    GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Brother Knights,

Thanks to Ed Sauley, Sam Pellegrino and crew, the Mass and Lunch for Life went off without a hitch. The Mass crew parked over 29 buses and 250 cars. After a stiring Mass from our

Archbishop J. Peter Sartain (I am fast becoming an Archbishop groupy) and Concelbrated by our Auxiliary Bishop, Eusebio Elizondo, the Knight crew directed all buses, vehicles and personel out of the St. Martins Pavillion in less than 30 minutes. Kudos to all.

The same crew exhibited their expertise, once again at St. Martin’s, welcoming home 4000 troops from the 4th Stryker Brigade out of JBLM. Everyone involved was very impressed by the efficiency of Ed’s crew. I wish I had some pictures…

Please welcome our newest members: Daniel Montijo, Joshua Wills, and remit Thomas LaGrandeur. These members attended our 1st Degree held February 7th and are already getting involved in our council.

The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration planning is underway, Chaired by Darren Johnson. Tickets are available from Darren or any of the committee members (see the flyer). At this event, we will be issuing grant checks to 4 organizations from our Tootsie Roll Program. Over $10,000 will be distributed. If over 150 attend this event, I will NOT come dressed as a Lepracan, your choice.

It is my pleasure to announce that Ron and Elaine DeGroot have been nominated and voted as Family of the Year for 2012-2013. Their work and dedication to our Church, Council and Community are examples of why we enjoy the success we do.

It is also my extreme pleasure to announce Darren Johnson as Knight of the Year. Darren’s name and influence are on every activity we have at our council. He is, literally, the foundation of our success. If elected Grand Knight for 2013-2014, I am confident this council will continue to enjoy success, especially in the area of Church and Community.

Nominations for officer and chair positions are now being considered. If you are interested in making a difference in the direction of this council, please consider stepping up to the challenge.

40 Days for Life is underway at Planned Parenthood. The Knights are, especially, involved all day in Olympia on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s in Lacey. Please call Tom Hruska 561-5548 or Ron DeGroot 704-8822/412-1779 and volunteer you services for this worthy cause. We are making a difference.

Thanks to Darren and the breakfast crew, we had a successful membership drive and pancake breakfast. Darren reported that we made a clear profit of $190. Great job guys!!! Ed Harrison’s brochure was a big success. Thank you Ed!!! We have a lot of prospects, but no signed form 100’s, yet.

God Bless you all and I HOPE that Spring, will spring soon.

Catholic Trivia (easy this time): We frequently say/sing the word alleluia during Lent. True or False? Find the answer somewhere in the Newsletter.

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S MESSAGE Gentlemen: Thanks to all who helped out at the Mass for Life and the luncheon. I was inside during the parking but if the turn out for lunch was any indication, you were all very busy. There was a standing room only crowd for well over an hour during lunch, I thought my wrist would fall off dishing out all of Sam’s wonderful Beef and

    Barley soup. Thanks again.

On February 4th we were back again at St. Martin’s to help direct traffic for the return of the 4th Stryker Brigade celebration. With this much experience some of us could look forward to an exciting new career as valets or traffic cops. The head of Security was most appreciative of your efforts. Thanks again.

Don Bunz is our newest Sir Knight, having participated in the exemplification in Bellingham last Feb. 16th. Welcome aboard. For those interested, we will be hosting our own 4th Degree exemplification on June 8th at Sacred Heart and Hallen Hall. This is

definitely the closest this year, 1st and 2nd degree members wanting 4th degree membership get to the exemplifications soon as there is no longer a six month time period, for membership before becoming 4th degree.

To all Color Corp members, our District Master would like us to hold a Training and Certification, session here in Lacey at Hallen Hall this spring before our exemplification. Sir Knight Ron DeGroot, will be looking for a date sometime in May on a Saturday - more to follow.

We have been invited for an Honor Guard at 2pm on April 2nd in Portland at Chiles Center for the insatallation of Archbishop Designate Sample. Oregon State Deputy Pat Rice wrote that through his discussions with the Archdiocese of Portland the outgoing Archbishop Vlasny wants this to be the biggest and baddest Honor Guard he has ever seen. You gotta love that! I realize this is on a Tuesday, but please try to make it if you can.

    Fraternally yours,

    Mike Colosi Faithful Navigator

DAY PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN CHILD The Knights of Columbus has been a leader in the pro-life movement for over 40 years. With the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child soon approaching on April 7, the feast of the Annunciation in 2013, Knights have the opportunity to stand up and speak out against the evils of abortion.

Over many years, our counsel has participated in the Knights of Columbus Day of the Unborn Child. This year will be the same. Check our April news letter for more information. Note: due to Holy Week the feast of the Annunciation is moved to April, 7th.

48th ANNUAL CRAB FEED Lots of Knights helping out at the 48th

Catholic Trivia Answer: False. Alleluia is the word early Christians used to celebrate the Resurrection. During Lent, a time of communal penance and prayer, celebration is subdued until Easter.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Fr. LEE PERRY

It is with great pleasure that the officers of Council 1643 nominate Fr. Lee Perry (Olympia, WA) for the distinguished award of Knight of the Month for the month of February 2013. It is always a great thing to recognize a person of the clergy that serves his church, his community and parishioners, and is also a Knight of Columbus providing support to his Council.

St. George Byzantine Catholic Church is in full communion with the Roman Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, and invites all Catholics to come to share the Light of the East! Visitors to weekend or daily Divine Liturgies (Masses), services, and devotions are always welcome.

Fr Perry is the administrator for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine at St George Parish also. This icon is perhaps the oldest actual icon of the Blessed Virgin. According to the tradition, St. Luke created an icon of Our Lady while she was still living in Jerusalem. When Mary saw the beautiful icon of herself holding the Child Jesus in her arms, she blessed both St Luke and his work proclaiming, "My grace will accompany this icon." Located at St George Parish on the Yelm Highway, every Knight of Columbus should visit and pay tribute to this Icon.

Growing up in beautiful New England, Fr. Lee entered the Society of St. Joseph and served in schools and parishes throughout the South, mid-Atlantic region, and the Southwest. In 2001 he joined the Eparchy of Van Nuys and has been stationed at St. George/Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine in Olympia, WA ever since.

The Olympia area is blessed to have three (3) parishes within its jurisdiction, St. Michael Parish, Sacred Heart Parish, and St George Parish. It is a particular pleasure to recognize Fr Perry for all he does since we often concentrate on the other two parishes for activities and accolades. Let none of us forget, however, that we have many members who attend St. George Parish and are spiritually guided by their friend and mentor, Fr. Perry.

The men of Council 1643 are always proud to nominate their best candidates for the Knight of the Month award, but in this case, particularly proud to nominate one of our clergy and continue our unabashed support for the priests that serve us and our families. Thank you for all you do, Fr Lee Perry!!

FAMILY OF THE MONTH DON & CAROLE ROBBINS

Council 1643 Family of the Month for February 2013 is the Don and Carole Robbins Family.

Don and Carole have seven children and 28 grand children. Given the effort and love that this accomplishment alone must have taken, that alone would warrant an award!! However, Don and Carole have done more in their lifetime to help the church, the Knights Council 1643, and their community than most people even consider.

Don is an 8 year Knight and a 4th Degree Assembly member. In the council, Don is on the setup committee for all events that involve Council 1643. He is on the Auction Committee and was responsible this past year for the procurement of a large number of the auctionable items. Without his help, it looked for a time that the auction would not be a success. Instead, it was a complete success due to his efforts. He was also a key player at the Cowboy Barbeque and is on the Centennial Committee.

Don and Carole have been very active at Sacred Heart Parish. Don is a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart. They are both involved in “40 Days for Life” and Friday Adorations. Carole has been a member of the Sacred Heart Parish Choir for 25 years and a member of the Holy Name Society. Furthermore, when the Parish calls, the Robbins answer whenever they are able. Their children and grandchildren also answer the call whenever they can. Don is a constant presence at the Parish grounds, and a valuable asset to the whole Parish.

Don and his family have performed Community Service in the finest way. Don has been an assistant at the “Thursday Association for Retarded Citizens” summer camp. He has also been involved with both Special Olympics and the International Special Olympics. Don and Carole assist at Drexel House, a homeless shelter for men and women. Don is also an alumni of St. Martins University and is on their “Wall of Fame” for his contributions of service to the University. After a lifetime of service to community, church, council, and humanity in general, the Don and Carole Robbins family is eminently deserving of this month’s award of February 2013 Family of the Month for Council 1643!

TWO BABIES SAVED AS WE GO TO PRESS. YES, A MINIMUM OF TWO BABIES ARE ALIVE TODAY DUE TO THE GRACE OF GOD AND THOSE WHO ARE PARTICIPATING IN 40 DAYS FOR LIFE HERE IN OLYMPIA. HOW MANY TIMES DOES ONE GET A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SAVING OF A HUMAN LIFE! IF YOU ARE NOT NOW PARTICIPATING, PLEASE CALL TOM HRUSKA. PHONE: 561-5548 OR E-MAIL: [email protected]
