Hoot! Beautification Project Friday, May 20th, 2016, 9:00 a.m.-?

Owsley County Park Please join us as we work to make our community a more beautiful place to live and work. We will be manicuring our 3 flower beds at the Owsley County Park along the walking trail. We truly need your help on this project. If you are available, we would love to have you join us. This program is sponsored by the Owsley County Family & Consumer Science Advisory Council.

Homebased Microprocessor Workshop Tuesday, May 24th, 2016, 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Owsley County Extension Service If you are interested in becoming a certified Homebased Microprocessor in Kentucky, you must attend one of these workshops. After attending and passing a test, you will be allowed to sell items such as canned tomatoes and tomato products, pickled fruits and vegetables, salsa, barbecue sauce, pepper or herb jellies, pressure-canned vegetables, and low-or no-sugar jams and jellies. There is a $50 certification fee for this workshop. Please see attached flier for more details.

Work Ready Community Workshop Resume Writing/Interview Skills

Thursday, June 2nd, 2016, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Owsley County Extension Service Office

Are you interested in improving your resume? Do you need to brush up your interview skills? If so, please join us for this two-hour workshop. We will focus on resume writing and participate in mock interviews. Desired soft skills for employees will also be highlighted. We would love to have you join us!

Summer Health Fair Monday, June 6th, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon

Owsley County Senior Citizens Center Please join us as we come together as a community to offer you a variety of health screenings and educational exhibits related to your health and living healthy! This event is for all community members! Hope to see you there!

Super Star Chef Cooking Camp Tuesday, June 14th-Thursday, June 16th, 2016,

10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Owsley County Extension Service

This program is for youth ages 9-19 that are interested in learning how to cook and prepare food. Please let us know if you have anyone interested in attending this wonderful 3-day program. Space is limited.

Spring Walking Program Celebration Day Friday, June 17th, 2016, 12:00 noon

Owsley County Extension Service Please join us as we celebrate our 6 weeks of physical activity success! Don't forget that the last day of the program is Wednesday, June 8th and all paperwork is due Friday, June 10th for you to be eligible for prizes. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Ovarian Screening Program

Tuesday, June 21st, 3:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. Appts. UK's Campus, Lexington, KY

We will be taking another van load to the UK Markey Cancer Center to get 6 ladies screened for ovarian cancer. If you are a first time participant, you will receive a packet of information to fill out prior to

arrival. For those on the list to attend this screening, you will receive a letter in the mail from me with the risk management paperwork soon. Our appointments are in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. We will stop and eat as well. Full travel details will be noted in the individual letters that will be mailed out. If you would like to be added to our ovarian screening waiting list, please let me know.

Food Preservation Workshop Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016, 1:30 p.m.

Owsley County Extension Service Please join us as we preserve Zesty Salsa. This is a hands-on workshop in which the participants will be directly involved in the cutting and dicing of the vegetables. You should be able to leave this workshop with the knowledge and skills to make your own salsa at home, as well as, gaining confidence to conquer other recipes and food preservation methods.

Extension Homemaker Picnic & Funny Money Auction Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, 11:00 a.m.

Owsley County Extension Service You have worked hard all year, now it is time to celebrate! All Extension Homemakers are invited to attend this event which we will be celebrating your year long hard work and participation. Please join us for our annual event. It is potluck, so bring your favorite recipe to share. We will be auctioning off some great items with the funny money you have earned. Hope to see you there!
