Looking Aheadwith Steve

I’m in a doctor’s waiting room, reminded again why they call us patients. Patient is what you have to be when you just wait in a room with strangers where the television is on a channel you would have never chosen. Okay. I know that’s not why we are called patients. Kind of. As with so many English words, this one comes from the Greek language. In this case pathos referred to someone who was suffering. But taken together, it all starts to make sense. Sometimes in our suffering, all we can do is wait. There is not much we can do for ourselves, or we would have already done it. Our first instinct, when something is hurting us, is to make it stop. If we can’t make it stop, we seek someone who can. We are waiting on someone to bring us relief. This morning, I’m not suffering, but a family member is, and I’m the designated driver; a co-waiter. So here I am in a waiting room. “I wait for the salvation of the Lord,” said Jacob to his sons (Gen. 49:18). Why? Because Jacob can’t save himself and he knows it. It’s tempting to take matters into our own hands, to take shortcuts and disobey God in an attempt to get relief. But, “Do not say, ‘I will repay evil’; wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.” (Pr. 20:22). That doesn’t mean that we do nothing while we wait. After all, here I am waiting and writing this article! So while we wait we work and do what we can to fulfill our normal duties and glorify God. Waiting is not an excuse to be lazy. So, “Wait for the Lord and keep his way,” (Ps. 37:34). There’s still productive work to be done while we wait on the Lord to do what we cannot. God will do what we can’t do, but he won’t do what we should do. Our church family is full of patients right now. Some of our brothers and sisters are suffering physical, emotional, financial, marital, or spiritual pain. Many of us are waiting on the Lord now, and all of us will eventually. It’s just a necessary part of being a disciple. We cry out with the psalmist, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope” (Ps. 130:5). For all who are waiting on the Lord to do what you cannot do for yourself: be encouraged. Hope in his word. This waiting time was designed for your good. So I got to this waiting room over 55 minutes ago. Still waiting…

Through CWJC, we have the privilege of serving women,18-60 years old, in the Madison area who are looking to restart their lives in a positive direction by learning job skills in classes as well as being involved in job internships. Most importantly, they study the Bible to meet Jesus and learn His ways. Every month, we will be supplying and serving lunch at the Madison Campus located at UMC Heritage Church. By fellowshipping, we can get to know them and how to pray for them. CWJC also always needs women mentors as well as internships at local businesses.

For more info about these opportunities please contact: [email protected]
