Activity 4I don’t own a mobile phone. I don’t have a computer or an MP3 player. I have no idea for how to surf the net, send an e-mail or download a ringtone. People they often raise their eyebrows when I tell them all this, but what knocks them over with amazement is the in fact that I don’t have a television. People call me a technophobe. But although I’m not afraid of all these technologies. I just don’t need for them.

‘How on the earth do you get by?’ they ask. ‘How do you learn about what’s happening in the world?’ No a problem, I say. I buy a daily newspaper. I listen to the radio. If people want to contact me, they can call me on the ‘landline’ such as people now call my old-fashioned telephone. Oh yes, and they can write to me. After all, the postman still comes every day. No, I’m not a technophobe. It’s just that only the old technologies serve me very well, thank you.

GrammarActivity 9Answer Key: The mobile music devices such as the i-Pod are gadget of the moment, but are they safe? There is a growing scientific evidence that if the person listens to music on such devices at an high volume levels and for a long period, they can seriously damage their hearing. For this reason one manufacture has introduced the volume restriction on their player. Users simply have to download an piece of software from a company’s website and load it into their player. In a same way, parents will be able to limit the volume of their children’s players.

WritingActivity 6 Discursive compositions: Read this example answer to the question ‘Should teenagers earn their pocket money?’ Find five sentences that shouldn’t be there because they aren’t relevant.

Unlike most of my friends, I don’t get any pocket money unless I do jobs around the house. I’vesaved about £500 over the last five years. My friends laugh at me when I tell them this, but there are many good reasons why this agreement is good for me and my parents. One friend in particular, called John, is always making jokes about me washing the dishes.

First of all, by earning my pocket money I have a better idea about the realities of life than many of my friends do. I understand, for example, that money doesn’t just grow on trees. Of course, I don’t think my friends think it grows on trees, either, but you know what I mean. I know that when I leave home I will have to work hard in order to afford the things I want. Also, by doing jobs around the house, I am learning skills which will be important to me later, when I have to look after myself.

Page 11: FCE key Laser B2

Furthermore, I do not think it is fair to expect my parents to do all the housework. They have their jobs, too, and they come home tired. My mum’s a doctor and my dad’s been a headmaster for the past five years. If everyone in the family helps with the household chores, then things get finished more quickly and we all have more free time to spend together. I like to spend my free time listening to music.

To sum up, I believe that if children earn their pocket money it’s not only good for them, but for the whole family.

In fact, in recent years ever more children are taking it up music as a hobby. Now science is beginning to prove what music teachers have been saying it for years - that learning music is good for you. Recent studies by psychologists have shown that children who they learn a musical instrument are more self-confident and generally more happier. Children also experience the benefits of working hard and persevering, and the sense of achievement that these bring. Because the music is another form of personal expression, young musicians tend to be more imaginative and creative than children who they don’t play an instrument. Many studies have also been shown that there is a strong relationship between learning music and improved scores in school subjects as such as maths, science and languages. However, but the benefits aren’t only academic. There are social benefits, too. Music is only something to make and share with others, and a language that is understood by all ages and cultures.

A picture paints a thousand words, so they say. The same is true of our facial expressions and movements whenever we communicate with the others. This is called ‘non-verbal communication’ and many research has found that the 65% to 95% of the meaning of a message is communicated with our bodies much rather than our words. We all know people who fling their arms about when they’re talking, but the truth is we are all use gestures when we speak. Sometimes we are aware of what we’re doing, for example when we use our hands to describe something. However, very much of our communication takes place

Page 23: FCE key Laser B2

unconsciously. The eye movements, frowns and twitching of the mouth are not going on all the time without us knowing. The worrying thing is that the person we are talking to them can often understand more from what we do than what we say. What’s more than, because gestures mean different things in different cultures, it is possible to by accidentally cause offence when speaking to someone from another country.

Click on the words you think should not be there. How will you know if you have been stung by a bee? First you feel a slight prick at the place where you were been stung. This will feel something like a small pin or needle. Shortly afterwards, the area around it the sting will feel hot and there will not be some swelling and redness in the same area. In many cases the bee’s stinger will remain in the body. If in this is the case, do not try to remove the stinger with your fingers. This may pump more of the bee’s venom into your body. Instead, use the side of something flat, like as a credit card, to gently push the stinger out. As soon as you can, put some ice on the site of the sting to help stop the swelling. For most of people a bee’s sting is a painful but harmless. For some, though, a bee sting can be very dangerous. This is because the bee sting can causes an allergic reaction. If the swelling is extreme, or if you feel sick or dizzy, then you should to go to see a doctor as soon as possible.
