Gov. Dayton proclaims January as Radon Action Month

Freeborn County Public Health will offer free radon testing kits to area residents.

Governor Mark Dayton has issued a procla-mation declaring January 2012 “Radon Action Month” in Minnesota to promote awareness of this important health issue. Freeborn County Public Health will offer free radon test kits to homeowners in Freeborn County in order to encourage homeowners to test.

The MN Dept. of Health recommends that all homes in Minnesota be tested for radon. It’s the only way to know if your home has an elevated level of radon, which can cause lung cancer. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils and can enter homes primarily through cracks and openings in basement or foundation floors and walls.

To obtain a free test kit, come into Freeborn County Public Health. We are located in the Government Center at 411 South Broadway in Albert Lea.

MDH estimates that one in three existing Minnesota homes have radon levels that pose

a large health risk over many years of exposure. Radon is the second leading cause of lung can-cer in the United States and more than 21,000 deaths are attributed to radon each year.

Radon tests that have been performed in Freeborn County average 7.36 pCi/L, making it one of the highest average counties in the state of Minnesota. 66.31% of tests returned (out of 564 since about 2002) have tested over 4.0 pCi/L. So in essence, about 2 out of 3 tests done in that county will be over the EPA action level.

Radon exposure, however, is largely prevent-able. First, test your home to see if you have el-evated radon levels. Testing is easy, inexpensive and only takes 3-5 days. In homes with levels over 4.0 pCi/L, homeowners should consider verification testing and possibly installing a mitigation system, which will remove radon from your home. The final step is to encourage friends, family, and co-workers to test their own homes for radon.

For more information on radon testing and mitigation visit www.health.state.mn.us/radon or call the Minnesota Department of Health Indoor Air Unit at 651-201-4601 or 1-800-798-9050. Anyone interested in mitigating his or her home for radon should consult MDH’s list of certified radon mitigation contractors at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/indoor-air/radon/mitigation.html.

Discounts are Increasing!Fire Chief Thanks the Community: After being a member of the Clarks Grove Fire Department for 39 years of which 29 years I served as Fire Chief, I submitted my resignation from the Department on Monday January 2,2012 . I want to personally thank the Citizens of Clarks Grove and the sur-rounding area for giving me the opportunity to serve all of you over the past 39 years . Whether it was a structure fire, a medical call, a traffic accident or whatever the emergency situation, it was my privilege to help you out in any way I could . I also want to thank my neighboring Fire Departments who helped out the Clarks Grove Fire Department, es-pecially our sister station, the Geneva Fire Department . Many other agencies like the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Department, the County Dispatchers, the ALMC EMS Staff, Allen’s Tow and Travel, the State Highway Patrol, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and countless other people and agencies that helped us out over the years . I need to also thank my family and especially my wife Nancy, who was always at my side to turn on the bedroom light so I could get dressed in the middle of the night and respond to calls, or she would lend me her ear when I returned after a bad fire or emergency call. These are all countless memories that I will cherish in my heart forever !!!! When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished . What he does after that is all in the line of duty!Retired Fire Chief Carl A. Anderson

HERE’S SUDOKU HOW IT WORKS:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Anderson
