Kermit Blount enters his third season at the helm of the JCSU football program. In his first season, he improved the JCSU win total from the 2014 season by put-ting together a solid defensive team. He guided JCSU to a 37-20 upset win over then Southern Division leading Fayetteville State. That win over the Broncos was the first of three straight wins for JCSU. All told, the Golden Bulls won three of their last four games of the 2015 campaign.

Prior to coming to JCSU, he spent four seasons as the head coach at MEAC mem-ber Delaware State. While with the Hornets, Blount guided the DSU program to a 6-5 mark in 2012, including a 5-3 MEAC record. That season marked the most successful year since 2007 when Delaware State won the MEAC, finishing with a 10-2 record. In Blount’s third season with the Hornets in 2013, they also finished with a 5-3 MEAC record.

Before his appointment at Delaware State, Blount served as head coach at Winston-Salem State, his alma mater. He also led the Rams to two Pioneer Bowl appearances, winning in 1999.

Blount was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Year and as the Washington D.C. Pigskin Coach of the Year, as well as the 100% Wrong Club Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.

Throughout his coaching career, Blount has been associated with programs that have experienced phenomenal success. In all, he has been in a leadership role with teams that have won a total of six conference titles at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels. He has also served as President of the CIAA Football Coaches Association.

Prior to becoming head coach at WSSU, Blount served as an assistant coach for five seasons at South Carolina State from 1989-1993, coaching the quarterbacks, wide receivers and acting as the Bulldogs’ Offensive Coordinator. Blount also coached the quarterbacks at Howard University (1984-1989) and at East Carolina University (1983-1984). While at Howard, the Bison finished 9-1 and won the 1987 MEAC championship.

THE COMMEMORATIVE CLASSICThe 125-year-old historic rivalry began the authentic Black College Football Phenomenon. On December 27, 1892 Biddle Institute (Johnson C. Smith University) traveled to Livingstone College's Old Delta Grove campus in Salisbury, North Carolina. Though there was snow on the ground and it was only two days after Christmas, the teams forged their way to a historic moment in sports while writers recorded the results. A writer in the 1930 yearbook of Livingstone College provided a glimpse of that December experience.

According to historian T. M. Martin, the men of Biddle spent two years studying the sport of football. In 1892, they challenged the men of Livingstone, whose team was formally organized in the fall of that year.It is doubtful that when Biddle University and Livingstone College teed it up on December 27, 1892, in what was described as little more than a cow pasture, either team had the slightest inkling of the legacy they were about to give birth. Games of monumental historical significance, coaches of legendary proportions and players of extraordinary brilliance ultimately emerged from what was to become known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The teams played two 45-minute halves on Livingstone's front lawn. W. J. Trent scored Livingstone's only touch-down on a fumble recovery. By then, snow covered the field's markings and Biddle argued that the fumble was recovered out of bounds. The official, who was Livingstone’s head coach, ruled in Biddle's favor, allowing them to keep the 5-0 lead that they established early on, giving JCSU the historic first victory! The rivalry continues...

2017 GAME RECAP VS WINGATEJCSU Falls to Wingate 38-18 in Season Opener

Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 2, 2017) – Visiting Wingate jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead over Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday night at the Irwin Belk Complex and never trailed as they took a 38-18 win over the Golden Bulls in the season opener for both teams.

Wingate struck first after recovering a JCSU fumble on the open-ing kickoff. Lawrence Pittman scored from three yards out to cap a seven play, 24-yard drive to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 at the 11:48 mark.

The Bulldogs made it 14-0 with 6:17 to play in the first after Malik Bledsoe hauled in a 5-yard pass from quarterback James Whitaker. The score ballooned to 21-0 at the end of the first when Whitaker connected with Jay Hood on a 13-yard strike.

The Golden Bulls responded in the second, as Wilson Curtis (Minneapolis, Minn.) plowed his way into pay dirt to cap a seven-play, 63-yard drive. The point after was blocked as JCSU trailed 21-6.

Wingate put 10 more points on the board in the third to up their cushion to 31-6 after a 25-yard field goal by Freddy McCollum and a 73-yard punt return from B.J. Muckelvene.

JCSU quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) then scam-pered in from seven yards out to pull to within 31-12 with 11:54 left in the fourth.

Wingate added a touchdown on a three-yard rush from Blake Hayes to make it 38-12. JCSU capped the scoring when Ervin connected with Roderick Carter (Miami, Fla.) on a 28-yard pass with 31 seconds remaining to provide the 38-18 final.

JCSU Loses 20-17 Heartbreaker at ECSU

Elizabeth City, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2017) – Elizabeth City State jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and held off a Johnson C. Smith University comeback bid in the second half to take a 20-17 CIAA win at Roebuck Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

ECSU (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) jumped up 7-0 earlier after Daquan Neal ran an option over the left side at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter. The 53-yard Viking drive went seven plays. ECSU would add another touchdown on another four-yard run, this time from Chase Byrum with 2:48 on the first quarter clock, putting ECSU up 14-0.

JCSU (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) responded, as Desmond Dozier (Longs, S.C.) took a three-yard pass from Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) with 14:12 left in the second quarter. Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.), the holder on JCSU PAT attempts, was able to call an audible and ran in the two-point conversion to pull to within 14-8. Sophomore Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) knocked in a 22-yard field goal to bring JCSU to within 14-11 with 5:12 re-maining in the first half.

Dozier gave JCSU its first lead of the season after he caught a 38-yard strike from Ervin, putting JCSU up 17-14 with 11:39 left in the third. ECSU battled back, with Byrum collecting a 26-yard pass from Neal to provide the eventual game-winning score, 20-17.

Both teams had numerous opportunities in the fourth quarter. JCSU had one last shot to put together a game-winning drive after forcing an ECSU punt.

The Golden Bulls took over at the their own 23-yard line and with a fourth-and-one play at their own 32, JCSU had a false start penalty and was forced to punt. The JCSU defense came up big again, forcing another ECSU punt and took over at the 2:12 mark, but was unable to produce a first down, turning it over on downs. ECSU would then bleed the clock to send JCSU to the 20-17 defeat.

Individually, Ervin threw for 171 yards and two scores on a 15-of-32 effort while throwing one interception. Dozier was the lead receiver, catching three passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Dedric Robinson (Pageland, S.C.) led the Golden Bulls on the ground, rushing six times for 44 yards.

Defensively, Marcel Toran (Washington, D.C.) had 11 tackles and one tackle for loss. Kahj Huitt (Smyrna, Ga.), Kyaire Bynum (Lancaster, Pa.) and Daryl Napper (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each had five tackles.

2017 GAME RECAP VS. CHOWANChowan Tops JCSU, 10-7

Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 30, 2017) – Chowan's Connor Killeen hit a 29-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter as the visiting Hawks squeezed past Johnson C. Smith University 10-7 in CIAA football action at the Irwin Belk Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Chowan (2-3, 2-0 CIAA) and the Golden Bulls battled each other scoreless until the 1:04 mark of the second quarter, when Drew Buck hauled in a six-yard pass from Bryce Witt to go ahead 7-0.

The Golden Bulls (0-5, 0-2 CIAA) responded to tie the game mid-way through the third quarter when junior quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) found senior tight end Randy Wiley (Columbia, S.C.) alone in the back of the end zone for an 11-yard strike. Sophomore kicker Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) converted the point-after to provide the 7-7 tie.

Neither team could get much offense going in the fourth quarter. After a 15-yard Michael Offutt punt return put the Hawks in busi-ness at the Golden Bull 31-yard line, the Hawks were able to drive to the JCSU 12. After two straight incompletions from Witt, the Hawks turned to Killeen for the eventual game winner, a 29-yard kick from the right hash.

JCSU was in position for a game-winning drive starting at their own 31. Following a two-yard loss on a running play by Jachin Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) and a pass completion to Demarcus Berry (Vanceboro, N.C.), two straight incompletions, the latter coming on fourth down, gave the ball to the Hawks with 1:54 left.

Chowan then iced the game after Offutt busted loose for a nine-yard rush, earning a first down. The Hawks then kneeled for two consecutive plays to seal the win.

Defensively, JCSU linebacker Marcel Toran (Washington, D.C.) had eight tackles, including two sacks on the afternoon while teammate Kahj Huitt (Smyrna, Ga.) had six stops with four be-ing solo, including one sack. All told, the JCSU defense held the high-powered Chowan offense to just 205 yards on the day.

The Golden Bulls offense struggled, managing just 100 yards on 65 plays. Ervin threw for a season-low 27 yards on a 4-of-16 outing, including one touchdown. Watkins led the JCSU rushing attack with 68 yards on 20 carries.

2017 GAME RECAP AT WINSTON-SALEM STATEGolden Bulls Drop Tough 27-22 Decision at WSSU

Winston-Salem, N.C. (Oct. 7, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls put up 300 yards of total offense but was unable to cash in on numerous opportunities falling 27-22 at a soggy Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The homestanding Rams wasted no time, getting on the board following a nine-play 52-yard drive when Kerrion Moore pushed his way in from the JCSU three-yard line to put WSSU up 7-0. After JCSU punted to pin the Rams deep in their own territory, the Rams were forced to punt, but a high snap sailed through the end zone for a safety, putting JCSU on the board, 7-2.

Moore scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, this time on a 22-yard jaunt at the 14:50 mark of the second quarter that capped a seven-play, 99-yard drive., pushing the WSSU lead to 14-2. On the Rams next possession, Moore scored his third touchdown of the afternoon on a 48-yard run, making it 20-2.

On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Desmond Dozier (Longs, S.C.) took the ball at the three-yard line and weaved his way through several Ram defenders before juking the Ram kicker, ending with a school-record 97-yard kickoff re-turn for the score. The previous mark was a 93-yard return set in 1994 against Livingstone. Following Dozier’s heroics, JCSU trailed 20-9.

JCSU received the second half kickoff and was forced to punt, but a WSSU penalty gave JCSU new life at the WSSU 44. Quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) then raced for a 49-yard gain to the WSSU 8. Two plays later, Ervin was flushed out of the pocket and was picked off in the end zone by the Rams’ Darius Skinner to thwart the drive.

Neither team could mount much offense, as they traded three punts in the scoreless third quarter.

JCSU then hit pay dirt with 13:51 left when Gabriel Yuille (Baltimore, Md.) corralled a 31-yard pass after two WSSU defenders tipped the pass. Yuille’s catch was caught on his back as both WSSU defenders were falling to the ground. Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) knocked in the point after to pull to 20-16.

WSSU would then score on a two-yard plunge from quarterback Rod Tinsley to go up 27-16 with 8:45 to go. Prior to Tinsley’s score, JCSU was driving and had the ball at the WSSU 32, but the ball popped out of the JCSU running back’s hands and was returned 62 yards to the JCSU 2-yard line.

JCSU then mounted a comeback. After a Golden Bull punt, JCSU’s Deston Thornton (Kernersville, N.C.) was able to force Tinsley to fumble. Senior Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) pounced on the ball to give it back to JCSU at the WSSU 22-yard line. JCSU would not be able to capitalize, as they punted back to the Rams.

On the next Winston-Salem State possession, JCSU’s Jahvez Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga.) made a diving interception to give JCSU another opportunity in WSSU territory, this time at the WSSU 25. The Golden Bulls finally cashed in, going 25-yards in eight plays capped by a Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.) six-yard touchdown run, making it 27-22 with 3:19 to go.

JCSU was able to get one last chance at a game-winning drive, taking over at their own 16 after a WSSU punt.

After a first down completion to Rod Carter (Miami, Fla.), JCSU lost six yards on a Ervin rush and then two incompletions, followed by a last second heave that resulted in a WSSU interception sealed the win for the Rams.

The Golden Bulls drop to 0-6 overall, 0-3 in CIAA play and 0-1 in Southern Division play while WSSU improves to 4-2, 2-1 CIAA, and 1-0.

Individually, JCSU’s Ervin finished with 58 yards on the ground while Jachin Watkins (Charlotte, N.C.) had 44. Ervin also finished with 181 yards passing and a touchdown on a 16-of-37 outing with two interceptions. The JCSU receiving corps got four receptions each from Yuille and Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) with Yuille going for 54 yards and score and Holmes going for 36 yards.

Defensively, JCSU got a career-high 11 tackles from Kyaire Bynum (Lancaster, Pa.), including one for loss. Carlo Thomas had nine tackles on the afternoon with one going for loss and one fumble recovery. As a unit, JCSU recorded seven tackles-for-loss.

2017 GAME RECAP VS FAYETTEVILLE STATEFayetteville State Runs Past Golden Bulls, 41-16 Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 7, 2017) – The visiting Fayetteville State Uni-versity Broncos piled up 241 yards on the ground and Stevie Green scored three touchdowns to take a 41-16 CIAA Southern Division win over Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex.

The Golden Bulls (0-7, 0-4 CIAA, 0-2 Southern Division) started off strong, methodically driving the ball after receiving the opening kickoff. JCSU moved the chains on their first three plays, eventually driving to the FSU 17-yard line. After a penalty backed the Golden Bulls back five yards, sophomore Brandon Howard (Columbia, S.C.) pushed a 40-yard field goal at-tempt to the left, as the promising drive came up empty.

Fayetteville State then took over and eight plays later, Green found the end zone from eight yards out to give the Broncos the 7-0 lead at the 8:04 mark of the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Desmond Dozier (Longs, S.C.) sprinted through the FSU coverage team and raced down the sideline for a 92-yard kickoff return, his second in consecutive weeks. Last week, he set a new JCSU record with a 97-yard return against WSSU. Howard’s point-after attempt was no good, leaving FSU with the 7-6 lead.

FSU would go up 14-6 after Donshel Jetton found pay dirt from eight yards out with 5:26 in the first quarter.

Following a JCSU three-and-out, FSU got another score from Green, this time from nine-yards out to push the FSU lead to 21-6 with 1:12 left in the first quarter.

Neither team could get much going in the second quarter until Dar-nell Walker capped a five-play, 44-yard drive for FSU to go up 28-6 with just 35 seconds left in the half.

FSU went up 34-6 on their first possession of the second half when Jetton again scored, this time from six-yards out. FSU would then go up 41-6 on Green’s third score of the day, this time with 9:28 on the third quarter clock.

JCSU added a safety to make the score 41-8 at the 2:25 mark when sophomore linebacker David Francis (Pompano Beach, Fla.) tackled FSU quarterback Richard Lattimer in the end zone after a fumbled handoff.

The Golden Bulls added a touchdown in the fourth quarter when Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) pushed his way in from three-yards out. His conversion pass to Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) capped the scoring at 41-16.

Herbin led JCSU with 49 yards rushing with one score. He also fin-ished three-for-10 in the air for 16 yards while throwing one intercep-tion. JCSU starting quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) finished with 81 yards on a 7-of-10 outing while JCSU’s Francis led the way defensively with nine tackles (five solo) while recording a half sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

2017 GAME RECAP VS SHAWBrandon Howard’s Kick Lifts JCSU to 13-10 Win over Shaw Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Sophomore kicker Brandon Howard knocked in a 44-yard field goal with a minute remaining to lift Johnson C. Smith University to a 13-10 homecoming win over Shaw on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex.

The kick from Howard, a Columbia, S.C. product, capped a seven-play game-winning drive for the Golden Bulls, sending JCSU to their first win of the season.

The visiting Bears struck first at the 8:25 mark in the first quarter when Beni Kinsemi booted a 33-yard field goal to go up 3-0.

JCSU responded early in the second quarter, when Howard hit a 34-yarder, his first of the day, to cap a seven play, 59-yard drive. Shaw would take the lead 10-3 lead into the halftime break thanks to a one yard run from quarterback Darron Downing.

JCSU then scored 10 points in the fourth to take the win. JCSU’s lone touchdown of the day came when freshman running back Dedric Robinson (Pageland, S.C.) made his way into the end zone from four yards out. Howard’s point-after tied the game at 10-10.

On Shaw’s ensuing drive, the JCSU defense held, forcing the Bears to a three-and-out. Following a 32-yard Kinsemi punt to the JCSU 45, JCSU had a four-yard rush followed by an incompletion to bring up third-and-six. The Bears committed two penalties which awarded the Golden Bulls a first down. On the next play, JCSU quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) was intercepted in the end zone and returned to the JCSU 35-yard line, but an offside penalty gave JCSU new life and a first down at the Bear 36-yard line. Three rushing plays netted JCSU just three yards, setting up the fourth-down play. Following a JCSU timeout, JCSU’s How-ard trotted to the field and drilled the 44-yarder for the go-ahead score.

Shaw had one last chance, but a rush for no gain, an incomplete pass and a four-yard gain on a third-and 10 play had the Bears down to their last play. Shaw quarterback Darron Downing then threw incomplete to turn the ball over on downs with just 19 seconds left.

JCSU would then kneel on the next play to secure the win and improve to 1-7 overall, 1-5 in CIAA play and 1-2 in the Southern Division while Shaw drops to 3-5, 2-3 in league play and 1-2 in the division.

Offensively for JCSU, Ervin led the way, tossing for 203 yards on a 14-of-25 outing with one interception. Jachin Watkins (New Bern, N.C.) contributed 51 yards rushing on 19 carries while Robinson had 21 yards on seven carries and one touchdown.

JCSU had eight players with at least one reception and had a trio of players secure three catches each. Senior Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) had 53 yards, sophomore Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.) had 52 yards and Desmond Dozier (Longs, S.C.) had 25.

Defensively, JCSU’s Kyaire Bynum (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded nine tackles on the day with five being solo stops. Teammate JeJuan McCalston (Covington, Ga.) also had a good afternoon, tallying six tackles and coming away with an interception.
