Progress Reports go home on Tuesday, April 24.
If you have a current 5th
grader: There will be an information meeting for parents of upcoming 6th graders in the Berry
Gymnasium on Tuesday, April 24th, at 7:00 p.m. Course selection sheets will be distributed. We hope to see you there!
End of Year Withdrawals: If you know that your child will not be returning to Berry or not entering Spain Park in the
fall, please contact your child’s grade level office by calling the appropriate number at the top of this newsletter. It is
imperative that we know before the last day of school so the paperwork can be given to your child as he/she leaves on
May 24.
Student Schedule for the last week of school: Middle schools will follow the regular schedule on Monday and Tuesday,
May 21 and May 22. On Wednesday, May 23, middle schools dismiss at 1:30; lunch will be served. On Thursday, May
24, middle schools dismiss at 11:45; lunch will not be served. Buses will run accordingly.
Summer Registration will be held Thursday, July 26, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Celebrate Hoover Day will be held Saturday, May 5, from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Park on Valleydale Road.
Parking will be at Spain Park High School with shuttle service to Veterans Park. This event is free to the public and will
include veterans dedication, car show, kids zone, exhibitor pavilion, pony rides, petting zoo, American Red Cross Blood

Hoover Service Club Awards: Congratulations to Zoe Shore for her selection as the Hoover Service Club “Scholarship
Award” winner and Stephen Ritchey for his selection as the “Citizenship Award” winner. Stephen and Zoe will each
receive a $100.00 savings bond and they will be honored at The Hoover Service Club’s Awards luncheon on May 10.

Attention 8th
grade parents: We are looking for pictures for the 8th grade slide show that will be shown at our celebration
on May 11th. We DO NOT want individual photos but instead group pictures. These pictures can be of current 8
th grade
students from 6th grade to 8
th grade. Please email the pictures to [email protected] or
[email protected]. All photos must be submitted by Friday, April 27th
. Submission of photos does not
guarantee they will be used for the slideshow.
Alabama Theater Field Trip: In celebration of meeting our annual reading goals, we will be going to the Alabama
Theater on Friday, May 4th, to see Zookeeper (rated PG). Students will be participating in many activities over the
coming weeks, incorporating elements of the movie and our theme-"Unique Me: Wild About Reading". Details regarding
the field trip will be sent home around mid-April.
Teen Court of Jefferson County is recruiting teens for its upcoming training program. Teen Court is a peer sentencing
court conducted by teen volunteers for first time non-violent juvenile offenders. Students can apply to serve as attorneys,
clerks, bailiffs, and jurors. Teen Court allows young people to participate in deciding how juvenile offenders will be held
accountable. Teens interested in volunteering must be entering 8th thru 12
th grade in the fall and be in good academic
standing. If you are interested in serving as a Teen Court volunteer, please visit www.aclce.org or see your grade level
counselor for an application. Applications are due before May 1, 2012.
Zoo volunteers needed: The Birmingham Zoo is seeking teen volunteers who have a love and respect for animals and a
passion for serving the visitors at the zoo. Teens 13 to 18 years old may fill out an online application at
www.birminghamzoo.com
Lost & Found: Please encourage your child to check “Lost & Found” on the 1st floor outside the lunch room and also on
the 3rd
floor, lobby area. There are many items waiting to be claimed!
2011-2012 Yearbooks: Please remind your child to double check the updated, yellow yearbook list posted by his or her
homeroom teacher in order to confirm that a yearbook was previously purchased. If your child did not order a yearbook,
extra books will be sold for $50.00 once all the purchased books have been passed out. Once the yearbooks arrive, a
sale date will be announced so watch the upcoming newsletters for more information.
Softball: Congratulations to Julianna Cross, Hope Maddox, and Mary Katherine Tedder for making the All-Metro-South
team in softball for the 2012 season. Hope Maddox was also named to the Metro-South Championship All-Tournament
team.
Congratulations to the Boys’ Tennis Team: They won 4th place at the Metro South Tennis Tournament!
Congratulations to the Girls’ Tennis Team: They won 3rd place in the Metro South Tennis Tournament! Daryn Ellison
also won the #1 singles championship!
Boys’ Golf Team: Berry’s top three boy golfers will play in the Metro South Tournament on April 25 at Timberline.
Girls’ Golf Team: Berry’s top three girl golfers will play in the Metro South Tournament on April 24 at Ol’Colony in
Tuscaloosa.
Girls’ Basketball Spring Clinic: There will be a spring basketball clinic for any upcoming 7th and 8
th grader interested in
trying out for the girls’ basketball team. The clinic will be held April 24, 25, and 26 from 3:30-5:00. Any girl interested in
participating in the clinic will need to have an updated physical and consent form on file before they can participate. If

Grade Volleyball Tryouts will be held April 30th, May 1
st and 2
nd from 3:15-5:15. Current 6
th and 7
th graders
interested in trying out for next year’s teams must have an up to date physical and consent form turned in to one of the
coaches prior to the start of tryouts. This is a closed tryout. Parents need to pick up their children no later than 5:30 at

Berry Volleyball will hold an elementary volleyball camp for students’ grades 3-6 May 30, 31 and June 1 from 9-11:30.

Outdoor Track and Field: Berry will compete in the Metro Championship on April 23rd at Mountain Brook.
Wrestling: 6th and 7
th grade boys who are interested in wrestling next school year can sign up in the 7
th grade office or
you may e-mail Coach Swiderski at [email protected]. Summer workouts will be on the dates listed below:
June: 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, 28
th from 11:00am – 1:00 p.m. at Spain Park High school wrestling room.
July: 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th from 11:00am – 1:00 p.m. at Spain Park High school wrestling room.
In order to participate in summer workouts, you must complete the following forms: physical, consent,
concussion. Forms need to be turned in to Coach Swiderski by the end of the school year. If your son is participating in
football and has already turned in these forms to Coach Bowden, then the forms do not need to be filled out again.

Spain Park Youth Basketball Camp: Spain Park High School will host its annual Youth Basketball Camp June 4th-7
th
from 8:30am-12:00 noon for boys entering 2nd

Spain Park Freshman Basketball Tryouts for the 2012-2013 Spain Park Freshman Basketball Team will begin
Monday, May 14th from 3:45 to 5:45. In order to tryout, every player must have a current physical on file with Spain Park
