¿Conoces o has escuchado de algún caso de violencia intrafamiliar en esta pandemia? Los estudios de varias organizaciones indican que los casos han aumentado.De acuerdo con una encuesta reciente de la Conferen-cia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB), la violencia sexual y el abuso doméstico son proble-mas que ocurren por doquier, tanto que uno de cada seis muchachos y una de cada cuatro muchachas van a sufrir abuso sexual antes de que cumplan los 18 años.Por esta razón, desde 1992, ha advertido públicamente que la violencia en contra de las mujeres nunca está justifi cada y que cualquier forma de violencia (físi-ca, sexual, psicológica o verbal) es pecado, y muchas veces, hasta un crimen. Cada octubre, este tema cobra especial relevancia en la Iglesia católica de Estados Unidos, ya que se con-sidera el mes de concientización y prevención de la violencia doméstica.En este sentido, muchas son las voces que están in-formando sobre el creciente índice de afectados por la violencia intrafamiliar y de cómo tomar acción y prevenir nuevos casos.Por ejemplo, la doctora, terapeuta familiar y escritora Christauria Welland, que trabaja en la jurisdicción de la Diócesis de San Diego, es una voz recurrente y una ferviente facilitadora de la prevención de la violencia domestica en las parroquias y comunidades católicas.Ella, que suele cooperar con USCCB y algunas con-ferencias de obispos de otros países, fue enfática en señalar en conferencia digital la semana pasada que los casos han aumentado signifi cativamente en esta pandemia.Esta versión también la sostiene el Banco Interameri-cano de Desarrollo (IADB). En su sitio web, destaca que tras 7 meses de haberse declarado la pandemia del covid-19, el estrés, las difi cultades económicas, el desempleo, el confi namiento prolongado en el hogar y las restricciones a la movilidad han ocasionado un mayor número de reportes de casos de violencia en los hogares.

En el matrimonioSegún USCCB, la violencia doméstica no es un pro-blema de enfado o ira, sino un problema de uso de la fuerza e intimidación para controlar y dominar. Cuando esta violencia ocurre dentro de una pareja que está casada por la iglesia, el cónyuge abusado puede preguntarse: ¿Cómo se relacionan estos actos violentos con mi promesa de llevar mi matrimonio en las buenas y en las malas?El cónyuge que ha sido agredido tiene que saber que debe actuar para poner fi n al abuso y que esta acción no viola las promesas matrimoniales, cita USCCB. Y agrega que aunque la violencia doméstica puede dirigirse hacia los hombres, tiende a dañar más a las mujeres y los niños. Según los reportes recientes de la incidencia de vio-lencia doméstica, más mujeres que hombres repor-tan ser víctimas de violencia causada por su compa-ñero de vida. El 36% de las mujeres y el 29% de los hombres reportan haber sido víctimas de violencia doméstica en algún momento de sus vidas. Según el Departamento de Justicia de Estados Unidos, más del 50% de las mujeres Latinas están expuestas a padecer alguna forma de violencia in-terpersonal durante sus vidas. Según la organización no lucrativa “Paz sobre Vio-lencia” (Peace Over Violence) de Los Angeles y la Doctora Welland, es urgente capacitar a los párro-cos y líderes laicos de las parroquias y ministerios sobre cómo abordar los casos de violencia domés-tica, ya que ellos son los que deben escuchar a las víctimas y referir los casos a las instancias corres-pondientes.

No More Domestic Violence!Catholics are called to put a stop to violent behavior against any human being.

People are not born violent, they become violentDo you know or have you heard of any case of domestic violence in this pandemic? Studies by various organiza-tions indicate that cases have increased.According to a recent survey by the United States Con-ference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), sexual violence and domestic abuse are problems that occur everywhe-re, so much so that one in six boys and one in four girls will suff er abuse before they turn 18 years old.For this reason, since 1992, it has publicly warned that violence against women is never justifi ed and that any form of violence (physical, sexual, psychological, or verbal) is a sin, and many times, even a crime.Every October, this topic takes on special relevance in the Catholic Church in the United States, as it is consi-dered the month of awareness and prevention of domes-tic violence.In this sense, there are many voices that are reporting on the growing rate of those aff ected by domestic violence and on how to take action and prevent new cases.For example, the doctor, family therapist and writer Christauria Welland, who works in the jurisdiction of the Diocese of San Diego, is a recurring voice and facili-tator of the prevention of domestic violence in Catholic parishes and communities.She, who usually cooperates with the USCCB and some conferences of bishops from other countries, was em-phatic in pointing out in a digital conference last week that cases have increased signifi cantly in this pandemic.Th is version is also supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). While violence can be directed towards men, it tends to harm women and children more.According to recent reports of the incidence of do-mestic violence, more women than men report being victims of violence caused by their life partner. 36% of women and 29% of men report having been victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives.According to the United States Department of Justice, more than 50% of Latina women are exposed to some form of domestic violence during their lives.According to the non-profi t organization Peace Over Violence in Los Angeles and Dr. Welland, it is urgent to train pastors and lay leaders of parishes and minis-tries on how to deal with cases of domestic violence, since they are those who must listen to the victims and refer the cases to the corresponding authorities.

Let us ask the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, to intercede for the families, especially ours in St. Marcellinus who are suff ering domes-tic violence, so that they increase their faith and love and seek immediate help.
