Be Alert for Alarms

Alarms in a specific area vs. the entire building

If the fire alarm sounds in your building, you should contact campus police or 911, then call the Prostaff member on duty. RAs should direct students to designated meeting location(s). When Prostaff arrives, he/she will provide the RA with more information as protocol can differ depending on the situation.

In the absence of the building RC or HC, the RA on Duty will assume leadership for implementing the emergency protocol until the RC on Duty arrives. The RA on Duty for the tower in which the alarm has sounded will assume leadership.

SummaryWe conduct training sessions and mock drills, like this one, to increase our odds

of survival in the event of a real emergency. We have learned that our world can

change quickly and that all of us have to know what to do in an emergency.

Every second you gain in an emergency situation can be the difference between

serious injury and safety.

Learn what your alarm looks and sounds like.

Know where all of the escape routes and emergency exits are.

Knock on doors, yelling fire exit the building, as you exit the facility

Use fire extinguishers when necessary

When you get out of the building, go to the designated meeting area and report in with your supervisor.

Don’t let someone else get hurt trying to find you.

Student residents present unique exposures that must be monitored.

Be prepared. Remember from your drill that “Preparation = Staying Safe.”
