Ethics
Some of the Ethic dilemmas that Pete Souza encounters are when he has to pose the
president in a certain way. A lot of Petes photos are of president in his natural
environment like at work, or spending time with his family, but a lot of official photos like
meetings with other presidents, or signing of certain laws and bills, Pete has to pose the
president to create a specific shot which might not be natural and correct shot thatactually happened. Another rule that Pete has to break sometime from the NPPA Code
of Ethics is number 4. It states that a photojournalist should avoid political involvement.
Since he takes photos of the president it is kind of hard for him not to be involved in
politics.
Bias
The bias that Pete Souza might have is the fact that photographs the president. He
needs to filter and edit the photos in a way that the public will see their president only in
positive light. Since president is the most protected person in the country, any photo
that Secret Service thinks will endanger the president or reveal any secret security
detail is removed and deleted never to be seen by public.

Petes Work:

This is one the photos taken by Pete Souza of President Obama when he was in
Maryland attending dress rehearsal of a Russian play The Nutcracker in which she
plays a role of a mouse. Pete uses the rule of thirds here quite well. The president is the
main subject and he is in the leftmost third of the photo so the focus of the viewer falls
right to him first. The rest of the thirds of the photo helps the viewer identify where the
president is located. The facial expression of the subject in this case the president is
tired. This shows that the president is tired because he has a busy schedule running the
country but even with so many things to do he finds time to spend with his family. Depth
of field also causes the president to stand out of the photo. Everything that is not is the
same depth of field as the president like the doors and the blue railing is out of focus.
The used of lines in the background of the president gives the photo the 3D look and
makes the theater look larger.

This photo is the official portrait of President Obama shot by Pete Souza during the first
term. In this image Pete keeps is simple by making a very simple white background in
the back. He just adds the two flags in the back but they are out of focus in which case
he uses the technique of depth of field where he focuses in the president and everythingelse is out of focus. In this photo, the president takes up more than 2/3 of the photo so
the main subject is obvious. The quality of light plays a big role. In this photo Pete uses
directional light from a flash from the left causing he face to be more lit up and showing
his expression more. The expression on the main subject is a smile meaning he is
happy and ready to take on the challenge of running the country.

This photo was taken behind the closed doors of the oval office when the presidenttakes a moment by himself to look at the presidential papers of political battles and
make a decision. This photo Pete also uses the rule of thirds and he places the main
subject in the center third of the photo. Depth of field causes everything behind the
president to be out of focus and the focus of the photo to be on him only. The use of
texture is also important in this photo. The texture of the polished wooden desk and the
leather chair create an office-like atmosphere. The subject takes up more than 1/3 of
the photo so it is obvious who the main subject is. The subject does not look like he was
posed because everything like facial expression and the posture tells that it is a photo of
the actual situation. The use of natural sunlight from the back window causes the office
to be more lit up and look more comfortable for the president to make decisions that will
affect millions of people.

This is one ofthe photos done by Pete Souza that falls under the category of Behind
the Scenes of the White House. In this photo President Obama gives one of his senior
advisors a fist-bump while others are smiling. The main feature that Pete used here was
very short exposure time. By doing that he cause motion to freeze on a photo creating a
very interesting image of the president. Depth of field is different on this photo. The
president is not really in focus but the main attention is still set to him because in the
rule of thirds he is in the middle third of the photo. The contrast is high on this photo
therefore there is a big difference between dark and light colors on the photo making it
more detailed. The feeling that this image helps to create is the feeling that even
thought a president is a very important and serious man, at times he could be funny andjoke around with his friends.

Impact on Society:
The photos that Pete Souza takes have a large impact on society because they are
published in magazines and newspapers all around the world. From these photos
American citizens see the life of their president even though most of them are not
allowed to be close to him. Through Petes camera people see the life of the presidentand can see times when he is serious and all about business or when he is all about
having fun and relaxing.
Relations with Major
My major at AIC is nursing. The main aspect of any photojournalists job is to work
nicely with people to make sure that they are happy. These interactions with people
cause the photographer to get better photos and have access to events that some
photojournalists may not have. Main aspect of working as a nurse is to get along with
people as well. The main goal as a nurse is to satisfy your patient to make sure that thepain that they had before is not there once they leave from the hospital.
Viewpoints
In todays world, photojournalist Pete Souza is not viewed anything different or in low
status like in the older days. Quite the opposite, many people would want to work in his
place to capture the life of the president and publish it around the world.
