Author

Patrick Mauriès is a writer, publisher and collector. He founded the publishing house Le Promeneur in 1981, and later, with the Italian publisher Franco Maria Ricci, helped to create the prestigious journal FMR. Author of previous monographs on Valentino, Christian Lacroix and other great couturiers, he is recognized as one of the most perceptive and knowledgeable writers on the world of fashion.

Coco Chanel’s passion for fabulous jewels, for exceptional stones, for

improbable marvels, produced pieces that were unparalleled in their

insistence on luxury and refinement. Drawing inspiration from tradition,

Chanel was never the slave of everyday formulas or mere market values.

Yet she reinvented tradition in the most arresting and modern jewelry pieces,

based on her love of colours, as well as her assured command of austere

classical beauty. Chanel was a creature of contrasts: there was the Chanel

of the most sumptuous baroque, of rococo mirrors and dazzling, playful,

unrestrained jewelry; and there was the Chanel of the utmost restraint,

of classicism à la française. Out of this dialogue between ostentation and

austerity, the jewelry that Chanel created throughout her long career has

been celebrated in many revivals of her exceptional taste. From the direct

re-creations of the 1932 Collection to the newest interpretations of comets

and stars, plumes and feathers, and Chanel’s signature flower, the camellia, this

book is true to the spirit of her enterprise. Classic images from the archives

combine with exciting new photography to bring old and new together.

Author

Olivier Dupon is the proprietor of his own boutique and writes a popular blog, Dossier37.tumblr.com. He is author of The New Artisans, also published by Thames & Hudson.

Jewelry has long been an accessory attributed with talismanic power and

significance. Its appeal remains wide, crossing all boundaries of culture, age,

body size and gender. In this beautiful new book, Olivier Dupon introduces

over 100 of the finest modern jewelers practising today. Featuring both

up-and-coming and established designers, the book is divided into nine

categories inspired not by traditional jewelry typology, but by style and look.

The book showcases fine jewelry, fashion jewelry, luxe jewelry, conceptual

jewelry, and much much more. Rough stones appear with exquisitely faceted

gems; organic forms vie with geometric structures; feathers and leather take

their place next to platinum and diamonds. Complete with short, informative

Sarah E. Braddock Clarke is a lecturer and the author of numerous books on advanced textiles, including Techno Textiles and Sports Tech, both published by Thames & Hudson. Jane Harris is a professor of Digital Imaging Design at Kingston University, Surrey.

This insightful and richly illustrated book examines the way in which the

rapid advances in computer technology have had an incalculable effect on

the fashions we wear. The revolutionary leaps forward that have occurred

in the fashion and textile industries have heralded a move away from the

tailor’s cutting-table to designs that are digitally printed at the touch of a

button. Drawing on the publishing success of Techno Textiles and Sports Tech

by the same author, Digital Visions for Fashion and Textiles presents twenty-

two of the most forward-thinking and technologically advanced creatives

in the fashion and textile sectors, bookended by two extensive essays that

examine the past and future of digital design in fashion and textiles.

Author

Mary Schoeser is Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Arts, London, and Honorary President of the UK Textile Society. Schoeser is currently organizing major forthcoming textile exhibitions for the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, and the Design Museum at the University of California Davis. Her previous books include World Textiles: A Concise History, Silk and Disentangling Textiles.

This major new work comprises more than 1,000 images that highlight the

beauty, subtlety, simplicity or complexity of textiles created around the

world. The juxtaposition of historical and contemporary examples highlights

the skill and imagination of textile designers throughout history, as well as

the remarkable range of achievements. Thematic illustrated sections present

in-depth knowledge and sweeping insights into the role textiles have played

throughout all human civilization, and illuminate the ways in which structure

or surface decoration or embellishment enhance this most tactile of arts.

With a definitive text by Mary Schoeser, drawing together knowledge

gathered over a liftime of immersion in the textile arts, no other book in

the vast literature on the subject has so comprehensively celebrated the

spectacular and enduring appeal of textiles.
