Agenda
• You will learn why it is important to:
Know what the fire alarm sounds and looks like.
Get out of the building safely.
Know what action to take on the way out.
Learn how to use fire-fighting equipment.
Know where to go once safely out of the building.
Questions
Has anyone been inside a building during a fire or a chemical spill?
Does anyone know where all the exits and escape routes are in their respective hall/apartment?
How can we make the fire drill experience educational and memorable?
Staying Safe
Emergency situations can be brought on by:
Fires
Earthquakes
Tornados,
Hurricanes or other natural disasters, or:
Bombings.
What you should know
You can be hurt if you don’t know:
What the alarm in your area sounds and looks like.
Where all the exits are located.
How to use a fire extinguisher properly.
Where the appropriate check-in area is once you are safely outside.
Be Alert for Alarms
Alarms in a specific area vs. the entire building
If the fire alarm sounds in your building, you should contact campus police or 911, then call the Prostaff member on duty. RAs should direct students to designated meeting location(s). When Prostaff arrives, he/she will provide the RA with more information as protocol can differ depending on the situation.
In the absence of the building RC or HC, the RA on Duty will assume leadership for implementing the emergency protocol until the RC on Duty arrives. The RA on Duty for the tower in which the alarm has sounded will assume leadership.

SummaryWe conduct training sessions and mock drills, like this one, to increase our odds
of survival in the event of a real emergency. We have learned that our world can
change quickly and that all of us have to know what to do in an emergency.
Every second you gain in an emergency situation can be the difference between
serious injury and safety.
Learn what your alarm looks and sounds like.
Know where all of the escape routes and emergency exits are.
Knock on doors, yelling fire exit the building, as you exit the facility
Use fire extinguishers when necessary
When you get out of the building, go to the designated meeting area and report in with your supervisor.
Don’t let someone else get hurt trying to find you.
Student residents present unique exposures that must be monitored.
Be prepared. Remember from your drill that “Preparation = Staying Safe.”
