Thinkaboutthetoptwoorthreethingsmostpressingonyourheartandzoneinonthosewith

God.Writethesedowninthespaceprovidedbelow,andbeopentohearingwhatGodwantsto

showyouinthoseareas.Thebreakthroughs,miracles,andanswerstoyourprayerswillbeby‐

productsofdrawingclosertoJesus.

Whenpraying,makeyourprimarygoaltoknowJesusmoreandexperienceHim.Prayprayersof

totalsurrender,andaimtoglorifyGodwithyourlife.Focusfirstonwhat’srightaboutHim,suchas

hisgoodnessandHisgreatness,andseeeverythingelsethroughthatfilter.

Andmostsimply,maketimetopraydaily.Don’tovercomplicatethis!JusttalktoGod.Havethat

FASTING

ImportantNote:Fastingrequiresreasonableprecautions.Ifyouhaveanyhealthconcerns,pleaseconsultyourphysicianpriortobeginningyourfast,especiallyifyouaretakinganymedication,haveachroniccondition,orarepregnantornursingababy.

Asyoupreparetofast,itisimportanttochooseafastingplanthatworksforyou.Whilethissection

providessomegeneralinformationaboutdifferenttypesoffasts,aswellassomesuggestionson

howtocreateyourownfastingplan,itisimportanttomentionthatthereisnothingmore

inherentlyspiritualaboutonetypeoffastasopposedtoanother.Thesearesimplyguidelinesand

suggestionsondifferentthingsyoucando.

Donotletwhatyoueatordonoteatbecomethefocusofyourfast.Keepthemainthingthemain

thing,whichisdrawingclosertoGod.Remember,thisisatimetodisconnectenoughfromyour

regularpatternsandhabitsinordertoconnectmorecloselytoGod.Hereareafewtipstokeepin

mindbeforegettingstarted:

1.StartWhereYouAre

WeareallatdifferentplacesinourwalkwithGod.Likewiseourjobs,dailyschedules,andhealth

conditionsarealldifferentandplacevariouslevelsofdemandsonourenergy.Somostimportantly,

whetheryou’vefastedbeforeorthisisyourfirsttime,startwhereyouare.Yourpersonalfastshould

presentalevelofchallengetoit,butit’sveryimportanttoknowyourownbody,knowyouroptions

and,mostimportantly,seekGodinprayerandfollowwhattheHolySpiritleadsyoutodo.

Remember,thegoaloffastingisnotjusttodowithoutfood.ThegoalistodrawnearertoGod.

2.FindYourFastZone

Whenmostpeoplestartfasting,thereistypicallysomelevelofdiscomfort.However,itis

possibletogetusedtothefastingroutineprettyquickly.Quitesimply,youmustlearntofastina

waythatworksforyou.

Whileanytruefastdoesinvolveabstinencefromfoodoratleastcertaintypesoffood,typically,

differentfastingcombinationsworkbetterfordifferentpeople.Thegoaltohavingasuccessful

fastisallaboutfindingwhatweliketocallyourFastZone,andthatisdifferentforeverybody

andcanchangedependingontheseasonyouarein.

ThebestwaytodescribeyourFastZoneisthatit’stheplacewhereyoufeellightandspiritually

intune.YourmindiseasilyfocusedonGodandspiritualthings.Youhaveanincreasedspiritual

energy—youcanfeelthefastworking.Justlikerunnersknowwhattheirtargetheartrateisto

seethebenefitsoftheirphysicaltraining,theFastZoneissimilarinaspiritualsense.

FindingyourFastZonehelpsyouchooseboththetypeandlengthoffast.Let’ssayyouchoose

togoonaDanielfast(onlyfruitsandvegetables).Shouldyoueatbeans?Ifyoucaneatbeans

andstayinyourFastZone,goahead.Butforsomepeopleeatingbeanstakesthemoutofthe

zone.Shouldyoueatpeanutbutter?Probablynot.Peanutbutterismoreofanindulgence,and

notmanypeoplecanstayinaFastZonewhileenjoyingindulgences.

Shouldyoucompletelycutoutcaffeine?Itdepends.Thegreatthingis,whenyoufast,yourbody

automaticallycraveslesscaffeine.IfyoucanstayinyourFastZonewithalittlecaffeine,great.If

youaregoingonalongerfastandwanttocutitoutofyourdietcompletely,that’sgreattoo.

Buteaseyourselfoffandmakeityourgoaltobecompletelycaffeinefreeabouttwo‐thirdsof

thewayintoyourfast.

Ifyoudrinkcoffeeregularly,oneoftheworstmistakesyoucanmakeistofastforonetothreedays

andcutcaffeineoutabruptlyandcompletely.Pleasedon’tdothatoryouwillspendthistime

grumpyandinwithdrawalinsteadofenjoyingGod’spresence.

Mixingthingsupabitduringatwenty‐one‐dayfastiswhattypicallyworksbestforpeople.For

example,doafruitsandvegetablesfastforaweek.Thendoallliquidsforawhile.Maybeevenmix

inafewdaysofonlywaterifyouthinkyouarereadyforthat.Thengobacktofruitsandvegetables

forafewdays.

“Thereisn’toneapproachthatworksthesameforeveryone.

FollowtheHolySpirit,mixitup,findwhatworksforyou,andstayinyourFastZone!

Somepeoplecan’tstayinaFastZoneeatinganytypeofsolidfood,sotheypreferallliquids.With

today’sproteindrinksandjuicingmachines,itissoeasytogetahealthydoseofallyournutritional

needsevenwhiletakinginonlyliquids.Certainpeoplecan’tdoanythingotherthandrinkonly

water.Iftheyeatasaladordrinkaglassofjuice,theygetoutoftheirzone.Oriftheyallow

themselvestoeatcantaloupe,theywillendupeatingtwentycantaloupesaday!

3.ChooseYourTypeofFast

Whilepreparingforyourfast,itisimportanttochooseaheadoftimewhattypeoffast,orwhat

combination,youwillpursue.Notonlywillthishelpwithmakingthenecessarypreparationsto

implementyourplan,butasyoucommittoaspecificfastaheadoftimeandknowhowyou’re

goingtodoit,youwillpositionyourselftofinishstrong.

Onthefollowingpageswe’velistedsomeoptionsandvariationsoffastsyoucanchoosefrom.As

youreadovertheinformation,pleaseconsiderhowitmayormaynotapplytoyourpersonal

circumstancesandconvictions.

Youmaychoosetofastalltwenty‐onedays.Oryoumaychoosetofastseveraldaysoutofthetwenty‐

onedays,suchasthreeorfourdaysaweekthroughoutthetwenty‐one‐dayperiod.Maybeyouwilldo

thatanddothreetosevenconsecutivedaysattheend.Thisisyourpersonaldecisionandshouldbe

prayerfullyconsideredasitappliestoyourcircumstances.

DifferentTypesofFasts

SpecificFoodorActivityFast

Inthistypeoffastyouomitaspecificitem(s)fromyourmealplans.Forexample,youmaychoose

toeliminateallredmeat,processedorfastfood,orsweets.Mostpeoplecanincorporatethistype

offastrelativelyeasily.Itcanalsoprovetobeagreatsolutionforpeoplewithspecificdietary

needsormedicalconditionsthatmaycausecertainlimitations.

Whilefastingtypicallyreferstorefrainingfromspecificfooditems,youmayalsofinditextremely

beneficialtofastfromaregularactivityorhabit.Thismightincludethingssuchastelevision,

socialmedia,andthelike.

PrayerandfastingarenotjustaboutconnectingtoGodbutalsoaboutdisconnectingfromthe

world.Trytotuneoutsomeoftheregulardistractionsfromyourdayasmuchaspossible.

Replacethattimewiththingsthatwillnourishyouspiritually.

DanielFast

TheDanielfastisagreatmodeltofollowandonethatisextremelyeffectiveforspiritualfocus,

bodilydiscipline,andpurificationofthebodyandsoul.Itisprobablyoneofthemostcommonly

referred‐tofasts;however,withintheDanielfastthereisroomforbroadinterpretation.

InthebookofDanielwefindtwodifferenttimeswheretheprophetDanielfasted.Daniel

1statesthatheonlyatevegetablesandwater,andinDaniel10,whilethepassagedoes

notgiveaspecificlistoffoodsthatDanielate,itdoesstatethatheatenorich(orchoice)

foods,aswellasnomeatorwine.Sobasedonthesetwoverses,wecanseethateither

ofthese,orcombinationsofthetwo,constituteaDanielfast.

Again,itisimportanttomentionthatthereisnothinginherentlyspiritualaboutonetype

offastasopposedtoanother.ThefoundationoftheDanielfastisfruitsandvegetables.

Somestarchyvegetablesanddairycouldbeincluded,butthatdependsonthe

individual.YourgoalshouldbetoseekGodinprayeraboutthisandfollowwhattheHoly

Spiritleadsyoutodo.Justremember:findyourpersonalFastZone.

JuiceFast

Ajuicefastissimplyconsumingvegetableandfruitjuicesandwaterinsteadofsolid

food.Manypeopleincludewheyproteinintheirliquidplanaswell.Thisisoneofthe

mostpopularandeffectivefasts.Evenifyouchoosenottomakeyourentirefastliquids‐

only,substitutingoneortwomealsforliquidsisagreatalternative.

WaterFast

Awater‐onlyfastisthenormalfastreferredtointheBible.ThisishowJesusandthe

NewTestamentchurchfasted.Awaterfastisjustthat—noeatingofanyfoodordrinking

ofanyliquidsexceptwater.

Periodicwaterfastscanbeverybeneficial,butextremeprecautionsshouldbetaken.For

somepeopleitishardtoperformeffectivelyattheirjobsandhaveenergyfortheir

familieswhiledrinkingonlywater.

Werecommendconsultingyourphysicianfirst,andwaterfastingonlyforadayortwounless

youcangetawayoryourjoballowsyoutoreallydisconnectsoyoucangiveyourbest

energytothefast.Remember,whenJesuswentonHisforty‐dayfast,HewentbyHimself

outintothewilderness.

Havingsaidallthat,therearesomepeoplewhocanwaterfastandwork,andtheyfunction

finewithoutmuchfatigueandareabletoworkwell.Youareblessedifyouareoneofthese

people.

TotalFast

Atotalfastiswherenothing—neitherliquid,solidfood,norevenwater—isconsumedfora

veryshortperiodoftime.ThereareexamplesofthistypeoffastintheBible.ItwasanOld

Covenanttypeoffastassociatedwithmourning,ordeepgrief,suchaswhenDavidengaged

inatotalfastforaweek,hopingthatGodwouldsparethechildhehadwithBathsheba(2

Samuel12).

UndertheNewCovenant,wedonotfasttomournortoseekforgiveness.Godhasalready

forgivenus,andwearecommandedtocelebrateJesusbecauseHeisalive.Plus,complete

abstinenceoffoodandwatercanbeverydangeroustoourhealth.Attemptingtogowithout

waterforanyperiodoftimecanbeextremelyharmfultothebody.

Westronglydiscouragethetotalfast.

FastingWhileNursingorPregnant

Strictfastingwhilepregnantornursingalsoisnotrecommended.Ifyouareinthisincredibleseasonof

lifebutwouldliketoparticipateinthetwenty‐one‐dayplan,herearesomegreatoptionsforyouto

consider—withtheapprovalofyourphysician:

• amodifiedDanielfastincludingwholegrains,legumes,wheyprotein,calcium,andironsupplements• fastingsweetsanddesserts• fastingredmeat• fastingcertaindiversions(televisionshows,movies,socialmedia—suchasFacebook/Twitter,video

games,andsoon)Ifyouareapregnantornursingmother,yourpriorityisthehealthandthedevelopmentofthebaby

Godhasentrustedyouwith.Makethatyourguidelineandgofromthere.Andpleaseconsultyour

doctor.

FastingandEatingDisorders

Ifyouhavestruggledwithaneatingdisorder,thissituationisabattleofthemindyoucanwinthrough

Christ(Philippians4:13).Remember,fastingisatoolusedtogetclosertoGod,anditactuallyshould

keepusfrombeingpreoccupiedwithfood.Ifyourmethodoffastingisgoingtocauseyoutoobsess

aboutwhatyoueatinanyway,youwillneedtochangeeitheryourapproachoryourmindset.

Ifgivingupfoodisastumblingblocktoyou,thenconsiderfastingoftelevision,reading(otherthanthe

Bible,ofcourse),socialmedia,orshopping.Therearemanydistractionsandwaysthatweusetostayin

controlthatwecouldeliminatefromourdailyroutine.Wedothesethingstodistractourselvesfrom

therealissueshurtingus.Ifyoucanidentifysuchotherthings,maybeyoucangivethoseupinsteadof

food.

RememberthatyouarecoveredbyGod’sgrace.Godwillshowyouwhattodo.His“yokeiseasy”and

His“burdenislight”(Matt11:30).Hiswaywillbringresttoyoursoul.

4.BeginandBreaktheFastWell

Dependingonthetypeoffastyouchoose,itisveryimportanttoprepareyourbodyaheadoftime

beforebeginningthefast.Takeaweekorsototransitionintoyourfast;otherwise,youcouldgetsick.

Forexample,ifyouwouldliketogoonafruitsandvegetablesorjuicefast,starteliminatingmeat,

whitegrains,andrefinedsugarsfromyourdiettheweekbefore.Alsostarttocutbackquiteabiton

dairyproductsandsomeofyourcaffeineintake.

Thesameprincipleappliestobreakingyourfast.Whenyourfastisover,addfoodsbackinvery

gradually.Pleasedon’tbreakyourfastwithagreasycheeseburger!Becauseyourbodyissocleansed

anddetoxified,youwillmostlikelygetsickifyoudothat.

Therearealsoseveralsupplementsyoucantakethatwillhelpsupportthedetoxprocessduringyour

fast.Yourhealth‐foodstorecangiveyourecommendations.

5.CreatingYourPersonalFastingMenu

Onthefollowingpages,wewillshareafewsimplemenuoptionsforyouruse.Yourplancouldinclude

oneofthesemenuideasorevenavariationofallofthem.Youcouldevenmixitup,doingsomething

differentfood‐wiseontheweekendsoroncertaindaysoftheweek.Again,prayaboutthisandfind

whatworksforyou.

Tokeepyourenergyupthroughouttheday,it’simportanttoeatordrinkeverytwoandahalftothree

hours.Ifyougolongerthanthat,youcanexperienceanenergylullandbetemptedtooverstuff

yourselfatyournextmeal.Evenifyou’refastingonfruitsandvegetables,overstuffingisnevera

smartthingtodo.

Itisveryimportanttodrinklotsofwaterwhilefasting.Drinkingaboutonehundredouncesofwater

perdaywillhelptosupportyourcriticalliverfunction.

Theliveristhefilterforthebody,sowhenyoudon’tdrinkenoughwater,theliverdoesn’tfunctionat

itshighestcapacity.

Selectyourfooditemswisely.Wewillnotbelistingspecificingredientsyou“should”or“shouldnot”

includeinyourplan.Thekeyistoprepareaplanaheadofthefast,tonotgetlegalisticaboutit,andto

choosemenuitemswell.Forexample,ifyoupreferdressingonyoursalads,chooseahealthy,organic

optionwithnaturalingredients—anddon’tpouragallonofitonyourplate.Ifyou’redrinkingfruit

juices,trytogoasnaturalaspossible,anddon’tdrinkonesheavilyprocessedandladenwithsugar.

Remembertonotletfoodbecomethefocusofyourfast,butmakewiseeatingchoices.

6.FinalFastingTips

Herearesomeotherideasthatcanhelpmakeyourfastingexperiencemorepleasantandhelpful:

~ Asyouselectyourtypeoffast,makeafastingcalendarthatfitsyourplan.Determinewhateach

dayandweekwilllooklike.

~ Keepyourfridgeandpantrystockedwiththeitemsyouneed.Beingunpreparedtofastsetsyou

uptogiveintotemptation.Choosewellwhenselectingproducts,sticktorawfoodasmuchas

youcan,andlimitartificialingredients.

isnotaboutdutybutaboutrelationship.WhenweengageGodthroughreadingHisWord,weengage

theverypresenceofGod.HisWordislivingandactive!AswereadourBible,wearedrawingcloserto

GodandpositioningourselvestohearfromHiminparticularways.

Onceagain,aswithprayer,choosethetimeandtheplacewhereyouaregoingtoreadyourBibleand

devotionaleverysingleday,andcomepreparedtohearwhatHewantstotellyou.

Wewanttoencourageyoutobejustasintentionalaboutthenexttwenty‐onedays…andthetwenty‐one

daysafterthat…andsoon.Remember,keepingthefireandzealforGodburninginyourheartiswhatwill

keepyourrelationshipwithHimfreshandnew.ItwillallowyoutocontinueservingandobeyingHimfroma

positionofwantto,andyouwillexperiencethejoyofyoursalvationeveryday—regardlessofwhatlife

bringsyourway.

Theprinciplesyouhavepracticedinthesetwenty‐onedaysareveryeasytosustainlong‐term.Prayer,

fasting,andpersonaldevotionareallquitesimpletoincorporateintoyoureverydaylife.Overtheselast

twenty‐onedays,you’vecreatedspaceforGodtofill.Thebestwaytocontinueinthesesamepracticesisto

keepthatspaceopenindefinitely.Don’tallowittocloseup!ProtectthattimeandspacewithGodandmake
